Some of you are way too caught up in positional labels. I'd wager Quinn will be a down lineman 60-70% of the time.

As in hand in the dirt?

Sure, perhaps. Maybe even near 100% of the time.

But from a teams scheme, hell be playing the "OLB" role. Typically a 7 technique, maybe wider, and at the LOS. As far as switching sides, I honestly can't speak with confidence about how Pagano treated Left/Right or Strong/Weak alignments. Some 3-4s do it differently.

Maybe he'll play some down DE where he's at the 5T spot, but I think those will account for a very small number of snaps.

This thread is exhausting to read. Who the hell cares? Just sack the damn QB and dont be a liability in other areas. He could be called a widdlethumbadoobiedoddle for all I care.

Like I said. The 3-4 looks a lot like a 5-2 about 60% of the time to me and it did when Floyd was playing the position.

Whatever the hell they call it as long as we are smashing the opposing qb we are going to be fine.

Yogi is this basically what your proposing with a 3-4 against a 21 Personnel? Where Quinn is the RDE, and that "Jack" or weak OLB is Mingo or whoever? SAM is Mack.

Or against 22 or 12 personnel

I really want the season to start, I'm so friggin excited for this defense I just can't deal. Friggin NFL season is too short, it's the shortest season of all the pro sports, yet the only one I really give a shit about. If you aren't a playoff team (most aren't) and you don't give a crap about pre-season (no one does), you get Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec. That's it. 4 months on, 8 months off. If you're lucky and make a run, you can add January....big whoop.
Chuck Pagano's defensive rankings in 5 years with Indy: 26th, 20th, 11th, 26th, 30th, and 30th.

With all that's happening in the world, you better prepare yourself for a late-starting, truncated season dplank and the possibility that there might not be a season at all.

   [TE] O O X O O [TE]
That's precisely what I'm talking about. And taking it a step further, with LE being Hicks providing cover for Roquan at MK and WL being DT. And also allowing for Mingo (and I do believe it would be Mingo) and Mack to switch to give different looks. If you watched that Analytic on Mingo, while he struggles with bigger OTs, he's actually pretty effective against TEs and FBs. Can you imagine the LT seeing Quinn and Mack on the same side, "awwww, shit...."

But in order NOT to get bogged down in the labels, I'd like to emphasize several precepts that I've proposed:

  • 1.) We want to rush Mack and Quinn as much as possible.
2.) To do this, Quinn becomes strictly a weakside DE with his hand in the dirt--the only position he's played his entire career.
3.) Except for goal line and short yardage situations, you don't want more than two other defensive lineman playing in the game at the same time as Mack and Quinn, because if you do that and you rush them both, you either blitzing or you're dropping a defensive lineman into coverage. Neither is a positive scenario we want to encourage.
4.) Since Quinn becomes a DE in our system, it elevates the importance of our other OLBs to a substantial degree. I really believe that Mingo was signed as much to be OLB in our regular sets as to be a special teams player. It's the role he played for Pagano in Indy.
5.) We are one scary ass defense. Can't wait for the season.

If there's no NFL, we're all fucked and are all going to have way more problems than there not being an NFL season. Our economy can't survive being shut down for half a year.

You can shut down gatherings of 70k people without shutting down the whole economy.

So obviously they could play in an empty stadium, and there's still plenty of TV money to go around to motivate the owners. At that point it just comes down to how strict guidance gets. A couple weeks ago in many places the recommendation was canceling private events over even 250. So it'd have to get a bit more lax than that, still (once you add up all coaches, players and support staff that just deals with the teams + TV personnel).

One point about shutting down the season. At the least I would think universal testing would be in and only those with the virus during the contagious period would be quarantined.

So it will be:
GO BEARS!

Well, they barely have any tests at this point. Maybe they'll catch up and have a decent stock by fall. Maybe.

But, even then, you can be infected and be contagious without symptoms. And you can't just test every American every couple days, just to be sure.

Cool, I believe there was another graphic showing his pass rush success rate, which was like 2nd or 3rd high in the league and Mack was right up there too.

I have to say, out of all the new offseason additions Quinn is looking to be the best one! Him paired with Mack is going to be a nightmare for O-Coordinators, quarterbacks and O-Lines.

Mack and Quinn collapsing the pocket and forcing the QB to step up and meet Hicks is going to be fun to watch.

Just listened to Quinn's press conference. Have to say... He made up his mind to sign with Chicago before before he found out he was playing for Chuck Pagano? Really? After he just said he had to consider the players and coaches when making his decision? Really?

Hmmm.... Doesn't sound like he's the sharpest tack in the drawer. Not that an edge rush guy needs to be Rhodes Scholar or anything.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Go back to leather helmets, NFL.
