I thought this would be an interesting revisionist history type thread to debate. What I’ve done here is redraft the SAME POSITIONS, taking the best players left at each position, as you’ll see. I put quite a bit of time into this during downtimes at work (took me about a month to go back through every draft). Here is 1980-99. I'll post 2000-2015 in another thread soon (split it up because that would be a crazy long read). Let the debates begin…

1980 DRAFT
1-19-LB- Otis Wilson
2-46-RB- Matt Suhey
4-103-G- Arland Thompson
5-130-C- Paul Tabor
6-156-DB- Mike Guess
7-183-WR- Emanuel Tolbert
8-215-C- Randy Clark
9-242-QB- Turk Schonert
10-269-DB- Willie Stephens
11-296-DB- Chris Judge
12-323- TE- Bob Fisher

FINAL GRADE: C-

This BARELY breaks a C because of the first 2 picks. Everything after was horrible. Probably why Neil Armstrong lasted in the Apollo program longer than he did with the Bears.

1980 RE DRAFT

1-LB- Otis Wilson (yeah Matt Millen played longer but Wilson was better)
2-RB- Matt Suhey
4-G- Keith Bishop
5-C- Randy Clark (moves up 3 rds)
6-DB- Wayne Smith
7-WR- Gerald Carter
8-C- Guy Bingham
9-QB- Turk Schonert
10-DB- Kenny Hill
11-DB- Chris Judge
12-TE- Bob Fisher

Bishop, Smith, Carter, and Hill are all good upgrades.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1981 DRAFT
1-11- Keith Van Horne-T
2-38- Mike Singletary-LB
3-67- Ken Margerum-WR
4-95- Todd Bell- DB
6-150-Reuben Henderson-DB
7-177-Jeff Fisher-DB
8-205-Scott Zettek-DT
9-232-Frank Ditta-G
10-260-Tim Clifford-QB
11-287-Lonnie Johnson-RB
12-316-Bob Shupryt-LB

FINAL GRADE: B-
A 1st ballot HOFer. Van Horne anchored the right side of the o-line for a decade. Bell was one of the best until he sat out the ’85 season over money. Fisher is lousy coach, but was apparently one of the toughest men to ever walk into the Bears locker room.

1981 RE DRAFT
1-T-Keith Van Horne (one might argue Tim Irwin from the Viqueens because he played longer, but Van Horne was better I think)
2-LB-Mike Singletary
3-WR- Charlie Brown
4-DB- Todd Bell
6-DB- William Judson
7-DB- Willis Tullis
8-DT- Daryl Grant*
9-G- Chuck Commiskey
10-QB- Bob Gagliano
11-RB- Chester Willis
12-LB- Bob Shupryt

FINAL GRADE: B+
Brown and Grant give this a nice bump up…especially Grant who starred on the Redskins D-line. Gagliano, Judson, and Tullis are upgrades.

1982 DRAFT (Ditka’s 1st)
1-5-QB- Jim McMahon
3-62-TE- Tim Wrightman
4-89-WR- Dennis Gentry
5-G- Perry Hartnett
5-DB- Dennis Tabron
6-G-Kurt Becker
7-DE- Henry Waechter
9-DB- Mike Hatchett
10-DB- Joe Turner
11-LB- Guy Boliaux
12-LB- Ricky Young

FINAL GRADE: C+
McMahon is the headliner here. Gentry was a nice weapon for a decade and would’ve been WAY better on a team that used him right. Becker was a top reserve for the Bears for a few years. That’s about it.

1982 RE DRAFT
1-QB- Jim McMahon
3-TE- Steve Jordan (man did we blow this pick…TE’s after Wrightman included Holman, Pat beach, and Metzalaars).
4-WR- Dennis Gentry
5-G- Rich Baldinger
5-DB- Ken Coffey
6-G- Kurt Becker
7-DE- Sam Clancy*
8-C- Jerry Doerger
9-DB- Dana Mclemore
10-DB- Andre Young
11-LB- Scott Nicolas
12-LB- Dave Levenick

FINAL GRADE: B
Jordan, Baldinger, and Clancy are major upgrades.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1983 DRAFT
1 Jim Covert, T - Pittsburgh
1 Willie Gault, WR - Tennessee
2 Mike Richardson, DB - Arizona State
3 Dave Duerson, DB - Notre Dame
4 Tom Thayer, G - Notre Dame
4 Pat Dunsmore, TE - Drake
8 Richard Dent, DE - Tennessee State
8 Mark Bortz, G - Iowa
9 Rob Fada, G - Pittsburgh
9 Mark Zavagnin -- Notre Dame
Anthony Hutchison anthonyhutchison/ HUT332232
RB - Texas Tech
Gary Worthy garyworthy/ WOR715551
Wilmington
Oliver Williams oliverwilliams/ WIL458802
FINAL GRADE: A
7 starters came out of this epic class..one of the best in Bears history. Covert and Dent were arguably the best at their positions for several years.
1983 RE DRAFT
1-T- Jim Covert
1-WR- Henry Ellard
2-DB- Albert Lewis
3-DB- Dave Duerson
4-G- Tom Thayer
4-TE- Mike Mularkey
8-DE- Ricahrd Dent*
8-G- Mark Bortz*
9-G- Dan Fike
9- LB- Karl Mecklenburg
10-RB-Tim Spencer
11-RB- Boyce Green
12-WR-Anthony Carter (WOW!)
FINAL GRADE: A++
The original class was so good that Covert, Duerson, Thayer, Dent, and Bortz STILL make the cut. But then add Ellard, Lewis, Mecklenberg, and Carter??? Maybe the best draft ever.
1984 DRAFT:
Wilber Marshall wilbermarshall/ MAR475633
Ron Rivera ronrivera/ RIV276861
Stefan Humphries stefanhumphries/ HUM789051
Tom Andrews tomandrews/ AND729288
Louisville
Nakita Robertson nakitarobertson/ ROB359427
Central Arkansas
Brad Anderson bradanderson/ AND101290
Mark Casale markcasale/ CAS006291

Kurt Vestman kurtvestman/ VES601829
Idaho
Shaun Gayle shaungayle/ GAY664464
Mark Butkus markbutkus/ BUT095168
Donald Jordan donaldjordan/ JOR180560
To get Marshall and Gayle was clutch. But Rivera was the only other contributor and he was never more than serviceable.
1984 RE DRAFT
1- Wilber Marshall
2- Gary Reasons
3-Guy McIntyre
4-Ron heller
7-Earnest Byner
8-Micahel Harper
9- Blair Kiel
10-Bobby Micho
10- Shaun Gayle*
11- Mark Butkus
12- Donald Jordan
Reasons was a regular contributor on the Giants more so than Rivera was for Chicago that’s for sure. McIntyre is interesting, because if he’s a Bear, The Fridge Phenomenon almost certainly never happens in ’85. Heller and Byner are solid NFL players for a decade.
1985 DRAFT
William Perry williamperry/ PER762750
Reggie Phillips reggiephillips/ PHI606955
James Maness jamesmaness/ MAN175692
Kevin Butler kevinbutler/ BUT441235

Georgia
Charles Bennett charlesbennett/ BEN290696
Steve Buxton stevebuxton/ BUX634187
Indiana State
Thomas Sanders thomassanders/ SAN494788
Pat Coryatt patcoryatt/ COR795975
Jim Morrissey jimmorrissey/ MOR678000
Perry, Butler, and Morriseey became long time contributors, and Phillips was ok for a couple years. Sanders made some nice runs too behind Payton and Anderson.
1985 RE DRAFT
1- William Perry-DT
2- Mark Kelso-CB
3- Andre Reed-WR (ugh!)
4- Kevin Butler-K
7- Milford Hodge-DE
8- Dan Remsberg-T
9- Thomas Sanders-RB*
10- Dean Hamel- DT
11- Jim Morrissey-LB*
Anytime you add a HOF player in Reed, you’re in the B range. Kelso was another long time Buffalo Bill.
1986 DRAFT
Neal Anderson nealanderson/ AND131677
Vestee Jackson vesteejackson/ JAC613904
David Williams davidwilliams/ WIL213246
Illinois
Paul Blair paulblair/ BLA536393
Lew Barnes lewbarnes/ BAR341090

Jeff Powell jeffpowell/ POW276857

Maurice Douglass mauricedouglass/ DOU692140
John Teltschik johnteltschik/ TEL415291
Barton Hundley bartonhundley/ HUN003894
Kansas State
Glen Kozlowski glenkozlowski/ KOZ474616
Anderson was one of the best for about 4 years. Vestee and Douglass made some nice contributions and Kozlowski was a fixture on special teams for several years. But other than that, pretty weak draft.
1986 RE DRAFT
1- RB- Neal Anderson
2- DB- Tim McKyer
3- WR-Bill Brooks
4- T- Robert Jenkins
5- WR- Mark Jackson
6- RB- Vai Sikahema
7- DB- Michael Zordich
8- Maurice Douglass*
9- John Teltschik
10- John Armstrong
11- Glen Kozlowski *
Bears would’ve filled A LOT of positions in this draft. 2 future starters at WR in Brooks and Jackson make the transition from Gault and McKinnon seamless. McKyer was a lockdown Pro Bowl corner for several years. Sikehema and Dennis Gentry make a formidable return duo. Zordich, long time safety.
1987 DRAFT
Jim Harbaugh jimharbaugh/ HAR004303
Ron Morris ronmorris/ MOR533925
Southern Methodist
Sean Smith seansmith/ SMI709920
Grambling State
Steve Bryan stevebryan/ BRY113259

Dick Chapura dickchapura/ CHA546966
Missouri
Tim Jessie timjessie/ JES498348
Eric Jeffries ericjeffries/ JEF726754
Harbaugh and Morris were it. And Morris was basically a jobber.
1987 RE DRAFT
1- QB- Rich Gannon ( I almost went with Don Majkowski based on Gannon being such a late bloomer and Majkowski’s injury that derailed what might have been a BIG TIME career…but perhaps Gannons late career dominance would’ve been worth the wait?)
2- WR- Mark Carrier
4- DE- Fred Stokes
5- DE- Leon Seals
5-LB- Greg Lloyd
6-C- Frank Winters
7- T- Howard Ballard
8- LB- Scott Leach
9- RB- Merril Hoge
10- DT- Dick Chapura
11- RB- Tim Jessie
12- DB- Tyrone Braxton*
Another draft full of future starters! Only reason it doesn’t get a B+ is because of how long it took Gannon to become a good qb. But longtime starters drafted here in Carrier, Stokes, Seals, Lloyd, Winters, Ballard, and Braxton. Hoge was good player for a few years too.
1988 DRAFT:
Brad Muster bradmuster/ MUS711924
Wendell Davis wendelldavis/ DAV793092
Dante Jones dantejones/ JON199320
Ralph Jarvis ralphjarvis/ JAR726754
Jim Thornton jimthornton/ THO781998

Troy Johnson troyjohnson/ JOH699408

David Tate davidtate/ TAT151014
Harvey Reed harveyreed/ REE207644
Howard
Rogie Magee rogiemagee/ MAG262314
Joel Porter joelporter/ POR132507
Steve Forch steveforch/ FOR020618
Greg Clark gregclark/ CLA318681
Not the worst draft ever. Muster, Davis, Jones, and Stinson were decent starters for a few years. Tate a decent reserve.
1988 RE DRAFT
1- RB- Craig Heyward
1- WR- Brian Blades
2- LB- Bill Romanowski
3- DE- Jeff Cross
4- TE- Brian Kinchen
5-LB- Carlton Bailey*
6- DB- Martin Mayhew*
7- T- John Jackson*
8- DB- Dwayne Harper*
8- RB- Marvin Allen
9- WR- Frank Pillow
10- G- Joel Porter
11- Victor Jones*
LB- Greg Clark
Another SOLID B+ draft. I always loved the big bruiser from Pitt in Heyward. Sad the one year he played for the Bears in ’93, Wanny didn’t care that he was the size of The Fridge. Him and Neal would’ve been a sweeter backfield in the late 80s than they were in ’93 when Neal was on his last legs and Heyward was living at Ponderosa. Crazy Romanowski would’ve been adored in Chicago and with he and Bailey flanking Samurai, they would have made us forget about Marshall and Wilson FAST. Blades, Cross, Kinchen, Mayhew, Jackson, and Harper all had pretty good careers.

Woolford and Armstrong were top notch defenders in the league for quite a few years. Fontnenot became a fixture at center. Probably a higher grade if not for all the whiffs……and if you take it for a 7rd draft.
1989 RE DRAFT
1- DB- Donnell Woolford
1- DE- Trace Armstrong
2- LB- Jerrol Williams
2- G- Mark Schlereth (makes me sick, but yes)
3- C- Jerry Fontenot
4- DB- Darren Carrington
5- RB- Dave Meggett (Butts)
5-LB- David Griggs *
7- DB- J.B. Brown *
7- QB- Brent Snyder

10-WR- Scott Ankrom
11- DT- Tony Bowick
11-DB- R.J. Kors
12- WR- Freddy Weygand
12- G- Carlton Haselrig*
With so many picks, Bears able to land A LOT OF future starters. Stink, Meggett, Griggs, Brown, Fenner, Johnson, and Haselrig are all pretty good pickups. Williams and Carrington weren’t bad either.

Carrier, Cox, and Mangum are the only ones who became regular contributors. Washington died tragically before his career ever really got started, Tim Ryan was nothing more than depth, and Willis and Bailey were mostly backups, though bailey was a decent return man for a few years.
1990 RE DRAFT
1- DB- LeRoy Butler (kills me to pick a Puker over Carrier, but this became the reality of the rivalry in the 90's.)
2- DT- Jimmie Jones
2- LB- Bryce Paup (Packers players trending)
3- DE- Rob Burnett
3- QB- Neil O'Donnell
4- WR- Terrance Mathis*

9- RB- David Lang
10- DE- Martin Harrison
11- DE- Darrel Davis
11-T- Roman Matusz
12-DB-Anthony Cooney
8 future regular starters. Some were mainstays others just average, but that's a great number. A good draft to set the Bears up for the 90s! Allen, Fortin, and Mathis were steals!

John Cook johncook/ COO164177
Zorich and Gardocki were the only legit picks. Stan Thomas was a COLLOSAL bust, and if you ever watch the Bears-steelers 92 youtube video (samurai's last home game), you'll see a hilarious confrontation between Ditka and Thomas (pretty sure he is screaming “F*CK YOU” right in Ditka's face) on the sideline and why Thomas probably hated football, Ditka, the Bears, and his entire life. Morgan flamed out of the league fast, after early flashes. As did Lewis, who minus a little cocaine habit, probably would have been a VERY good nfl rb.
1991 RE DRAFT
1- T- Erik Williams (that just makes ya sick)
2- DT- Ted Washington
3- P- CHRIS GARDOCKI
4- DB- Merton Hanks*
5- WR- Keenan McCardell*

9-LB- Jeff Brady*
10-DE- Mike Flores
11-G- Jeff Pahukoa
12- DT- Tim Edwards
'
Williams, Washington, Hanks, and McCardell MAKE the class. Gary Brown had a decent stretch at RB.

Spellman showed early flashes but morphed into a nutbag. Auzenne was serviceable. Lincoln had a decent stretch. Everyone else blew.
1992 RE DRAFT
1- DE- Robert Porcher (Lions)
2- T- Daryl Ashmore
3- DB- Willie Clay
4- QB- Jeff Blake* (numbers wise you could make the case for Brad Johnson, but anybody who saw them play knows Blake was the superior passer)
5- TE- Mark Chumura* (Packers)
6- DB- Darren Perry *
7- WR- Chris Walsh (longtime Viqueen)
9- G- Jerry Ostroski*
10-RB- Charles Evans
11-T- Louis Age
12- Eric Shaw
Porcher, Ashmore, Blake, Chumura, Perry, and Ostroski stand out. Not great picks, but good.

Waanny's first draft was probably his best. Conway, Simpson, Perry, Baker, and Fontenot all went on to have decent NFL careers. Gedney was slowed by injuries.
1993 RE DRAFT
1- WR- Curtis Conway
2- DT- John Parrella
3- TE- Frank Wycheck*
4- G- Chris Gray
4- LB- Jessie Armstead*
4- DE- Michael McCrary*
6- LB- Greg Biekert*

The beginning of the end for Wanny. Only Sauerbrun had a decent carerr and that wasn't in Chicago. Salaam wasted his talents. Riley was the ORIGINAL Dan Bazuin. Did he ever play a down? Jack Jackson was the size of Beetlejuice.

1996 RE DRAFT
1- DB- Walt Harris (surprisingly enough, he probably had the best career of the all the CB's in this draft, just didn't hit his stride until later in his career)

4- DT- La Roi Glover*

6- LB- Artie Ulmer
6- DB- Omar Stoutmire
7- DT- Jason Ferguson *
7- DE- Marvin Thomas
FINAL GRADE: C-
Not a drastic improvement. Only Harris really jumps out.

Moses Moreno mosesmoreno/ MOR121071
FINAL GRADE: B-
Kreutz and Mannelly were their best at their positions for quite a few years. Parrish was damn good too early on. Curtis P. Enis is the black eye on a decent class.
1998 RE DRAFT
1- RB- Fred Taylor
2- DB- Tony Parrish
3- C- Olin Kreutz
4- TE- Roland Williams
6- LB- Chris Draft*
6- LS/T- Patrick Mannelly
7- T- Chad Overhauser

Adding Taylor and Williams bump this up slightly.

1999 DRAFT
1 Cade McNown, QB - UCLA
2 Russell Davis, DE - North Carolina
2 Rex Tucker, T
2 D'Wayne Bates, WR - Northwestern
3 Marty Booker, WR - Louisiana-Monroe

FINAL GRADE: B
While the draft started horribly, it was saved with Booker, Holdman, Colvin, Azumah, and Tucker.

1999 RE DRAFT
1- QB- Aaron Brooks (sad huh? Though Aaron Brooks career numbers might shock you. But alas, it looks like we REALLY should've traded up to get McFlabb or Culpepper)
2- DT- Roderick Coleman
3- G- Edwin Mulitalo*
3- WR- Donald Driver* (Packer)
3- WR- Marty Booker
4- LB- Roosevelt Colvin
4- LB- Eric Barton*
5- T- Mike Rosenthal
5- LB- Jay Foreman
5- DB- Jerry Azumah
6- DB- JoJuan Armour
7- WR- Sean Morey* (longtime ST ace)
7- FB- Jim Finn*

FINAL GRADE: B+
Brooks while, remembred by few had a much better career than McNown. Coleman, Mulitalo, barton, and Finn are nice upgrades.

This is the first time that TL:DR applies to me.
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

Noted Brain Genius Malk, Summer 2018.

(2020 update, wait, was I right...)

Yeah... I don't buy that you actually looked into who to redraft in the 11th and 12th rounds of the 1980's drafts. lol

Of course I did...otherwise you wouldn't see any changes in those rounds. All changes in each round are players available AFTER the original player the Bears selected.

I'm going to go through and format your post so that it's more legible. Good work, though!

Actually on second thought it would take about 2 hours to format this. I'll leave that to you.

Just don't copy-paste from websites like that. As it is it's nearly impossible to sort through.

If I have time today I'll try to do more format correction on it.

Yeah, there's no way that there would exist a website in 2018 that would do that sort of thing.

It's perfectly reasonable to believe you researched the likes of say -- Dave LeVenick... and decided he'd be a nice 12th round redraft in 1982.

What I did with late round guys was take my best educated guess.... OBVIOUSLY.

If you have better info on those late round guys, by all means, make your list and quit trolling.
