He's been awesome standing up, not so much in a 3 point stance.

Can't wait to see him Saturday afternoon!

That’s what he was at UTSA, a stand up OLB.

He looked good in what I saw of him at the Senior bowl... he's also very similar to a guy who played very well in a Fangio coached defense...

6045
263 lbs
35 3/8" arms
83.875" wingspan

Those, of course, are measurements of Aldon Smith at the 2011 combine...

I was a big fan of Davenport, but I'm starting to sour on him in the 1st. He has raw talent, but he plays very upright. Fangio loves his OLBs to be able to get under the pads and I'm not sure this guy has shown that ability.

Which is why Harold Landry is a better fit IMO.

I'm not suggesting we draft Davenport at 8, but you bring up a great point. If anybody can turn his raw talent into something productive its Fangio.

I always like looking at guys who were once considered top prospects and fell and Landry fits that bill. The guy has the explosion that a lot of edge rushers in this draft lack, so I'm good with him in the 2nd.

A guy I've been all over on another board, Lorenzo Carter from Georgia. He could be had right in the 2nd or later...kids a beast. Watch his game against ND and you will come away loving him.

There's a lot of "pretty good" edge rushers in this draft, so it won't surprise me to see a lot of guys start to climb the board when the combine rolls around.

I've already talked about Edmunds, and we've obviously talked about Davenport and Landry...but in addition to Carter and the others that we've mentioned...look for these guys to climb into late first early second round consideration:
Jaylon Ferguson, LA Tech
Justin Lawler, Southern Methodist
Marcell Frazier, Missouri
Chad Thomas, Miami (FL)
Dorance Armstrong, Kansas

In no particular order.

Thomas is an interesting one. Physically impressive but missing something.

Right? I don't know what it is, but for some reason he's not quite the sum of his parts.

Watched an interview on the NFL Network and Mayock asks him that very question. Davenport says that when he was coming out of High School all of the big schools as he put it, "kinda told me that I didn't weigh enough." (weighed 198lbs) At the Senior Bowl practice his measurables were recorded as: 6'5 7/8 and 259lbs. Safe to say he's grown a tad since High School.

Thanks for answering that. I'm always skeptical of the successful college prospect coming from a small school. That makes sense. He put on a bunch of weight and obviously plays well at the extra size.

Ok, so I watched a couple complete games.

Guys a wrecking ball..I mean..WRECKING BALL.

He plays a little wild at times and definitely stays a little too upright, but man he's strong and hard to block one on one.

He's a bit of a project, I just don't know if I could take him at 8

Two words jumped out at me when I watched that video. Texas State. Yes, he was a "wrecking ball". But I'd need to see him play against more potential NFL players before I'd draft him in R1.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Go back to leather helmets, NFL.

It looks like his senior bowl practices were very hot and cold. Also I watched his baylor game cutup and found him to be inconsistent. This guy worries me.

I've cooled on him... I think he's a freak but he's going to be a huge work in progress.

Give me Tremaine Edmunds at pick #8 and our highest WR in round 2.

Here is Davenport in 2016 against Texas A & M, ranked #20 in the country at the time.

Great discipline showed on a reverse...

REVERSE

Powerful punch incapacitates the RT, then gets a hit on the QB...

PUNCH

Really nice job of shedding the block to catch the RB...

SHED

Drives the TE right into the running lane...

LANE

Great catch up speed to tackle the QB, saves a big gain...

CLOSING SPEED

Manhandles the OT and gets the sack...

SACK

Tackled by the OT, drawing a holding penalty..

HOLDING

Also used in coverage for 7 snaps...

COVERAGE

Texas A & M starts double teaming him after halftime...

DOUBLE TEAM

3rd down and 11, and most edge rushers are going to sell out to get to the QB. Instead, Davenport reads this play perfectly. Great maturity...

READ

Puts an incredible move on the blocker, causing him to whiff completely. Then he sheds another block on his way to the RB...

FAKE

Makes the RT his bitch on this play, driving him back 5 yards...

BULL RUSH

Run away from Davenport, but he still catches the RB from the backside...

We don't really know. A good sign is he got better each day at the senior bowl.

I'm circling back on this dude. Still raw as a mother-fucker, but if you look solely at the metrics when comparing him to Aldon Smith, Marcus Davenport is:

1.5" taller
faster in the 10/20/40 yard splits (0.06/0.12/0.24)
2 reps of 225 lbs stronger

~0.5" shorter of a vertical
6" longer broad jump
0.09 second faster short shuttle

0.01 second slower 3-cone
1.75" shorter arms

Yes, at least for this week. The Steven White breakdown was extremely convincing.

I see no reason why this dude can't bulk up to and play at 270 lbs. That's insane if he can keep his burst and speed.

I watched as many interviews and read as much as I could on the kid... sounds like self-confidence is a big issue of his (reports out of the Combine echo that a lot of teams were disappointed in his interview, with him even telling Les Snead of the Rams that he was nervous). I personally don't think it's a big deal, but he's going to be facing grown-ass men that want to kick his ass mentally and physically -- is he strong enough to handle that? Is our defense full of enough good dudes to have his back / build him up?

It was with McPhee. Not sure if we have a leader on our defense right now. Maybe Hicks?
