Re: So if you were the Bears next GM..

Whilst we're busy fantasising about trading players for draft picks let's try to remember that no matter how good the next GM is he's not going to be landing quality players with every one. There is a tendency to place far to much value on the unknown promise of draft picks over proven commodities....

Re: So if you were the Bears next GM..

Priority (in order): WR, WR, Safety, ILB, CB, Swing OT, C I don't see how WR isn't the top priority on everyone's list. Without a top pick they may get lucky and have a good one drop to the 2nd rounder. But most likely it will need to be two FAs to join Mooney. Dazz, Grant and maybe Adams. Put it t...

Re: So if you were the Bears next GM..

I very narrowly put CB as the biggest need. But I also rarely take CB in simulations. There's a ton of needs on this team - they're about as far away from "2-3 players from being ready" as you can get. You have to be flexible and go where you can improve the most. And the CB talent general...

Re: Chicago sports legend Les Grobstein passes away

I didn't realize he had the level of credentials he did.
I always thought of him as a semi-lovable crackpot.

Also thought he was a bit younger than he was.
He was definitely iconic and it's sad to see him go.

Several Bears players and coaches are hoping Kelly gets the job, sources added.
Well, he's the least likely to upset the applecart and send people packing.

Which is a definite negative.
But he does have some positive, too.

Well...put it this way -

He really wanted Sabin. The gap between the Bears' offer and what Sabin wanted was, metaphorically speaking, somewhat larger than the Grand Canyon.

Re: Compensation pick outlook

The non-CFA route is a really interesting loophole I didn't realize existed until fairly recently. Exploit whenever possible. Old guys aren't very desirable right now (aside from cheap stopgaps who may not qualify anyway), but they're not always old. Sometimes a player gets a big 2nd contract, does...

Re: Compensation pick outlook

They'd of course be offset by any CFAs the Bears sign. The Bears could focus on non-CFAs which typically is an older guy who has been cut. Or they could focus on deals below the 7th round threshold, probably around 1.8M. The non-CFA route is a really interesting loophole I didn't realize existed un...

Re: Compensation pick outlook

It all depends what you do with your roster spots. I, for one, am a HUGE proponent of free draft picks (maximizing your comps). However, there is a limit of 4/yr, and they tend not to be as high as you always think/hope they will be. I would be furious if a new GM comes into a situation like this on...

Re: Chicago Bears fire HC Matt Nagy & GM Ryan Pace

What will happen if the Bears are blown away by a HC interview and want to snap the guy up? How many GM candidates get chapped by being cut out if the process and decide they can't work with this regime? A good question. My guess is "most of them, particularly the more experienced and more des...

Re: 2022 Salary Cap Outlook, v2 (PostPace)

I think that's a really accurate representation of where the Bears are right now. I think his scale is too weighted to draft IMO. Draft capital is generally a long term building block, but then he's also using short term cap number in that resource with an adjustment I think for ability to prorare ...

Re: 2022 Salary Cap Outlook, v2 (PostPace)

They key is to not over pay mediocre talent, like we did Cody Whitehair. Paying an average player top 5 money in the league it what kills your cap. My philosophy is you should be letting average players walk unless they are willing to take a below average deal (say average of 15th to 20th highest p...

Given the massive dearth of WR talent, I'm surprised they let him go. Yeah, the drop was ugly, but that's 1 play.

Also, the futures contracts were announced after Pace's firing. Does that mean Champ was behind that decision?

You're talking about 2nd Round SE types? Who? My feeling is that the Bears couldn't find a sure starter in the 2nd or later so it makes sense to sign FAs instead and plan to move Mooney accordingly. Re: 2022 Salary Cap Outlook, v2 (PostPace)

The Bears absolutely can go after Devante Adams, they are not in that bad of a cap position. You can give Adams a 5 yr $25M per contract but only have it cost $10-15M against next years cap very easily. There are only a few players that have negative cap hits if cut or traded, so there is a ton of ...

I honestly don't know how to respond to a hypothetical where slightly below average to average is 10x cost driver. So I guess I won't. Like I said, it's a silly exaggeration to prove a point. Most decisions aren't this clear-cut, or there'd be no arguing and no need for intelligent GMs. But it illu...

The idea isn't the be the most cap efficient team, it's to be the team with the best talent. Cap efficiency can help make that possible, but only to a point. Disagree While the first part is technically true, you're almost never becoming the team with the best talent without excelling at efficiency...

God, I hate that season-long QBR stat for Fields. Especially because they're so bad only because of really 1 or 2 games.
