The Bears have released veteran guard Terrence Metcalf.
A third-round draft pick by Jerry Angelo in 2002, Metcalf made 25 career starts with the Bears.
He was expected to be the starting left guard last season until arthroscopic knee surgery in training camp sidelined him. Then, he was suspended for four games for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.
Metcalf became expendable when the team signed Frank Omiyale at the start of free agency. The Bears also have veteran Dan Buenning for depth.

I can't believe this guy was able to stick on the roster as long as he did.

Metcalf was a huge disappointment in my opinion. I thought they got something solid when they drafted him, but he has simply never lived up to even modest expectations.
The fact he lasted 7 years as an underachieving schlub shows you all you need to know about the Bears "braintrusts" at Halas Hall.

What this reinforces is that the Bears have been terrible at developing talent. Their ratio with developing draft picks into starters, particularly on the offensive line and at wide receiver, has been absolutely terrible. When you want to indite the coaching staff here is the smoking gun. To be a consistent NFL team you have to get good mileage out of your draft picks, particularly the mid rounders, the salary cap makes it very difficult to buy a team in free agency. The Bears have really been consistently bad at this for years now.
