2-minute drill

November 5, 2008

Keep an eye on the midseason reports, and you'll see that Bears quarterback Kyle Orton is being called one of the most surprising players in the NFL and one of the most improved. Could that translate into a Pro Bowl appearance? It will depend on injury, not just to Orton but to players who have put up significantly better numbers, such as Drew Brees, Kurt Warner and Donovan McNabb. You have to figure Jason Campbell, Aaron Rodgers and Jake Delhomme also will get plenty of votes. Rodgers has done a nice job of playing through a shoulder injury while earning a big-money deal. Orton can establish an iron-man rep of his own if he can recover quickly from his ankle problem.

LOST AMID THE STORIES about the terrible turf at Soldier Field on Sunday was the performance of Robbie Gould, who kicked field goals of 36 and 41 yards. Gould has converted 15 of 17 field goals, and with the next one he will be recognized as one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. A kicker must make 100 field goals to get on the list, and Gould is 99-for-116 for his career. His 85.3 percentage will land him at No. 4 on the all-time accuracy list behind Mike Vanderjagt (89.5), Nate Keading (86.2) and Shayne Graham (85.8). Keading, a third-round selection by San Diego, is the only one of the four to have been drafted into the NFL. Speaking of Gould, he has made the end zone on 20 of his 46 kickoffs this year after doing so just 11 times on 76 kickoffs last season. His six touchbacks already has doubled last season's total.
