On July 10,1966 I was at Soldier Field to hear Martin Luther King speak. It was my second trip to the Field. In '64 I attended the College All-Star game which always pitted the all-stars against the NFL champs (who were not permitted to use zone defenses in the game).

MLK was an amazing man, an amazing minister and an amazing American. Every year when we celebrate his Birthday, I am always reminded of the words of the poet, Carl Wendell Hines ...

Now that he is safely dead,
Let us Praise him.
Build monuments to his glory.
Sing Hosannas to his name.

Dead men make such convenient Heroes.
They cannot rise to challenge the images
We would fashion from their Lives.
It is easier to build monuments
Than to make a better world.

So now that he is safely dead,
We, with eased consciences, will
Teach our children that he was a great man,
Knowing that the cause for which he
Lived is still a cause
And the dream for which he died
Is still a dream.
“Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego falls with it.”
