I'm picking Lions in my football pool but reality is I think they can pull it off if Barkley can play turnover free.

Barkley comes back to earth a bit and the Bears are just too depleted to make anything happen.

My dream scenario for the weekend...
Howard runs for 100+. Barkley plays well -- throws for 300 yards and 2-3 TDs, but Lions win the shootout 27-24
Packers lose to Seattle. Lions have 3 game division lead with 3 to go.
(It pains me a bit to root for Detroit, but anything to keep GB out of the playoffs)

I picked up a couple of tickets for this one. Pretty excited about it. I don't think the Bears will win - but I won't be surprised at all if they do. I don't think the Lions have had an impressive season so far. Maybe the Skins win, or the Colts in Week 1. The rest were against struggling teams (e.g. Vikes, Saints, Eagles, Jags, Rams). I know the Bears lost to some of those teams too... but the defense is playing better, and Barkely...well, we'll see.
The Lions LBs aren't that great. Howard is a beast, and Carey isn't a huge dropoff. They have to respect the Bear running game, and I think the Loggains will use that and a productive Barkley-executed screen game (which is exciting) to keep the Lions pass rush honest & open things up for Barkely in the passing game. I think Bellamy and Meredith can succeed against the Lions focused on stopping the run. That's what I'm hoping anyway. Seems reasonable. lol

This one has the makings of a near blowout. The Bears beat the Lions earlier in the year and they will remember that. They are in the playoff race. We have a mountain of injuries. Stafford is playing the best football of his career. Barkley plays a real NFL defense.

You know who I'm really looking forward to seeing in this game? Leonard Floyd. A guy with that kind of speed and athletic ability hitting his stride and now playing on turf? Holy crap!
Edit... Upon further review, I don't think it'll be quite that bad.

Add me to the list of supporters of the dream scenario. Lions need just two more wins + 1 Pack loss to seal this thing. We can get 2 of those three this week and keep ourselves from moving out of top 5 draft status.

Living in the greater Detroit area & watching them every week... I haven't been "wowed" by the Lions D this year and tend to agree with FO in general. The Lions D makes some plays but doesn't seem to be remotely dominant over the course of a game. It seems like they've played a lot of teams who have been in a funk, or shooting themselves in the foot. While the Bears seem to have found some offensive rhythm of late.malk wrote:Weirdly Football Outsiders hate Detroit's defence. www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef
I'm also down with the above dream scenario.
FO does have the Lions playing fairly well against the pass to RBs... so maybe my screen dreams won't pan out.
Regardless... I like the Bear offenses' chances against the Lions D. Just based on having watched every game of both teams this year. I also like the younger Bear team going into Ford Field, and expect them to not be intimidated by the Bears' recent losing ways here.

Carey has gotten a ton of short yardage carries which impact his YPC. Plus he brings better hands to the passing game. I find he isn't a big drop off when he comes in.

They should just give Hall the start, IMO. I mean what is there to lose? A game?

Yes, you did. Unless you thought the point of my post was to get into a nitpicking discussion about the relative ypc of the Bear RBs. Which it wasn't. Clearly.Mikefive wrote:It's a message board. I'd like to see the Bears win this weekend and against the Pack. Then lose the other ones, and still be in the range to snag Peppers.Mike wrote:At this point in the season I am honestly torn...
On the one hand, I want us to win out and finish the season strong. This would be good for the development of our young roster heading into next season. It shows that the team is progressing in the right direction, and when the injured players are healthy, well, we can take an even bigger step forwards. Also, if Barkley plays well in the remaining games and gets the wins to go along with his performances, then that potentially lets us focus on continuing to build the rest of the roster rather than worrying over the quarterback position.
On the other hand, we could use that high draft pick. There are some potentially really good defensive players available in next year's draft. There's the potential scenario of trading the pick away for more assets. Plus, as long as the team competes, then positives can be taken from defeats going forwards. Though four straight defeats would likely push us into the conversation for drafting a quarterback high in the draft - something I'd prefer we didn't do. It would also likely cost John Fox his job. Granted he hasn't been amazing so far, but I still believe he can be the right head coach for us going forwards.
With that in mind, I'd like to see us hand another defeat to the Lions, and the way we have been playing it is a possibility. But if I take my Bears hat off, I think the Lions beat us 24 - 17, something like that.

I don't get the hype with Peppers, tbh. He has what, one career INT? He doesn't have a clearly defined position and I don't see him as an elite cover CB either. He's a pretty good returner and is decent in the box, but I don't think you need to spend a top 10 pick on a DB that isn't much of a ball hawk. I don't understand the hype either. i think he just had one return TD this year as well. Helluva an athlete, but iMO, a question mark that I would not be pursuing in the top 10.

To be fair, Barkley has a much stronger rapport/chemistry w/ the lower-run WRs than the elites, because that's who throws to in practice and on the PS.Bears Whiskey Nut wrote:So Barkley is throwing to Bellamy and Meredith? Great.UOK wrote:@BobLeGere
