There has been different chatter here about Foles as a vet or bringing in someone else. So I pulled up his contract here https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bea ... oles-9898/ and I think I understand what it's saying but was hoping someone could correct me if I'm wrong.
According to that site, he has a dead cap number of $14 million!!!!! I assume that is the number if we simply cut him. This year's salary, next year's salary and roster bonus are all $4 million (so $12 total) plus this year's and next year's signing bonus each count about $2.6 million and he get $1 million of his '23 salary which comes to $18 million less this years salary of $4 million which gets you to $14 million.
But I would think if he is traded the only thing we are on the hook for is the '21 and '22 signing bonus. The other team would pay the remaining salary and next year's roster bonus, right? So if we trade him it would be $5.2 million of signing bonus but we save $4 million in salary so he would just be $1.2 million in dead money.
Am I missing something???? If that $14 million hits us regardless there is no freaking way we can move on from him.

You got it right, that dead money acceleration makes it near impossible to move him for us. The good news is his cap hit this year is pretty small, high end backup money. He has value as a backup QB and even a bridge starter if we end up going the draft route.

That is if you cut him, if you trade him the new team has to pay for everything aside from the signing bonus. which was only $8M. $5.3M left would be the dead cap hit if you trade him (good luck with that).

Basically, he’s got 1 year left with us. His cap hit this year will he just under 7 mill which is not bad. He’s a perfect backup/bridge QB.
That said, I think he has some value out there. There are guys who had success with him in the past that are now Head Coaches and OCs...Don’t be shocked to see him moved for a late round pick which would clear most of his money from our books.

So we can trade him in theory (assuming someone wants him and his contract) without totally crippling our cap, but no way in hell is he simply getting cut.

Hmmm spotrac and OTC seem to disagree on that 2022 roster bonus. So OTC does not show it in their dead cap. I suppose it matters when it becomes/became guaranteed. Potentially impacts the ability to cut him in 2022 as well.

I will kill you if you cut me at the knees. You will drink with me when invited and stay til I say so. We only listen to American Music. I make men nervous with just my presence. I expect an apology if you hold. I throw linemen at QB's. Believe the Lore!

If Foles is traded, does that assume we keep Mitch around? What would be his salary/cap impact? Could the Bears find a better backup than Foles for $7M?
So many questions, so many months for Pace to figure it out. I would like to see Foles in an offense called by Lazor that was a little better suited to his talents, with a line that was a bit more effective blocking than the krep we saw in the middle of the season when he was thrust into the starting lineup. A full offseason of training and working in the Lazor offense could yield dividends with Foles, particularly if he's needed to give a rookie some time to get acclimated.
Maybe we wouldn't hear him muttering about not having time to run the play that was called.

San Francisco has always been my favorite booing city. I don't mean the people boo louder or longer, but there is a very special intimacy. Music, that's what it is to me. One time in Kezar Stadium they gave me a standing boo.

When is his opt in/out date? I believe he has an opt out in his contract.

He has to meet certain performance metrics to opt out, which I'm guessing he failed to do.southdakbearfan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 12:42 am When is his opt in/out date? I believe he has an opt out in his contract.
