We're just talking about 2017 now. Who will perform the best this year? There are only 5 to choose from. To recap:

R1... Mitch Trubisky QB
R2... Adam Shaheen TE
R4... Eddie Jackson S
R4... Tarik Cohen RB
R5... Jordan Morgan OG

This is a difficult choice as each guy has significant obstacles to getting on the field.

Mitch Trubisky will not start. In fact, he may not even play in case of a Glennon injury if he's not ready. And right now we have nothing to tell us he's ready. At UNC, he sat for 2 years before starting and there's every indication that Loggains will not rush him in. Maybe we'll see him in week 15 if we're bad. Could happen.

Adam Shaheen probably has the greatest opportunity to play. But the guy just has so-so traits as a pass catcher IMO. He's not fast. He's fast for his size. That means he's on the slow side for an NFL TE, but has the bulk to box defenders out. And coming out of OTAs there's nobody reporting that he's running away from anybody. The competition upgrade from small college to the NFL could overwhelm him, at least this year. He may get the most PT, but there's little reason to think he'll be very productive out of the gate. And he will be the #3 TE after all. He has real bust potential in my book.

Eddie Jackson is coming off a broken leg (that's not healed yet) and we just signed Quintin Demps to start at his FS position. That's the negative. But there are reasons for hope. He reportedly will be 100% for TC. Demps will enter TC at age 32. Other Bears Ss have underwhelmed. Jackson's TC time will start slowly and ramp up. He has ball skills our secondary desperately needs. I see one of two things happening that gets him significant PT... Demps gets hurt or Amos gets replaced, maybe by moving Demps to SS and promoting Jackson. S is not a long learning curve position.

Tarik Cohen is a real wildcard. He looks like a PR guy to me, although whether they'll use him there is unknown. It seems unlikely that he'd get much time a RB, although it seems like they tend to give everyone a chance here and there. Give a guy a chance and if he's electric, he could get on the field more. Of the small school guys, I tend to think the adjustment to the NFL will be the least for him.

Jordan Morgan is a name I don't expect to see on offense this year. He can't be any higher than the #4 OG. I expect him to use his superhero powers of invisibility all year.

Eddie Jackson is my choice. And I could be totally wrong. :-P

Going with Cohen. I think he'll be our PR and our change of pace back... he's got some homerun potential to him and I anticipate him breaking at least one to the house.

I'll second that, with Eddie Jackson a close second

I forgot that Eddie Jackson was a good PR guy in college.

Cohen was my second choice, although based on PT Shaheen is a more obvious choice.

I'm going with Jackson. Aside from Demps, there isn't much standing in his way from seeing the field a lot, assuming his leg is fine of course.

I'll go out on a limb and say it will be Trubisky by a mile.

I'm saying Shaheen. I think he'll be best TE in camp and will get most opportunities in games.

I understand the "change of pace back," but how do you figure PR? He had 1 PR in college and 1 KR. He had more pass attempts (4) than returns.

Jackson is the college PR. That should get him dressed for games, and that will get him some opportunities on defense as well.

But I have to believe Shaheen gets the most playing time. Last year, Braunecker, UDFA, appeared in 13 games and started 2. How can a 2nd rounder get less?

I'm throwing in with Cohen. It seems pretty likely for him to be the punt returner and if he can provide a little pass protection indications are he'll be in a lot on third downs.

If Zach Miller isn't on the 53, then Shaheen could emerge as the winner.

If Daniel Brown continues to perform, I could see Miller getting traded or even cut. Not that he deserves any of it, but such is life in the NFL.

A lot depends on how you define production. I went with Shaheen as he'll be a red zone threat if nothing else. I think he'll have more TD's (3 or 4?) and receiving yards than Cohen just because of opportunity. I doubt Jackson has the same number of interceptions.

Of course, if Trubisky gets in it had better be him.

I'll go with Tanner Gentry.

I mean realistically Shaheen is the logical choice.

They might not have any real positive rookie production this year.

The question was draft picks. But if you're going to include the undrafteds, I'll take Andy Phillips.

I don't think Daniel Brown will make the team. They signed a TE on the first day of free agency and drafted one in the second round. That doesn't really scream "we're happy with what we have now." I see Zach as starter for one more year, Dion the blocker, Adam the grooming, and Bronk the deep threat.

Bringing in 1 TE says "hedging against health". Bringing in 2 says to me "thanks, and good luck".

I'll be surprised if he's back.

Let's see, choices are:

1) QB with 13 games experience behind a new QB making ~14M
2) Blocking TE* behind a blocking TE, jumping up from DII
4) 4th rounder not fully recovered from injury
4) midget 4th rounder
5) DII player making partial position change
*) rookie kicker

* Yeah, he was a great receiving weapon in DII, but the speed and agility numbers don't project encouragingly for that at the NFL level

I guess I give a slight edge to Cohen.
But anyone could take it...because it's probably going to take very, very little to be the top contributor.

Trubisky.

I see Glennon being injured or incredibly ineffective by mid-season and he gets the start.

i absolutely agree with G08 here. Everything the team's been doing would point to continuing to bank on brown's potential vs. an aging, oft injured vet. and i really like miller quite a bit! but it seems weird given the obvious direction we've been hurtling in the last two years, to think that miller is a lock and the young UDFA who showed some flashes last year is hitting the street.

it's not even that i think brown is a lock, i just am super skeptical that miller will be on the roster week 1.

For the record, I really liked this draft. My only complaint (and it's a significant one) is that there isn't a single day one starter among them.

And I guess that's kind of my overall complaint about how Pace drafts...he takes an awful lot of situational players and few guys that can play every down.

At this point it has to be Adam Shaheen for me for the following reasons:
  • He's a pass catching TE whose blocking needs work. Miller is really the only other pass catching TE, he has an unfortunate injury history and a lot of posters here have doubts about whether he will even make the roster.

Given the Bears situation (new QBs, quality RB, lacklustre WR corps etc.) most expect the Bears to be a run first team and use a lot of two TE sets so there's plenty of potential for him to get on the field.

He's a big red zone target who caught a lot of TDs in college, albeit not at the highest level. He may or may not get a lot of receptions, but I expect him to get a few TDs because of this. The red zone offense was awful last year and that was with Jeffery. I don't see any of the current WRs being better options.

He's been getting reps with the first team during OTAs and Mini Camp.
Mitch Trubisky isn't expected to start ahead of Glennon at present and is therefore only going to get limited reps in practice. The only way I can see him getting meaningful game time is if Glennon sucks big time or picks up a season-ending injury. If Glennon is out with a short-term injury I think they're more likely to roll with Sanchez for a game or two rather than throw in Trubisky.

Eddie Jackson would be more of a contender for me, given the paucity of talent at safety, if he had been a full participant in the offseason program, but he's being eased back slowly from his broken leg. Fox is so conservative I expect him to go with Amos, at least initially. If Jackson shows starter potential then it's less likely that he'll be asked to field punts given that it was on a return that he broke his leg last year.

Tarik Cohen may be an exciting player to watch, but at 5'6 and 180lbs he's not going to be spelling Howard when he needs a breather. He'll have to have a package of plays specifically designed for him and that means he won't see the field for more than a handful of snaps a game at best.

Jordan Morgan is unlikely to make the 53. The team has too much talent on the interior and he's very raw, so it's much more likely that he'll wind up on the practice squad.

Jackson said he's 100% healed and that Fox wanted him to take it easy until Training Camp.

I hope the kid starts opposite Demps, I really do.

I hope he at least takes the nickle job from HJQ. It would be nice if the Bears are able field a nice quality trio of safeties again at some point in my lifetime.

I like Jackson a lot. I don't like Demps as much as a lot of people do, but I get the signing. It would be great if Jackson, Amos, and Bush could be those guys in the future (and I know everyone hates Bush for some reason).

Truthfully, I still am not a fan of Deon Bush because of that blown coverage against Green Bay. Not fair to hold it against a rookie, but I am at this point.

Demps is a proven veteran that recognizes routes and knows how to get his defense lined up properly. Eddie Jackson, by all accounts, was that type of presence in Alabama's secondary. Putting him next to Demps allows him to lean on a veteran a bit while still learning the NFL game.

My only concern is his size and, IMO, "fear" of sticking his nose in support. Dude shies away from contact.

I went with Shaheen because of the red zone opportunities and targets he'll receive in general. I think Miller will be traded or cut (most likely cut) before the season starts leaving Sims and Shaheen as the primary two TE's. Even though Shaheen's 40 yard dash and agility drills weren't great for an NFL TE - he still plays faster in pads IMO. I think he'll be able to create separation and use his size to his advantage against NFL safeties and LB's trying to cover him. Without a proven WR target, I can see Shaheen being a security blanket for Glennon early on - especially since they're both 6'6.

I was with you on Conte, not because I thought he was great--he certainly wasn't--but because he was SO reviled that fans seriously undervalued him, IMO. Deon Bush... Not so much. :-p
