The Bears have made their big splash of free agency by agreeing to a five-year, $70 million deal with Cowboys pass rusher Robert Quinn, ESPN reported. That almost certainly means they are releasing outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and getting out of his $13.2 million option for 2020.
Quinn, who turns 30 in May, had 11.5 sacks in a resurgent season with Dallas last year. He had 34 tackles and 22 total quarterback hits (includes sacks).
Floyd, meanwhile, had a career-low three sacks last season and totaled just 18 in four years after Bears general manager Ryan Pace picked him No. 9 overall in 2016.

Floyd also gone. Probably 1:1 trade on the cap hit this year (if not a little better)

Did not see this one coming. Wow. Not really sure how I feel about a 5 year deal for a soon to be 30 year old. He's definitely a better pass rusher than Floyd tho so at least there's that.

Uh...
Uh...
Yeah...
I mean, he's bigger and better, for sure.
But this is going to be expensive and a lot of dead money on the end, again.
This has got to be nearly the end of the money. For anything.

Edge rushers can age gracefully at times. Probably year 4 and 5 are risky, but the guarantee isn't crazy, so that's probably fine.HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:26 am Did not see this one coming. Wow. I'm actually okay with this, despite the risk. The reward payoff is significant.

It all depends on how it’s structured. If it’s essentially a three year deal, then that’s fine.

I mean, he's probably a HOF player. But... what a weird FA.
Bears are clearly pushing their chips in with veteran players to make a run. 30 isn't "old" for a pass rusher, but the is probably only a 2yr deal.
Just weird.

Yep, this is about the same as the Peppers signing. Same age at signing. Got 4 years out of Peppers deal.

In reality, isn't it really just a 2 year $30M contract since that's what is guaranteed? We can cut him after two years if he doesn't produce or we need cap space so I see that as a pretty good value signing. $2.5 more than we would have had to give Floyd.

We will sack the nfl into submission, offense be dammed.
Better than paying Floyd to get “near” the QB.

If in reality its a 2 or 3 year deal i like it alot. I really like Quinn the player. Its the contract i dont like at first glance but im a broken record in that regard this FA. And as others have said the structure will make a huge difference.
Mack and Quinn on opposite sides with Hicks collapsing the middle. Now that sounds amazing!

I absolutely love this. Now offenses will have to pick their poison among Mack, Quinn and Hicks.
Good luck!
Never liked the Floyd pick so I'm good with this... if you want you can spin this as giving "Floyd" a second contract with us, except the player has a shit-ton more production in the league.

I like it.
Takes pressure off cbs and safety spots. Helps Mack.

This. Beats the heck out of the outright baffling Jimmy Graham signing.HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:52 am If in reality its a 2 or 3 year deal i like it alot. Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Yea I agree with this. Didn't see this coming, but happy with it. We're going all in on defense, if Hicks stays healthy even Pagano can't fuck this up - we are going to be dominant again. Seriously, Mack and Quinn rushing outside, with Akiem/Goldman/Nichols or RRH downline? Good friggin luck NFL, we are gonna wreak havoc on NFL QB's. Roquan and Danny cleaning up? DAAAAAAAMN! Bear Down!!The Cooler King wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 11:36 amEdge rushers can age gracefully at times. Floyd is gone and I can stop pretending to like him. I hated the pick and he was a bust relative to his draft position, although not a terrible player by any means. Really hoping Pace has learned to stop reaching for athletic testers.

Quality signing. Easily fits inside the cap as I laid out in an earlier post. With Amukamara, Gabriel and Floyd underperforming for their salary and released we have plenty of cap space. Really, while the specific player was a bit of a surprise, the fact we cleared room and spent money shouldn’t have shocked anyone.
I will kill you if you cut me at the knees. You will drink with me when invited and stay til I say so. We only listen to American Music. I make men nervous with just my presence. I expect an apology if you hold. I throw linemen at QB's. Believe the Lore!

So really, this means we almost have to go CB/OG in the 2nd round and speed WR in the 4th, which the draft is strong in those areas. We still need to sign a safety, back up DT/NT, and swing OT in free agency. Depth from there.

Agreed. I laid out a scenario like this for Clowney at some point. Same idea, Quinn is just a little cheaper than Clowney will probably end up being.Atkins&Rebel wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 12:43 pm . I like the signing as Floyd just couldn't get the job done getting to the QB. However, Quinn definitely plays better as a hands-in-the-dirt end in a 4-3 than an OLB in a 3-4. Hopefully pairing him with Mack will overcome this.
