Roquan Smith says he talked to Dick Butkus and Otis Wilson at the #Bears 100 celebration. Butkus told Smith "be violent".

“Pretty much Butkus was like, ‘Just be violent. By all means be violent,’” Smith said. “That was his main thing. And pretty much Otis, from the ’85 team, it was more saying the same thing, ‘Get the quarterback, knock him out,’ stuff like that. It was very similar.”

Smith joked that he would probably lose a game check and some of his signing bonus if he played the way the Bears of old did in today’s game.

More per the Athletic:

“Pretty much Butkus was like, ‘Just be violent. By all means be violent,’” Smith said. “That was his main thing. And pretty much Otis, from the ’85 team, it was more saying the same thing, ‘Get the quarterback, knock him out,’ stuff like that. It was very similar.”

Where Butkus, Singletary and Urlacher can really help Roquan is to teach him how to conduct himself as the leader of the defense and as an ambassador of the franchise. (I'm not implying there are issues with Roquan.) The day is coming where Roquan is going to have the keys to this thing. Right now, Trevathan is the guy for the linebackers, but he won't be with the team in a couple years. I understand that we have Mack, Hicks and Jackson, but MLB is supposed to be The Guy.

so Smith's challenge is to accept the "be violent" advice from Mr. Butkus, but to then understand how to incorporate that into today's rules ... because as he himself said, if he plays like Butkus or Wilson, he'd never cash a game check ... Bears would just be sending it straight to the commissioners office

Butkus advice to Smith that wasn't shared...
- Don't let anybody screw your knees up.
- Don't just tackle people, put them in the hospital.
- Spit on the football before the snap
- When WRs come across the middle, knock them unconscious.

:-D
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Go back to leather helmets, NFL.
