I'm massively proud of Nagy. What a coach and what a great attitude and positive energy.G08 wrote:Good for Nagy, and WTF Pace got fucking hosed.
For Pace, I think he should've fixed the kicker problem earlier in the year.

But yes you are right.

after Parkey's 4 doinks against Detroit, there should have been a regular parade of kicker tryouts
maybe Pace should have played closer attention to how the Vikings addressed their highly touted draft pick after he sucked :
Vikings release kicker Daniel Carlson
Eight-year veteran Dan Bailey is expected to sign with the Vikings pending a physical, according to coach Mike Zimmer, after the team waived rookie kicker Daniel Carlson on Monday. Carlson, a fifth-round pick, missed three field goals during the Vikings’ 29-29 tie in Green Bay on Sunday, including a game-winning 35-yard attempt during the closing seconds of overtime.
The team’s decision to waive Carlson after two regular season games was “pretty easy,” according to Zimmer.
“Did you see the game?” Zimmer asked rhetorically.
The Vikings cut the cord with Carlson after he made just 5 of 10 field goal attempts, including his uneven preseason. The 23-year-old kicker made his only field goal from 48 yards away during the Week 1 win against San Francisco. He then missed all three attempts against the Packers from 35, 48 and 49 yards — two in overtime.

Except Carson, a draft pick, went on to be very good in Oakland, and bailey missed 7 field goals and an extra point. While Carson went on to go 16 for 17 on field goals and 100% on extra points. The Marshall Plan wrote:Agreed.Boris13c wrote:The Marshall Plan wrote:I'm massively proud of Nagy. So the vikings wasted a draft pick, ate the salary and ended up being worse over all in field goal percentage between the two kickers for the season.
As it pertains to special teams and kickers, don't ever do what Zimmer and the vikings do. Their kicking game has been a disaster and revolving door for years.

The Vikings weren't going to know Carson would go on to do that. The idea I support is that when a GM or a coach identifies a problem, they try to fix it. Had Parkey been benched or cut or if they had brought in 4 kickers after that Detroit game to compete with him in practice that week then that FG against the Eagles is made and we could still be playing this season.southdakbearfan wrote:Except Carson, a draft pick, went on to be very good in Oakland, and bailey missed 7 field goals and an extra point. Here is my point, when you invest in a kicker, be it a draft pick or free agent, to cut him after 2 games is moronic. It is an indictment of your scouting department if it's that quick of turn around. The Marshall Plan wrote:The Vikings weren't going to know Carson would go on to do that. Parkey is a lot different as he was a free agent, but they invested heavily in him. I think Pace did the right thing sticking with him through the season and if he decides to release him during the offseason or training camp or whenever I am all on board regardless of the costs.
It's apples and oranges. One GM/coach showed some patience and the other showed he is an idiot, just like he is with his offensive coaches.

I understand the AP choice to be the "big" award.
So does that mean this PFWA is just "second tier" or no?
