Driving the Ford GT, America's fastest supercar

Ford set out to do two things with the new GT. It wanted to sell a limited number to supercar fans, sure, but it also wanted to use this project to bring prestige back to the company’s performance wing. In that sense, the GT was basically a success before this launch even happened. Last year’s win at Le Mans justified all the money, the secrecy, and the work that went into creating the 2017 GT.

But that doesn’t take anything away from the stunning supercar that’s hitting the road now. The new GT is one of the most arresting cars of the last few years, thanks to its iconic style and boundless performance. Yes, it’s ludicrously expensive. Yes, the interior is cramped and comfortless. But will you care as much about those things when you’re heavy on the throttle? No.

The tragedy of the new GT is the same with most supercars: driving one is a dream, but owning one is a fantasy. What I took away from my short time with the GT — besides the shock to my nervous system — is that if you are ever lucky enough to come remotely near a chance to drive the car, do whatever you can to make that happen. Even if that means learning to drive all over again.
the entire article is quite long but worth a read, especially if you are a car nut

I drive a Ford Cmax Energi which was the only plug-in hybrid available in the midwest 3 years ago when I bought it. I'm still impressed by its engineering and technology even after riding in newer cars.

It uses 3 separate batteries for its two drive systems. It has algorithms which force the gasoline engine to run when it senses that oil is starting to settle or when gas is starting to jelly or when the 12V battery has opened too many windows since the last time the alternator spun; all because I might go months using the electric motor instead of the engine.

Motors have instantaneous torque, so while the car has poor 0-60, it has impressive 0-20 which is essential to making a left turn in urban traffic.

The 7-speaker sound system can shuffle my 330GB of losslessly ripped music at one time (it won't show porn videos, any probably, if the car is moving). Large people wearing hats can sit in the front and back seats at the same time. The tailgate cargo space is severely reduced because that's where they stuck the 21-mile battery, but it easily holds a week's groceries or three 1/6 kegs (a month's groceries for me).

I was distressed last year when I visited the Ford museum in Detroit and could not find a single charging station in their bazillion acre parking lot.
