There's a solid argument for him from a leadership, football intelligence standpoint. He's got a good enough arm, he's athletic, he can extend and make plays with his feet. There is a lot to work with... the BIG question on him is if he can translate to an NFL system, which really is impossible for any of us to know.ysleblanc wrote:From what I have heard from the experts, this is the guy who has what it takes to be a top 5 pick and day 1 NFL starter. Everybody else is a late 1st or early 2nd round prospect.
I'd like to throw him to the wolves because I think he's the type of kid that it would speed up his development, rather than others that would fold and start trending toward shell-shock.

Watson is gonna do it all at the combine.

I totally agree with him not participating in the Senior Bowl but, given this is the season for overthinking, does this hit his draft stock? Top prospects skip things because they can, this makes me feel a little bit that he can't.
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

Watson has a lot to prove to the people that think he's not a top prospect, even though he's being told he won't make it out of the top 5.
He's the Browns top rated QB's (according to articles) and if he does well at the combine, the Bears might not get a chance at him.

I've read that GMs and scouts know that the QB isn't familiar with throwing to these WRs at the combine, but what they want to see is a QB who isn't afraid of the challenge. I think Watson saying that he will do everything will just add to the lure that follows this kid around.malk wrote:I totally agree with him not participating in the Senior Bowl but, given this is the season for overthinking, does this hit his draft stock? I keep hearing Pace's comments "a player who elevates his program". Clemson hadn't beaten South Carolina in 5-6 years, and this kid plays on a torn ACL to ensure that they win. They haven't (hadn't) won a National Title since 1981 and he proceeds to end that drought as well.
I get the Tebow arguments (awfully lazy IMO), but this kid does a hell of a lot more in throwing the football. Can he become a true pocket passer? I don't know, he tends to bail pretty early when his first read isn't there, but how much of that is on the offense, too? I would expect an adjustment period, but really this offense should be tailored to what Watson does well. Let him throw on the move, sprinkle in some zone-read concepts for him, some run-pass options, and see where this thing goes.

I don't get the Tebow comp at all. Tebow looked like he was throwing from a rocking chair.

If Tebow would have been fine with switching to TE, like they suggested at the combine, he may have gone in the 4th round but he'd probably still be in the NFL catching TDs.G08 wrote:I don't get it either, honestly.wab wrote:I don't get the Tebow comp at all. Where did the Tebow comparison even start? I may not be the biggest fan of Watson, but he does have an NFL throwing motion, something Tebow never had and there was no way that was going to change. Tebow threw like Byron Leftwich threw, almost like a clock cycling a day.wab wrote:If Tebow would have been fine with switching to TE, like they suggested at the combine, he may have gone in the 4th round but he'd probably still be in the NFL catching TDs.G08 wrote:I don't get it either, honestly.wab wrote:I don't get the Tebow comp at all. Byron Leftwich's release was immediate compared to Tebow.

His release was immediate but the motion normally started at about 4 on the dialwab wrote:Byron Leftwich's release was immediate compared to Tebow.

the only lazy comparisons to tebow i've seen dont have anything to do with throwing motion? they're more about the whole "he's a winner, he elevates those around him" mythology surrounding tebow.

Hey guys - so I wasn't there today but my buddy went down to the field and was able to see Watson do a workout with Jordan Palmer and Norv Turner. Wish I was there today to see him in action but I couldn't. I do have a couple of very short videos to share, check below.
Also, my friend mentioned that he thought Watson seemed to have an aura about him and more of a presence to him than Trubisky. Said he was very calm, cool and collected. Good throwing mechanics and good drops. He liked Watson a little more than Trubisky today because he seemed like he would know how to handle pressure and was very attentive to what the coaches were telling him. You could see him practicing all the details and fine tuning what they told him.
It was just one workout and Watson's workout was definitely different than Trubisky's so it's not a true comparison - we're talking about one workout in shorts with no pads on and no 260 pound OLB breathing down his neck.
Oh and he also said that Watson seemed like he was legit 6'3. He was standing next to Palmer who is 6'5 and wasn't that much shorter than him. That's all I got fellas - I know it's not that much and it's probably nothing you already didn't know - but nonetheless, it was a great opportunity that most of us don't get to experience - so I was happy to share it with all of you!

Thanks man! Looks like he's been working on his drops a little bit, looks cleaner.
A legit 6'3" wouldn't surprise me, really all I want his him to be at or above 6022 (hell even Rodgers is 6020)

I know its two 11 second videos. I am not a QB guru. However do his throwing mechanics look a lot different? Some better some not. His arm slot looked different there, and his back foot stayed closer to the earth. There is something about his throwing motion I don't like.

Needs to be cleaned up. I love the way Rodgers/Carr throw the ball. Brady too but... fuck that guy.

This has been my torture... so I've been hanging onto the fact that QBs mechanics often times improve once they enter the NFL (see: Carr, Derek and Rodgers, Erin).

What's really irritating me is that as much as I like both these guys, I feel like the best in-between of both of them is Mahomes, and he's like a poor fusion of them that still has a lot of upside.G08 wrote:This guy gets it.UOK wrote:I wish Watson and Trubisky could be fused into one guy. I see Trubisky as Joey Harrington. Guy who needs time to develop but could be good if you successfully build around him, but won't lift your franchise up alone.
I see Watson as Matt Leinart. Decorated career guy who has all the qualities, but could plateau quickly in his career. A guy who could get you to an 8-8 season and make you excited, but then within a couple years you realize that's all he's ever going to be.
Mahomes looks like, and don't take this the wrong way, but he looks like a beggar's combination of Brett Favre, Steve Young, and Doug Flutie. I think his arm is great, he's mobile as hell, and just has that big play knack. It might not translate to the NFL, but the guy's a baller.
I don't know if it's stupid Aggie football bullshit that's gotten him this far like Johnny before him, but the guy has, by all accounts, that kind of talent that if you can harness the careless parts of his game and unleash him as a weapon, you'll go places.
Watson is the safest play with the lowest upside and best immediate return. Trubisky is an investment that could turn into Drew Brees or Blaine Gabbert. Mahomes is the highest upside and the biggest gamble.

I think Watson has the biggest shot to be this year's Dak Prescott if he comes to the right situation. I think he's a legit 6'2 or 6'3" guy and if he's hitting the weights hard he should weigh in around 218 I would think. He's my pick because there is just something to him (I hate the term "he's a winner" but this kid just doesn't fold when the game is on the line), the biggest question mark is can he learn an NFL system, can he learn to stay in the pocket, and can he refine his mechanics to work on getting the ball out even quicker?
I think Trubisky has a lot of Alex Smith/Tony Romo to his game and I think he might need some time in the same system before things really start to click. I see a game manager in him and athletic traits(Smith) with the potential to hit the intermediate-to-deep play from time to time (Romo).
Mahomes is Brett Favre/Johnny Manziel to me... a big armed, almost recklessly confident gun slinger that has the potential to be the best QB in this class. He also has the potential to flame out very quickly if he isn't given time to learn the NFL game.

Mahomes was a Red Raider, not an Aggie and Mahomes never had anyone like Mike Evans around him. That's why Manziel looked good because he had Mike Evans to just chuck the ball down the field to after running around a bit... you know like Winston did this past season vs Chicago... Mahomes rang up 5k yards and 41 touchdowns with guys that may eek their ways into the backend of the NFL draft... If he had been in a situation like Clemson or even UNC with guys like Switzer/Howard, he might have even looked better. I think Mahomes has a better chance of being Dak than Watson based on supporting casts and results, Dak pretty much carried MSU on his back, Mahomes has done about the same at Tech.UOK wrote:What's really irritating me is that as much as I like both these guys, I feel like the best in-between of both of them is Mahomes, and he's like a poor fusion of them that still has a lot of upside.G08 wrote:This guy gets it.UOK wrote:I wish Watson and Trubisky could be fused into one guy. this feels really spot on to me. I'd be more than happy with Watson, but it feels like he'll be one of those good but not great qb's in the realm of andy dalton or joe flacco. Fans hate those and I dont look forward to listening to people wanting to replace Watson because he's not Tom Brady for the next 10 years.
