When I hear the discussion about Trubisky and Kizer possibly going ahead of Watson, I shake my head...didn't this guy slice and dice an Alabama defense with a bunch of guys that will play in the NFL? Is he not a 3 year starter, not a one and done guy?
I just don't see how DW is not the clear cut #1 QB.

Successful college QBing isn't as predictive of successful pro QBing as you think it is.ysleblanc wrote:When I hear the discussion about Trubisky and Kizer possibly going ahead of Watson, I shake my head...didn't this guy slice and dice an Alabama defense with a bunch of guys that will play in the NFL? If Watson doesn't make it in the NFL, it won't be for lack of effort on his part. That's what I love about him. His drive. A lot of QB's had success in college that didn't translate to the NFL because they thought they could get by on talent and not put in the effort.
That's not Watson.

The issue with Watson is he may not have the physical tools to be an NFL level QB... the 49 MPH at the combine does not bode well... especially since it seems that since 2008 only one QB who threw the ball at the combine under 54 MPH is a starter in the NFL, Tyrod Taylor, and he was a 5th round pick who bounced around the league a couple years before he finally won a starting spot and that said, there are some who would even question how successful he has been... Now I'm not saying it is a cut and dry stat considering that there are plenty QBs who never threw at the combine and thus there is no recorded number for their velocity but based on the data we do have, 49 MPH doesn't look good. If Watson ends up in the first round, he will be the first QB with a recorded under 50 MPH to go in the first... and that's based on his college performance and his mental make up but if his arm isn't enough, it could be enough to prevent him from becoming a great QB... that's where the questions come from...ysleblanc wrote:When I hear the discussion about Trubisky and Kizer possibly going ahead of Watson, I shake my head...didn't this guy slice and dice an Alabama defense with a bunch of guys that will play in the NFL? Also not sure if anyone has said this but everyone here's new favorite whipping boy also threw it 49 MPH at the combine in 2013... and we see how excited everyone here is at getting Glennon now, it's possible he's an example of how Watson will be viewed 4 years from now...

I'm just going off the available data and the fact is of the recorded velocity tests, almost all the guys who throw under 54 MPH haven't had success in the NFL.G08 wrote:Oh God damn it with the MPH bullshit.
And Glennon does have a solid arm, just watch his games.

I have two questions:
Were they all asked to throw max velocity? Or were they being monitored more for their release and accuracy?

Shane Carden is on that list. Remember when he was going to be the next Brett Favre?

They were positioned between two radar guns and told to rip it. I'm not trying to knock Watson, someone asked why there were questions and that's part of why...G08 wrote:I have two questions:

Going back to 2008, the only one they seems to have been below 55 MPH and has success so far was Dak. It's an interesting list to look through. Definitely makes me wonder if he can be successful in the NFL or not.

Is this accurate? I've never heard that they were told to stand between two guns and throw it as hard as they can.BamaBear09 wrote:They were positioned between two radar guns and told to rip it. Even still, seeing Christian Ponder above Mike Glennon makes me laugh. Brad Kaaya with a higher MPH than Glennon as well? I sincerely hope people don't put stock in this.

I thought they just took the highest number of all of their throws at the combine. I didn't know they specifically had to throw it as hard as they could.BamaBear09 wrote:They were positioned between two radar guns and told to rip it. That's what I thought as well... I've never heard of what Bama is referencing. I sure as hell have never seen it and I embarrassingly have watched more Combine coverage than one man should in a lifetimeAdipost wrote:I thought they just took the highest number of all of their throws at the combine. I misread, this season they changed the test, they had them throw one left and gunned it and then throw right and gunned it... previous they just had them toss it.G08 wrote:Is this accurate? There's been a "knock" on Watson since high school that he has a mediocre arm, but a scout went on to explain that Watson was so concerned with pinpoint accuracy that often times he would take something off his ball to make sure he could 'feather' it into the receiver.
I've seen dude rip it more than enough to not worry about his arm... he can get it 58 yards fine; I don't need more than 45-55 if I'm being honest.

Like I said, I was surprised when that number came back because I've seen him make deep throws with ease, only brought it up because the person asked why there were questions.G08 wrote:There's been a "knock" on Watson since high school that he has a mediocre arm, but a scout went on to explain that Watson was so concerned with pinpoint accuracy that often times he would take something off his ball to make sure he could 'feather' it into the receiver.

I don't think Watson makes it out of the top 12. But I have no idea where he goes.

I'm good with one of two things:wab wrote:I don't think Watson makes it out of the top 12. But I have no idea where he goes.
1. Trade down to 8, take your top rated QB, and play around with our 3 2nd round picks
2. Take Watson at 3 and smile at the first round talent that falls into our lap at #36

There's no reason if you really think about it... I would have to think Pace and scouts have vetted (vet?) him enough.wab wrote:Having not visited with him gives me pause.
Not getting him up on the board with our OC, though, bothers me.

Watson has the quickest release in this draft, same exact time as Aaron Rodgers.
Ball velocity comes out about 2mph slower than Kizer/Trubisky.

Mine come from actual games, not the Combine where players are not told to throw the ball as hard as they can.Moriarty wrote:Not from what I've seen:G08 wrote:Watson has the quickest release in this draft, same exact time as Aaron Rodgers.

At the Combine, you're focused on accuracy.
