Breaking down the charges against Jets CB Darrelle Revis, plus a look at the next legal steps

Friday February 17th, 2017

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has been charged with felonies for his alleged role in an altercation that took place in Pittsburgh last Sunday. According to a statement released by the Pittsburgh Police Department (PPD), the incident began when an unnamed 22-year old man recognized Revis while walking at around 2:30 am. He then approached Revis, who hails from nearby Aliquippa, Pa., to see if it was really Revis. Revis confirmed his identity to the man.

At that point, the encounter turned problematic.

The man took out his cell phone and started to record Revis, who promptly asked the man to stop. The man refused and continued to record Revis. A frustrated Revis then grabbed the man’s phone and tried, unsuccessfully, to delete the video. Revis then tossed the phone onto the street. Around this time, an unidentified 21-year-old man came to aid the 22-year-old man. As the two men argued with Revis, yet another unidentified man arrived at the scene. This person arrived to assist Revis, which led to an apparent square off between Revis and his associate on one side and the 22- and 21-year old guys on the other. Punches were then thrown and the 22- and 21-year-old men were knocked out. Witnesses told the police that the two men were unconscious for about 10 minutes. They were both hospitalized and one of them suffered a serious facial injury.

A crucial piece of evidence was left behind: the 22-year-old’s cellphone and its video contents. An officer reviewed the video and confirmed that Revis was present at the scene. It’s unclear whether the video implicates Revis in committing a crime. That said, Revis has been charged with robbery, terroristic threats, conspiracy and aggravated assault.

Couple of things here:

1) One of the main reasons I hate smart phones. People think they can tape anything without regard to who they are taping. Some have become to dependent on being attached to everything (social media, goings on in the world) that they have lost respect for the simple things.

2) Why didn't he just get the hell out of there when the guy decided to quit recording?

Darrelle Revis Threatened Witness After Street Fight
PITTSBURGH (CBSNewYork/AP) — A witness claims that seconds after Darrelle Revis got into a street fight with two men, the Jets star approached him with his fists clenched and asked, “Do you want to be next?”

The statement from Nathan Watt is included in a complaint report filed by a Pittsburgh police officer.

Revis is expected to turn himself in to police after being charged with two counts of aggravated assault, along with charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and terroristic threats, a misdemeanor.

The altercation occurred around 2:45 a.m. Sunday in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood. Dallas Cousins, 22, told police he approached Revis on the street after recognizing him and started taking cellphone video of the All-Pro cornerback only after Revis, 31, became agitated. Cousins said Revis then pushed him in the chest, grabbed the phone, attempted to delete the video and then tossed the phone in the street.

A police officer reviewed the video, which he said showed Revis, a native of nearby Aliquippa, becoming hostile but walking away before asking, “Why are you following me?” several times.

Cousins and his roommate, Zacheriah Jarvis, 21, who claims he tried to help his friend, were both knocked out for several minutes before waking up to talk to police. Neither they nor Watt saw who threw the punches, the police report said. Another unidentified man, who might have been a friend of Revis’, had walked up on the scene, the complaint said.

Cousins and Jarvis declined medical treatment at the scene, but later went to a hospital. Cousins said he was diagnosed with a fracture near his eye, and Jarvis had a bruised cheek.

not only that, they are a danger to themselves as they mindlessly walk into traffic while focused on their phones

my guess is alcohol was involved, increasing the odds of minor things turning into major troubles

They going to get paid.

In my opinion its stupid that this is even a thing. Hell I don't even think most of it should be illegal.

the world has certainly changed with the rampant cell phone use and celebrities who seem to have issues with their celebrity status ... wouldn't surprise me if there are new laws put in place to address both

Charges against Darrelle Revis in Pittsburgh case dismissed

A judge has dismissed all charges against NFL defensive back Darrelle Revis stemming from a February altercation in Pittsburgh.

Revis had been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault, one felony count each of robbery and conspiracy, and a misdemeanor count of terroristic threats. A TMZ video showed two men unconscious after a brawl, but Revis' attorneys said their client was not the person who knocked out the men.

Revis appeared in municipal court Wednesday where the judge decided to dismiss the charges after hearing testimony from one of Revis' childhood friends. The friend told the judge he came to Revis' defense during an altercation and punched the men, knocking them out.

Revis, a four-time All-Pro who was released by the New York Jets two weeks ago, had been ordered to appear at all hearings and instructed not to have any contact with the alleged victims and witnesses -- not even on social media. He had to submit his passport.

The incident in question occurred at 2:43 a.m. ET on Feb. 12 on Pittsburgh's popular South Side. Two men, ages 21 and 22, told police that they were punched and knocked out amid a verbal altercation with Revis, though they did not know who hit them.

Witnesses said the two men were unconscious for 10 minutes, according to police, but also did not know who hit the men.

Revis, 31, is a free agent and has said he'd like to continue his NFL career, which includes a Super Bowl championship with New England and seven Pro Bowl selections.
