Here we go again. These stupid fucks haven’t learned anything over the years.

It’s simple: you hire a new GM first and then the new GM hires the coach. The new coach puts together his own coaching staff. Everyone stays in their lane and everyone is 100% accountable.

This is the same stupid shit that made Jim Finks resign in the 1980’s.

McCaskey and Phillips have to be products of inbreeding. Incompetence at its finest.
This is literally what George said is his preferred structure.

George did specifically say that he'd prefer to hire the GM 1st but, in classic double talk "just in case", he didn't want to delay the coaching search while they hire the GM and didn't want to turn away someone whom they believe (THIS is beyond fair to question, lampoon) is the right coach.

As for Jim Finks, he resigned because, after his disastrous Neil Armstrong hire failed miserably, he lost his power when George Halas hired Mike Ditka. Finks was an excellent judge of talent at all but one position - Quarterback, where made Ryan Pace and Jerry Angelo look like Bill Walsh - and wasn't particularly astute when it came hiring head coaches.

I get the reaction - we've been here, we've done this - but IMO every organization, including the Bears in the past, gets lucky once in awhile.

Harbaugh and McDaniels want to be in on the GM choice. I don't know if it's a deal breaker with them.

I don’t want this to take a cultural/political turn, but Frazier does satisfy the Rooney Rule. If they had a deal in place already with a guy like Harbaugh, they wouldn’t be able to move forward without following diversity rules.

IMO, the Bears have nothing in place with Harbaugh (or Ryan Day). I think they're taking Frazier's candidacy seriously - while fans like us would loath the hire, SUPPOSEDLY, he has a strong league-wide reputation in addition to being a former Bear, an African American and a Tony Dungy disciple.

My concern with Frazier would be a. his age - I believe he's 63 and b. what his plan for an OC will be. The defense likely would be in better hands with him/whomever he tabbed to be a DC than it is today with Sean Desai. It's the offense that would concern me.

Is it still the case that Frazier can’t interview until the Bills are out of the playoffs or am I remembering wrong?

No I think he can still interview but the Bills can refuse him permission if they’re so inclined

I'm sailing in a different boat. After what we've had, ANYONE will be inspiring to me when we hire them. Sadly I fear that will fade once we are back on the field - because the same bozo still has the final say in who gets the job.

I think they may be semi serious about Frazier, but they are also satisfying the Rooney rule here and getting that essentially out of the way. If they want Harbaugh, they have to satisfy this first so doing it early in the process makes sense to me. That way if they think they have a deal with Harbaugh they can jump on it.

I kinda think the same thing.

And that's okay -- Frazier might do what Mike Tomlin did -- completely blow them away in the interview and give them another option to seriously consider.

He might, and while I'm not super excited about Frazier I could convince myself it'll work out - I always do lol...I even managed to convince myself that Trestman was going to be good, and that was probably the most upset I've ever been by a coaching hire when they announced it.

I never bought in to the Trestmolester and I won't be happy with Frazier either.

That is, unless top tier candidates just refuse to interview with us.

Lest we forget:

Frazier's tenure was marked by an inability to develop a quarterback. This season, he struggled just to choose between Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman. Even more damning: Frazier's defense badly declined in 2013, giving up more points than any team in football.
We have seen this show before.
Look, Fields is a heck of a better prospect than those 3, but he certainly hasn't proven any ability to develop a QB up to now. Seems like a factor.

Plus the defensive decline?

I give him a pass on the QB spot. Could anyone have done something with that hand? It's like me when I play hold 'em and get dealt a 2 8 off suit.

Scouting is a team effort and there's a lot of it in every building, plus it will never be an exact science. I really hope our next GM is more focused on how to get the most out of a roster and how coaching can influence that.
Not me. The GM is ultimately the guy who pulls the trigger on draft day and when evaluating FA talent. He’d better have a damn good eye for on field talent. Certainly I want him to evaluate coaching talent as well, but once the coaching staff has been chosen, getting the most out of the existing roster is their job. And if you have chosen legitimate coaching staff, the GM needs to fuck off and stay in his lane.

I love the way the Colts have built their team over the past number of years. Very intrigued by Morocco Brown. Also interested in a Dusty Mauve with white trim…but that is a conversation for another time.
Plus, unless you hire a retread I don’t know how you can evaluate a candidate’s ability to maximize a roster or evaluate coaching candidates.

He was a D1 college football player that apparently had a lot to do with identifying the offensive lineman they drafted. So that ability to evaluate talent and philosophy on building the roster would be encouraging. Plus, from his resume it looks like he has worked on both the pro and college side of personnel which I think is also a positive.

In addition to being a Princeton grad he’s apparently got a background in analytics which is interesting. Might be too smart for the McCaskey’s though. lol

Coach & GM Hiring

by southdakbearfan
So I see all these interviews, but if you are the Bears don't you want the GM in place to do interviews before you start Head Coach Interviews otherwise you run the risk of a bad match between coach and GM?

Or do you hire the coach and let him select the GM to be a Trend Setting Franchise?

Or hire them both separately, put them in a padded room, and tell them to work out a football roster/identity philosophy by morning?

Some coaching candidates would want a say in who the GM is. I think the Bears are trying to lure Harbaugh and McDaniels to at least interview and say here's some leg work on GM's...and vice versa, they can still hire a GM and say here's some leg work on some of the coaches that were available to interview before playoffs got under way

At the rate they're going, George, Ted, Bill, the Diversity & Inclusion Officer and the other one are going to interview every assistant GM, VP of player personnel, VP of college scouting and co-ordinator in the league plus every former executive turned TV pundit and currently unemployed former head coach too!

Give me the nerds.

Seriously though this early GM list has me a little uncomfortable with how green the candidates look. Maybe it's overcompensation from Pace's failure, but I worry a bit about the young wunderkind approach and a guy not being fully prepared for the entire operation wiht the support George can give.

But at the same time, give me the nerds.
