Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane is the subject of a police investigation in of Hamburg, New York, his offseason home, The Buffalo News reported Wednesday.

The newspaper, citing two sources with knowledge of the investigation, did not disclose the nature of the allegation against the 26-year-old Kane. It said no charges have been filed, and as of Thursday morning, it did not know whether police had questioned Kane.

Sources told The News that Hamburg Police officials have instructed their officers and detectives not to publicly discuss the probe.

"We can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of a criminal investigation until such a time as a person is charged with a crime," Hamburg Police Chief Gregory G. Wickett said, according to The News.

Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III also could not confirm the investigation to The News.

Messages ESPN left with Kane's agent and the Blackhawks were not immediately returned.

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane is the subject of a rape investigation by police in the Buffalo suburb of Hamburg, according to The Buffalo News. The report said a woman accused Kane of sexual assault in an incident over the last weekend.

Asked if he could comment on the nature of an investigation, Hamburg police chief Gregory Wickett told USA TODAY Sports, “No, not at all. I cannot even confirm there is an investigation.”

The Buffalo News cited two unnamed law enforcement sources who said the woman went to a hospital where a rape kit was performed. Kane, 26, is a Buffalo native who lives in Hamburg during the offseason.

"We are aware of a police investigation and are following developments," Frank Brown, the NHL's group vice president of communications, told USA TODAY Sports.

The Blackhawks also released a statement to USA TODAY Sports: “We are aware of the matter and are in the process of gathering information. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Police confirm investigation into Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane

HAMBURG, NY. — Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane has yet to comment or go out in public since the rape allegation shocked hockey fans less than 24 hours ago.

The 26-year-old star returned to the Buffalo area where he grew up just after the Stanley Cup celebration here in Chicago less than two months ago.

Sources are telling The Buffalo News, a young local woman claims Kane took her to his waterfront home in Hamburg and raped her after they met at a nightclub Saturday night.

Police were seen at Kane’s home looking for evidence on Sunday.

In a brief statement Friday, Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett confirmed the investigation:

“The Town of Hamburg Police Department is investigating an incident that allegedly occurred at a residence of NHL player Patrick Kane last weekend. At this time, we are gathering information and awaiting forensic testing results. We will have no further comment on this investigation at this time.”

The hockey superstar has been out in Buffalo often, with fans documenting much of it on Twitter.

Last weekend, one tweeted “Patrick Kane bought me a birthday shot last night.”

Another tweeted, “Kane is bombed at the bar. Told me he was too bombed for a pic… So of course I snap chatted a pic of him anyway.”

Kane’s latest trouble follows recent praise for his maturity in the wake of his 2009 arrest in Buffalo after an altercation with a cab driver. He pleaded guilty in that case and the criminal charges were dropped.

The Blackhawks and Kane’s agent issued statements saying they are still gathering information so they are offering no further comment.

CHICAGO (CBS) — You don’t know him on a meaningful level. Maybe he signed your kid’s hat that one time. Maybe you took a picture with him at a golf outing a few years ago.

But Patrick Kane is not your friend. You are not his dawg, and he is not your bro. For all intents and purposes he doesn’t care about you no matter how many times you’ve swooned at him saying something about “not being able to accomplish this without you great fans.”

And you need to stop with the garbage default setting of rushing to defend him. Even under the guise of “innocent until proven guilty.”

History tells us that a story like this sexual assault allegation against Kane does not end well for anyone involved. It also suggests that should an outcome conclude in favor of Kane, the rape culture we live in and unbalanced system of law enforcement and judicial process in sexual assault cases does not mean he did nothing wrong.

I want you to realize that right now and acknowledge it and give it the credence it deserves. A lack of charge, prosecution, or guilty verdict over sexual assault does not mean sexual assault did not occur. It’s entirely possible no wrongdoing on Kane’s part went on, but innocent until proven guilty applies to this particular celebrity avoiding jail time. It does not exonerate him from what he and his accuser know happened between them. It does not help his frat boy reputation, which isn’t illegal but damn sure isn’t palatable once is crosses the line between drunk video cult hero and this kind of accusation. And it does not make his words at the most recent Blackhawks rally any less prophetic.

Our selfish fan culture causes us to reflexively think “Whoa, I hope Kaner comes out okay from whatever this is (and doesn’t miss any playing time for the Hawks).” That reaction, of course, fails to consider the other mentioned person supposedly involved—the unnamed woman.

And in Chicago we have been largely free of our star athletes being involved in crimes against women. Ray McDonald, an embarrassing most recent example, thankfully never dressed for the Bears. Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was never charged after an “exhaustive” investigation into a sexual assault allegation—still, his name comes up at a time like this. That lack of incidents like Kane’s, though, has always made it so easy for Chicago sports fans to condemn from afar.

New details emerge in allegations against NHL star Patrick Kane

The woman alleges that Kane invited her and a female friend to his home for a private party after they met him last Saturday night at SkyBar, a popular nightclub on Franklin Street, the sources said.

Shortly after she and her friend arrived at Kane’s home on Old Lakeshore Road, the accuser alleges that she went by herself into another room, where Kane followed her, overpowered her and raped her, the sources said.

The woman left Kane’s home with her friend and used a cellphone to call a relative immediately after the alleged attack. She then went to a local hospital for examination, and police were called afterward, the sources said.

The alleged attack occurred about 4 a.m. last Sunday, about an hour after Kane was seen leaving SkyBar.

A person who knows the woman described her as frantic and traumatized when she called her relative to report what happened.

Video game giant EA Sports announced on Wednesday afternoon that it will no longer be using Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane on the cover of its upcoming NHL game and that he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of the game.

Here is the full statement from EA Sports.

"In light of the ongoing investigation involving Patrick Kane, he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of EA Sports NHL '16.

"He will not appear on the EA Sports NHL 16 cover nor participate in other EA Sports NHL 16 promotional activities."

The company chose Kane, along with Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, to be on the cover for this year's version of the game. They were going to be the first teammates to ever appear on the cover of the game. It is now expected that the cover will feature only Toews.

What's funny is her coworkers are upset at the bar owners comments. In all reality those comments kind of substantiate her claim. Obviously it sounds like the victims friend was all over Kane. The victims friend convinces her to go to his house.
