So in terms of safties, it's pretty muddled...
Pretty safe to assume Jackson and Demps are locks...possibly the starters.
Amos would be the other option but Jackson.
HJQ should make the roster and play ST.
Bush is in the same mold as HJQ, only one might make it. Other to PS?
Prosinski is a ST ace.
Hall if he moves to S(may not with the Jackson pick).
DHC pressure is on this year to show something. Could be a PS guy.
Ideally a couple of the returning young guys take a big step forward. Demps is likely only a 1 year fix.
Pace: Deiondre Hall, Kyle Fuller may move to safety

Currently my assumption is the starters are Amos at SS and Demps at FS. Backups at SS would be HJQ, Bush, Prosinski. Backups FS would be Jackson and Hall. I'd probably cut Prosinski, but he's a quality special teamer.ysleblanc wrote:So in terms of safties, it's pretty muddled...

If the Bears are really aiming past this year to 2018. they don't need ST aces like Prosinski and McManis. They need the roster spots, and they need to be developing new ST aces from of the 1st and 2nd year players who aren't necessarily forecast as future starters.

Bush
Amos
Jackson
DHC
Prosinski
Corners:
Amukamara

Fuller
Callahan
McManis

Banks
Where does Hall go? Doesn't seem like there's a ton of space at either spot...

It will be easier than it looks once the injuries start. I'm even betting that Glenn or Bausby make it back to the roster at some point in the year.G08 wrote:Where does Hall go? Doesn't seem like there's a ton of space at either spot...

I think Hall stays at corner. With the positional groups he falls into the CB depth better then Safely. Plus he did show well there before his injury. HJQ I think makes it over Bush. Both have their issues but HJQ has aggression. DHC I hope improves this summer, he has a skill set to be a SP stud, solid back up at every spot.

I could see banks or webb beating out Fuller. I do think Fuller will be given every chance theoretically though.
HJQ may beat out Bush. I seem to recall Donetell loved HJQ. Plus didn't exactly show anything last year.

yeah i really dont think at this point they can afford to jettison a young cb who hasnt hit his ceiling yet, vs a cb who's great on special teams but you clench your asshole when he's in on defense.wab wrote:You don't think Callahan makes it?G08 wrote:I think it ends up:G08 wrote:So our safeties currently:

kyle long did recently mention on twitter that mcmanis is a pro's pro who prepares tirelessly or something like that, and i know our coaches love that. but still!

Personally I'd get rid of Bush, I think he's a bum. McManis is just a ST guy but Fox loves him.
Locks for Safety:
Demps
Jackson
Amos
Bubble:
Bush / DHC (it's possible only one of them makes it)
Locks for Corner:
Amukamara
Cooper
Hall
Bubble:
LeBlanc / Callahan (I worry only one makes it)
Fuller (just because he's in the house of dog)
McManis (only value really is ST)

Didn't they trade up for Bush? I can't see him being cut after one season.

I don't think they'd cut him after one season, but I would based on that list. I thought he fucking sucked last year.wab wrote:Didn't they trade up for Bush? I can't see him being cut after one season.

Well. HJQ was benched for Bush.mmmc_35 wrote:Why they drafted, signed, moved Amos, and potential Hall, because Bush sucked.
I get it, no one wanted Bush and HJQ is a scrappy undrafted free agent from BFE State and everyone loves underdogs. But HJQ was the worst player in the Bears secondary last season at times.

I'm dot defending Bush because he hasn't been very good, but he was a healthy scratch for a good bit of the season because he wasn't healthy and didn't know the defense. He played the last 4-5 games in place of HJQ and finished the season as the starter at SS.
They also cut Rolle and handed Bush his job. He has talent. He's better than HJQ, he just needs time to develop. I wouldn't cut him, but I'm not the GM. Still, draft picks almost always get 2-3 seasons to prove they don't stink. UDFAs generally don't.

Bush started the last few games from what I recall... he was the culprit on that busted Cover 6 against Rodgers/Nelson.

If there was ANYONE who needed replaced this offseason, it was HJQ. He was just terrible.

I think the McManis and Prosinski roster spots will be theirs until it gets to a point where there is a young player(S or C) that is too good to pass waivers/risk losing. Right now there are a lot of 1st/2nd year guys that showed flashes but are still fringe NFLers. Some of those guys will have to step up this off season/preseason.

I'd agree that when you're rebuilding, you develop position players, not STers.
You can add ST aces later, when you're getting ready to contend.

Had to look it up as all of our memories are foggy from the Bears hell we endure. Yes Bush started week 11-16. Bush sat out week 17 with an ankle injury. Amos didn't start week 13-14 I believe with an injury. HJQ started with Bush those games, and week 17. So I miss remembered.wab wrote:HJQ started the first 12 games and was benched for Bush.mmmc_35 wrote:I don't think that's right. I think HJQ finished the season . Double threat: The Bears plan to give second-year defensive back Deiondre' Hall reps at both cornerback and safety during their offseason practices.
After playing both positions at Northern Iowa, the 2016 fourth-round draft pick lined up exclusively at cornerback last year as a rookie, compiling seven tackles and one interception while being limited to eight games by an ankle injury.
"He's going to do both," Fangio said. "We're going to float him back and forth. He's had some experience there in college. When it comes to picking your team, and you're going to pick nine or 10 DBs to make your team, if somebody's got versatility and can play multiple spots, that helps. So we're going to see if he's one of those guys."
