Chicago Bears: Looking at the Bears 2010 Roster

By Bryan Dietzler (Bears Featured Columnist) on September 9, 2010 0

Final cuts are in and the Bears 53 man roster for the 2010 season has been set. There won’t be too many new faces in new places as we look at this roster so things will remain close to being the same as they were last year. Granted, there will be three very new and very important faces on the team this season, defensive end Julius Peppers, running back Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna and hopefully these guys will help the Bears out this season and beyond.

Let’s take a look at the 53 players that the Bears have on their roster and whether or not they help make their position group solid overall or will the group be a problem for the Bears this season.
Note: Each player is listed in depth chart order.

Quarterbacks: Jay Cutler, Caleb Hanie/Todd Collins

The Bears list both Hanie and Collins as the number two quarterback but you can bet Collins may get the nod over Hanie if something were to happen to Cutler. Let’s just hope that nothing happens to Cutler.

Running Backs: Matt Forte, Chester Taylor, Kahlil Bell and Garret Wolfe

The Bears will be pretty solid with Forte and Taylor leading them in the running game. Hopefully Forte can stay healthy and help the Bears on the ground. Taylor will be a valuable asset on offense catching the ball out of the backfield and running it on third downs. The other nice thing that he can do is block. Bell and Wolfe will be there to back them up and play on special teams.

H-Back-Desmond Clark

Clark may be getting older but he’s still one of the better offensive players on the team. Having him as an H-Back should help the Bears offense out and allow him to keep his career in Chicago.

Tight Ends-Greg Olsen, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kellen Davis

The Bears will use Olsen more as a pass catcher than anything else because of his problems blocking. Look for Manumaleuna to play a lot during the season as the Bears will need his size and blocking skills.

Guards-Roberto Garza/Lance Louis, Johan Asiata

As you can see, the Bears don’t have a lot of depth at the guard position and are one injury away from having some serious problems at the position.

Tackles-Chris Williams/Frank Omiyale, Kevin Shaffer, J’Marcus Webb
Once again, there is a glaring lack of depth at the tackle position and if Williams keeps playing like he did in the preseason, the Bears don’t have anyone to come in and replace him. Let’s hope that this unit stays completely healthy during the season and can perform very well.

Center-Olin Kreutz

There is no backup to Kreutz this season. In case of an emergency, Roberto Garza could play center but then who plays at Garza’s guard spot? Not having another center is clearly a big risk by the Bears.

Wide Receiver-Johnny Knox/Devin Hester, Rashied Davis, Devin Aromashodu, Earl Bennett

The Bears decided to keep just five wide receivers on the team so hopes are high that no one will get injured. If they do suffer an injury, they could easily call Juaquin Iglesias up from the practice squad. Bennett being a fourth stringer is kind of an odd thing after his success last year but after missing almost all of the preseason with an injury, he has to work his way back into a role similar to what he had in 2009.

Defensive Ends-Julius Peppers/Mark Anderson/Israel Idonije, Cory Wootton.

The Bears now have one of the best pass rushers at the defensive end position and hopefully his presence allows others to make plays on the defensive line. It will be interesting to see how well Anderson does this season. We will soon find out if it was a mistake to let Alex Brown go and Adewale Ogunleye to walk.

Defensive Tackles-Tommie Harris/Anthony Adams, Marcus Harrison, Henry Melton, Matt Toeaina

This needs to be a season of redemption for Harris who has underachieved for the past three years. Adams finally gets his due by being named a starter and as long as these guys can stay healthy, they should have a pretty good season.

Strong Side Linebacker-Pisa Tinoisamoa/Nick Roach

The Bears list both as starters but it’s a lock that Tinoisamoa starts the season as the true starter at the strong side linebacker position. If he does get hurt (which he did last year) then Roach will be there to back him up as a very solid second option.

Middle Linebacker-Brian Urlacher, Hunter Hillenmeyer

Urlacher is back and ready to go and hopefully will make it through the season. If he doesn’t, the Bears have a very capable backup with Hunter Hillenmeyer.

Weak Side Linebacker-Lance Briggs, Brian Iwuh

Iwuh beat out Tim Shaw for a spot on the team and will earn it as a backup to Briggs on the weak side.
Left Cornerback-Zachary Bowman, Corey Graham, Joshua Moore

The Bears switched Bowman and Tillman around this offseason and hopefully this change works out well for the Bears. Bowman has shown some flashes of ability in the past and hopefully, in his second full season as a starter, he will be able to step up and play much better.

Right Cornerback-Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings, D.J. Moore

Tillman, as mentioned, has been switched to the right cornerback spot so hopefully this works out well. Moore will get a chance to play the nickel back this season which should be pretty interesting.

Strong Safety-Danieal Manning, Craig Steltz

Manning gets the start but how long will he be there? Will there be additional instability at the safety position this season? The Bears can’t afford that.

Free Safety-Chris Harris, Josh Bullocks, Major Wright

Just how long will it take for Wright to start? The Bears might have to move Harris closer to the line where he plays better and give Wright a shot. Expect a change by the fourth game of the season.

Kicker-Robbie Gould

Gould struggled a little bit in preseason but should be back to his old normal self by the time the Bears hit the field against the Detroit Lions in their first game of the year. Look for an excellent season out of Gould.

Punter-Brad Maynard

Maynard had some punts blocked during the preseason but they weren’t his fault. Expect another good season out of Maynard in 2010.

Long Snapper-Patrick Mannelly, Desmond Clark

Mannelly has been a mainstay at the position and the Bears love having him there especially after the problems they had when he was out for a short amount of time this preseason.

Kick Off Returns-Johnny Knox/Danieal Manning

Both of these guys are solid options returning kicks and should make the Bear’s return teams some of the best in the NFL this season.

Punt Returns-Devin Hester, Earl Bennett

Hopefully Hester can find the same magic that he had a long time ago and return a few punts this season. As long as he’s healthy, Bennett is a solid second option.
