The real oddity is that Pace gave out a contract that didn't have a low-cost out in the third year. It's not like him. Normally the guarantees are mostly paid by the end of the second year and in some cases by the end of first. It's allowed him to get rid of other misses relatively cheaply.

Burton was a sought after player at a position of great need for us when we signed him. Pace has been able to do this frequently, but only when he can get away with it.
Burton will go down as one of my most hated Bears players ever. He pussed out of the biggest game in a decade for us, and I still think if he had played that we would have won that game. And he basically hasn't played since, costing us dearly last season. He got paid butt loads of money just to fuck us over, and he still is! He takes a league minimum deal because he's still getting 4M from us to play in Indy which reduces our offset to almost nothing.
He'll probably light it up in Indy. Fuck that guy.

Good to see you!
Why's that?
The only thing that really consistently gets to me is when people reflexively defend anything the organization does, because they want to believe and you're a traitor if you haven't downed as much Kool Aid as they have.

Hehe... so much for smoke screens, huh? I don't know if Pace is a good poker player or a bad one.dplank wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 11:38 amFor you smoke screen lovers...maybe Pace is pulling a 3D chess move here and is showing a need at TE heading into the draft as a smoke screen to....wait for it.....surprise everyone by taking Jalen Hurts.Moriarty wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 9:51 am This timing is really baffling.
Why do it right before the draft and tip your hand on needs???
Even if you're planning on making some sort of signing, it still doesn't make sense. You can't use up every dollar of cap space - you have to have some cushion. Make this other signing, then cut Burton after the draft.
Hard to not like the pick!

Haha yea, someone else said it best, people think way too deep when the most obvious answer is usually the right one. I don’t believe in smoke screen theory, and yea I like the picks, both of them.

Seems like Trey was 4 months into a 6 month rehab
From Mike Wells on Twitter
New Colts TE Trey Burton with an interesting tidbit. He said he was misdiagnosed w/an injury before 2019 season. Had extensive surgery and feels like he rushed back instead of taking time to return. Said he's on month 4 of 6 month recovery from hip surgery in December.

Ideally, why not?
However, there may have been some serious bad blood and/or loss of trust (in both directions) after the way 2019 was (mis)handled, and possibly the relationship was just too damaged to be workable any more.

Completely plausible.
Doesn't exactly scream good for Pace even if true though (and even if that's true - WHY now? Why not right before FA or right after you have Graham locked up?)

Sure. The timing is still off, no matter what.
Just pointing out why "give him a chance in preseason" might not make sense.

I like Burton a lot and was bummed we gave up on him, but it kind of looks like he's firmly in the kevin white phase of his career.

the armchair doctor in me would assume he did the old "creating a new injury while compensating for a previous injury" thing that can be a never ending cycle for some players. really sucks.

Burton was a massive overpay by Pace, there was only flimsy evidence that he could expand his game into a central receiving threat, and it’s not like he had overwhelming physical attributes either to justify the reach. All GMs have misses, this is one of Pace’s bigger misses IMO.
