STRENGTHS:

Has a short, compact build that gives him a natural leverage advantage over most NFL offensive linemen. Times the snap well, flashing an explosive burst to slip through gaps. Possesses quick feet, balance and lateral agility to avoid cut-blocks. Accelerates very quickly to close on the ballcarrier. Possesses surprisingly strong and active hands to rip free from blocks and to rip away at the ball when he sees it exposed (three forced fumbles in 2012). Experienced at virtually every position along the defensive line. Instinctive defender who locates the ball well and hustles to get involved in the action. Peels away from blocks, spinning to rip away and pursue laterally or downfield, as needed. Good recognition of deception plays, reading and peeling off to blow up screens and draws. Showed his dedication to the program by earning the "Hard Hat" award for his work in the team's offseason strength and conditioning program in 2010 (year he missed due to academics)... Appears to be significantly heavier, stronger than his listed size by ASU (6-1, 267). Good bloodlines. Father, Mickey, played in the NFL for five years as a defensive back and punt returner with the Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills.

WEAKNESSES:

Obvious size limitations and may prove to be just a rotational defender at the next level. Short arms and can get locked out by the longer arms of offensive linemen. Possesses very good short-area quickness but reaches max speed quickly and appears to have only moderate straight-line speed for the position despite his size. Seems to tire easily. Will make a big play and then disappear for long stretches. Only has one season of sustained success at the FBS level.Compares To: Geno Atkins, DT, Cincinnati Bengals -- Having increased his sack production each of his three seasons in the NFL, the 6-1, 300-pound Atkins has given hope to all undersized, quick-footed defensive tackles that they, too, can find a niche in today's pass-happy NFL.

PLAYER OVERVIEW

Sutton looked like a future star for the Sun Devils as a true freshman, starting the first game of his career, playing in all 12 contests that season and demonstrating the ability to split gaps -- a requirement in then-defensive coordinator Craig Bray's scheme. Operating as a three-technique defensive tackle, Sutton registered 17 tackles, including three for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. While his numbers weren't staggering, Sutton was viewed as a player the team could build around... until it was announced just days before the opener that he'd miss the entire 2011 season due to academics. Sutton was a standout on the scout team, but that success didn't translate into eye-popping statistics upon his return to the starting lineup in 2011. Sutton registered 33 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, but it was hardly the dominant campaign some had projected. Still, his quickness seemed like an ideal fit in new head coach Todd Graham and his co-defensive coordinators' (Paul Randolph and Ron West) scheme. Few, however, could have predicted Sutton's breakout 2012 campaign in which he led the Pac-12 with 1.82 tackles for loss per game (20 in 11 games) and 10.5 sacks on the season. Appearing much stouter on film than the 6-1, 267 pounds he has been officially listed as by Arizona State over the past two years, Sutton could find surprising interest from NFL teams. With the proliferation of spread offenses in the NFL making it imperative that defenses put immediate pressure on the quarterback, "undersized" interior pass rush specialists like Sutton could have a niche, especially as teams begin to rotate their defensive linemen with increasing frequency.

I love me some Will Sutton. I don't love me some Ryan Mundy/Craig Steltz safety combo.

Not typical size but the guy's motor is insane. Emery's not fucking around with the defensive line this year.

He played too heavy at 303 last year...

Much better at 280..in 2012
I watched him alot down here.. Disruptive and quick at lighter weight.

He is not 267..

Some NFL guys questioning why the weight gain this year.

As for safety, maybe Phil is waiting for the vet cuts at camp time, who knows.

I like the pick. However, it's shocking how far Louis Nix have fallen. There were serious debates whether the Bears should take him at 14. I saw draft experts mocking him as high as 11 to the Tennessee Titans. That guy must have degenerative knees or something.

Sutton WAS in fact 267 in 2012. Then 280ish a year ago. Then he ratcheted it up to about 320 at one point during this last season.

I saw him play maybe 20 games..
He is a very BIG 267 then. Announcers routinely mentioned his size..and doubted the 267

But what do I know..
Kid is big..strong and we hated playing against him

Like the value but really thought they would take Pierre Desir there.

Seems clear to me they are looking to look at a hybrid defense. Paea Ego Ratliff can ask 2 gap. Ratliff Paea Sutton can all 1 gap. Houston and Izzy are 5 techs like Bryant who stop the run. Allen young Washington can get up field. Bostic and Shea both can rush the passer.

The NFL.com draft profile had him listed as a round 4-5 pick. Did we reach again with this one? I know nothing about him. It looks like he needs to drop about 25 lbs.

Sutton is real explosive and disruptive when playing at the right weight. Intentionally put on weight this past season cause he didn't want to be labeled "Undersized" and his play really dropped off

Get back to 280,,and 2012 type play..

One thing is for sure, they have a ton of bodies on the DL now.... Either way, going into this draft many of us felt they were going to need 2 DTs reguardless. I know there isn't one of us who didn't want to see a safety within the first 2 rounds, or in at least the first 3... But there must obviously be some kind of plan.... ;/

I wonder if he was asked to put on some weight by the coaching staff. In order to be more of an immovable force in the middle.

When Emery decided to address the OL, this is exactly what he did. Gathered a bunch of bodies together and shook out one hell of an OL We all questioned the Long pick, and thought Mills was nothing more than a longshot to make the team. My guess is that Emery DOES have a plan, and we may end up seeing something like the turnaround we saw on the OL.

Seen him play in person a ton, wife went to and now works for ASU, at 285lbs he is the most disruptive DT in the country, won pac-12 defensive player of the year twice.

He was asked bye the coaches to gain weight, played last year at 320lbs and his frame cant support it.

He said hes at 290 right now, at that weight he has a special first step and rush ability.

Sutton captured his second straight Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award last season with 48 tackles - 13 1/2 for loss - and four sacks. He had 161 tackles and 20 1/2 sacks in four seasons at Arizona State.

And MUCH better at 285-290..then bulked up last year.

Actual scouting seems to have lead to finding great value in the third. I like it!

I'm still a bit shaken on the first two picks.. But I love this one.

This pick makes me like the Ego pick. I thought it was too early for him but it's now clear we were going for 2 DT's so it makes sense. I'm now on board with this draft big time.

He's a Donald type player at 285. If he gets back to that size he and Donald are very similar players imo. I like this pic.

I just found it interesting that, after winning two PAC-12 defensive POY awards, that he would have fallen to the third round. Did his weight and performance in 2013 drop his stock that much?

Not that it's going to matter on the field, but these are a pair of scary looking dudes

It clearly wasn't good wieght he added. I assume they have a better plan for him then they did with Shea.
