Why’s that?

Has there been a successful 6’7 outside linebacker?

I like Davenport but I still prefer Harold Landry to Davenport IMO.

I'm always skeptical about players that play against low grade talent and amass big stats. Then everybody ohhhhs and ahhhhhhs over what exactly? But it looks good on YouTube.

Why did no major program pick him up?

I saw him projected to be a DE in a 4-3 (I think). Why a terrible fit for as an OLB for us though?

Unless you are going to bulk him up to play end, he's probably too tall to play OLB. There aren't many (any?) 6'7 outside linebackers. He's gotta be able to cover, turn his hips and run, use his arms right...Same reason you don't see many guards over 6'5, sometimes all that length works against you.

Didn’t Mario Williams play some OLB?

I want an elite pass rush, I don't care how it happens. Fangio is a freaking wizard with coverages on the back end... if you can get him pressure with 4 rushers, it's game over for the offense.

Find someone who looks at you the way G08 looks at situational pass rushers

Davenport at the Senior Bowl:

6057
259 lbs
34" arms
81.25" wingspan

6'5 makes me feel better should he make the transition to LB.

I'm itching to see his dash/cone. If he can go sub 7 in the cone I'll probably jizz in my pants.

I still like Edmunds/Landry as a pure 3-4 OLB. Davenport is certainly intriguing given the Bears spend so much time in sub packages.

I like what they can offer in terms of pass rush and coverage, but I worry having two dudes that barely touch 250 lbs on the edge at the same time. I'd like at least one with some thump to them (McPhee, Ware, etc).

Matt Bowen wrote:UTSA DE Marcus Davenport (6-foot-6, 259 pounds) has already shown flashes of his power at the Senior Bowl workouts, both during individual drills and one-on-one pass rush. Davenport's technique is still raw on film, but he has natural strength at the point of attack and he comes off the ball with speed.

Back in 2005, I watched this kid from Troy play defensive end and I was fascinated by him," Mayock said of Ware. "When we got to the Senior Bowl I followed this kid to every drill. I came away going 'wow.' I get the same tingle watching (Davenport's) tape."

Mayock said Ware was a "natural edge rusher, a kid with toughness and physicality in the run game. He ended up going No. 11 to the Dallas Cowboys."

Davenport, Mayock said, could go that high in the draft that is scheduled to be held, ironically, April 26-28 at the home of the Cowboys, AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

"He's got natural edge skill. He's got physicality, toughness and a great motor," Mayock said of Davenport. "If things turnout the way I think they will, top 11 is not out of the question for Marcus Davenport."

of all the folks out there with opinions on these guys, I trust Mayock the most ... so if he thinks Davenport is all that, I have no problem accepting that as information to utilize

Kid is raw so if we draft him Fangio and Friends will have their work cut out for them.

Thursday's practice was the coming out party for UTSA DE Marcus Davenport. The South team couldn't block him. I thought he was thinking a little bit too much and struggling to get off the ball earlier in the week, but he got after it on Thursday. He was all over the place. He's not a finished product yet, but he finally showed what he's capable of, which was good to see. — Daniel Jeremiah

He's been awesome standing up, not so much in a 3 point stance.

Can't wait to see him Saturday afternoon!

That’s what he was at UTSA, a stand up OLB.

He looked good in what I saw of him at the Senior bowl... he's also very similar to a guy who played very well in a Fangio coached defense...

6045
263 lbs
35 3/8" arms
83.875" wingspan

Those, of course, are measurements of Aldon Smith at the 2011 combine...

I was a big fan of Davenport, but I'm starting to sour on him in the 1st. He has raw talent, but he plays very upright. Fangio loves his OLBs to be able to get under the pads and I'm not sure this guy has shown that ability.

Which is why Harold Landry is a better fit IMO.

I'm not suggesting we draft Davenport at 8, but you bring up a great point. If anybody can turn his raw talent into something productive its Fangio.

I always like looking at guys who were once considered top prospects and fell and Landry fits that bill. The guy has the explosion that a lot of edge rushers in this draft lack, so I'm good with him in the 2nd.

A guy I've been all over on another board, Lorenzo Carter from Georgia. He could be had right in the 2nd or later...kids a beast. Watch his game against ND and you will come away loving him.

There's a lot of "pretty good" edge rushers in this draft, so it won't surprise me to see a lot of guys start to climb the board when the combine rolls around.

I've already talked about Edmunds, and we've obviously talked about Davenport and Landry...but in addition to Carter and the others that we've mentioned...look for these guys to climb into late first early second round consideration:
Jaylon Ferguson, LA Tech
Justin Lawler, Southern Methodist
Marcell Frazier, Missouri
Chad Thomas, Miami (FL)
Dorance Armstrong, Kansas

In no particular order.

Right? I don't know what it is, but for some reason he's not quite the sum of his parts.
