QB Prospect Discussion: Brad Kaaya, Miami

I feel like if Deshaun Watson threw the second ball, you'd say that it was an awful throw and should have been picked off

I just don't see anything special with him. I think he'll be a fine system guy, solid backup that can come in and start some games for you. He's a statue in the pocket and can't make any plays off script -- two traits I really don't like in a QB.

He put that ball where no one else had any shot of even touching it. And although he's a statue in the pocket, CFB film room did an analysis of him last season and concluded that his in the pocket mobility was elite based on his sack percentage under pressure and the fact that he doesn't scramble outside of the pocket.

I'm not sure that being a "statue" QB is a bad thing. We just witnessed what a "statue" QB can do in the super bowl. Kaaya can work with in a pocket no problem.

You might be onto something with him not being able to work off script. He does seem to get flustered when he runs out of options.

Main point being, you move him off his spot at the end of his drop and you can take it to the bank that the play is dead the vast majority of the time.

Brady, Marino, Manning all aren't/weren't athletic, but they could manipulate the pocket and always kept a stable base and had the arms that didn't always require perfect footwork. Kaaya's arm is weak to the point where if he doesn't have a clean drop, in rhythm, he's going to be in a lot of trouble. I hate that in a QB.

I have to agree with you on this one. I think him getting into an NFL program would fix a lot of this problem. I don't have anything to back this up but it seems like he is just soft and has some growing up to do. I still believe he could be the best value QB in this draft and would fit what the bears are trying to accomplish offensively.

According to Ian Wharton (nflfilmstudy on twitter), who charted all QBs throws this season, Kaaya was easily the worst versus pressure.

Kaaya vs pressure - 9/37, 2 TDs, 1 INT

That said Watson was pretty bad vs pressure as well. Although he is much better on 3rd/4th down throws

Yes, Kaaya was bad under pressure this season. But based on the fact that he was good under pressure last season, there are other factors at play. Mainly that Kaaya lost all trust in his offensive line.

I like stats as an adjunct to what I see on tape, just like I like combine metrics as a numerical value on what I see as well.

I like Kayaa as a groomable project if a vet bridge QB is brought in. IMO, Romo would be a perfect mentor for this kid. Man it really sucks that the bears have the #3 pick in this draft when no QB is really screaming they deserve that high of a selection.

Seriously. Can everyone just stop with the Romo stuff? He's older and more expensive than Cutler. Oh and he's only thrown like 12 passes in two years.

What does Romo's age vs Cutler's have to do with anything? It's not like the bears are moving on from Cutler because of his age. I would also disagree he will be more expensive. He's made plenty of money and wants to prove he can still play. I can see him signing a very cap friendly contract. How many 35 plus year old QB's just had a good season?, 5ish? I'm not saying he's the future but he could be a good bridge until a QB like Kaaya is ready.

Now you have a point with the 12 passes in two years.....

I agree. Kayaa does get flustered when pressured. He still has a high up side and would do well in Loggains system. I wouldn't be mad if Kaaya or Mahomes were selected in the 3rd.

Don't need to, watched all his games. He was actually really good under pressure in 2015. He lost all trust in his offensive line in 2016.

You realize how skittish he is in the pocket, right? I'm talking he found a way to incorporate "tuck and cover" into his throwing motion when he feels pressure/is about to get hit.
