Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery to relieve symptoms associated with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), according to multiple reports citing his agent. The Mets righthander should be available by spring training 2017 barring any complications after the surgery.
Sandy Alderson said Thursday that he believed surgery was inevitable, but that Harvey also could have had a temporary treatment, a nerve block injection, and tried to pitch through it this season. The Mets GM, however, indicated that would not be a permanent solution and delaying the surgery would endanger Harvey’s start to the 2017 season.
So it is hardly surprising the 27-year old, who has struggled all season, would opt for surgery now.
TOS is a rare constriction of the nerves and blood vessels from the neck to the shoulder. It can be caused by muscle build up and over-use.
