Who are the obvious and not so obvious cuts?

Dion sims- 99.99999% cut in my opinion unless burton and Shaheen are in a car accident.

I don’t know who else is obvious.

Possibilities
Mizzell
Acho

Other reasons

Parkey

Who I would cut:

Sims
Parkey
Mizzell

This gives us $26,387,452 in cap space for 2019.

Helps to put the savings

Allen Robinson $11M
Akeem Hick $5.6M
Charles Leno $6.2M
Kyle Long $5.5M
Danny Trevathan $6.4M
Dion Simms $6M (gone)
Chase Daniel $3M
Sam Acho $2.125M
Sherrick McMannnis $1.7M
Bradley Sowell $1.5M

Everyone else is under $1M, including Mizzell who only saves $645k. Simms is the only one that it way out of line.

Parkey's number goes up if you cut him, $25,262,452 is you cut those 3

I delegated him a "June 1st" cut so the cap hit is spread over two seasons.

Simms and Parkey for sure.

Mizzell, Sowell, and Acho potentially.

Sims. Otherwise, not much.

Yes, any savings is going to come from letting free agents go rather than cuts. And having to cut Parkey basically wiped out any planned savings from Sims.

For cap space Acho. Despite cap space Parkey. Because he's an absolute shithouse earning way to much Sims.
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

Noted Brain Genius Malk, Summer 2018.

(2020 update, wait, was I right...)

Yeah. I think all five of these, and like G08 said, Parkey is a June 1st cut.

I have a feeling all of them are walking if not reasonably priced. Sims is for parkey to wash that out. Massie I think they like Coward to step up or draft pick. Amos is the tougher one as he doesn't seem great at anything but decent at everything. I think he's replaceable with Bush or draft pick. Callahan I'd let test market. His injury history will probably bring his price down and if not Tolliver hopefully steps up. But I think with our draft picks we will see all those positions drafted plus a punter and kicker in UDFA

Sims will be released no doubt. That's $6 mil saved.

Sam Acho could be released now for cap reasons but possibly brought back on a vet minimum deal with a very modest cap cost. Like McMannis you have to believe Pace would prefer replacing them with younger players yet both are productive vets who earn their keep.

Other than that some restructuring of Kyle Long or Kahlil Mack contracts might gain a few million more and with no 1st or 2nd round picks our rookie pool cost will be pretty minor. We aren't in all that bad of shape.

I don't see us as big players in FA so it's really more about creating enough room to re-sign our own guys or replace them.

With Aaron Lynch a FA, I'd think Acho could stay as that would make 2 spots to fill instead of one. And he's cheap at about $2M.

Evaluations.
Grade players via tape.
What was their production level.
Was it hindered or assisted by scheme.
Compare that grade to their cost to keep/cut.

Simms low production in every scheme. And paid well over production level.
Obvious cut. Anyone you bring in even a rookie could match or improve his production at a far lower cost.
If you brought in a FA you most likely increase production for equal cost.

Mizzell is low production but it seems obvious the run blocking & scheme hinder his play.
He is low cost. If scheme & blocking improve so might his production. You might take this opportunity to offer him a long term lost cost contract with escapability. If his production continues to fail you cut him or use him as camp fodder for awhile. If the improved scheme unhinders him and his production jumps you have yourself a high production low cost back. Very least keep Mizzell and fix the blocking & scheme. Also... never ever play low production 4th string back in a damn play-off game.... ever.

I don't see how it's obvious at all that the scheme hinders his play. The tape from the last 2 years (Brett Kollman's specifically) shows out that Howard was a zone blocking guy. Our scheme started out power blocking and got changed to more zone blocking and Howard's effectiveness improved.

We've seen Mizzell run with power blocking (which admittedly wasn't very good) and more zone stuff later on and he's just been ineffective when handed the ball. If you have some tape or other evidence to bring to bear, then we can all take a look. What scheme works with his play?

It appears to me that Nagy likes Mizzell in the passing game--he's good there--and sees him as Cohen's replacement if he goes down. But from where I sit, that guy just isn't an NFL runner.
