Speculation: Bears asking after WR John Ross

If I remember correctly from Rotoworld, he's tearing it up in the AAF and that is what is getting him new looks for the NFL.Otis Day wrote:21 receptions in 2 years for 210 yds and 7 TDS. Nothing really screams to me, "GOTTA HAVE." 1 of 3 receptions for TDs, sure, but Gabriel and Cohen are this guy.

Guy is super fast, just not a real good receiver.

So, he played a little more RB than WR this past season...and he ran the ball a bit at Washington. I wonder if the Bears would consider him more of a replacement for Mizzell than an actual WR. Sort of how Nagy used De'Anthony Thomas mostly out of the backfield in KC.

That'd be Rashad Ross maybe?Buffaloaf wrote:If I remember correctly from Rotoworld, he's tearing it up in the AAF and that is what is getting him new looks for the NFL.Otis Day wrote:21 receptions in 2 years for 210 yds and 7 TDS. Who knows what harebrained scheme Nagy is cooking up? He seems like the kind of guy that wants to change constantly and keep defenses on their heels. It's a really nice feeling to have trust that whatever he's doing, it's going to be fun to watch.

Yeah, I always thought Ross was a better runner than receiver. I don't think that translates to a full on position change, but definitely a weapon that Nagy could use in a variety of ways out of the backfield and out wide.
If it doesn't cost much, I'd be down just to see what they do with him.

IMO, this team doesn’t need another receiver with the same skill sets as the 3 we already have in Miller, Gabriel and Cohen. The bears don’t have much draft capital nor much cap room. IMO, spending any capital on another reciever is not a priority. With Long’s restructuring, the entire starting offense is ready to go for next season. Completing the defense should be Pace’ priority not some flashy situational receiver. I’ll pass!

Totally agree. Work and develop what we have on offense.
Why are we even using a marginal talent such as Mizzell when we have Cohen and Howard anyways? It really irks me to see him steal playing time over those two. Makes no sense to me.

It should make sense. Nagy's offense is built on movement, motion, and running plays out of unconventional formations. Basically unpredictability.ramentaschen wrote:Totally agree. Work and develop what we have on offense.

When Howard is on the field, it limits Nagy's ability to be unpredictable and limits the playbook because he can't do the same things Cohen (and theoretically Mizzell) can.
That's not a slight on Howard, it's just a reality of the Bears offense now.

I'm all for it if he's an upgrade over "Smoke". Never stop upgrading Pace.

But he’s not, plus he’s only started 11 games. AR is the bears true #1, he can do it all. Trubisky found that out late in the season and when he was in trouble that’s who he went to, which is a great choice. IMO, the bears need more variety at the WR position and Wimms is the perfect receiver to fit that bill.

But he wouldn't be a true WR with the Bears. He would replace Mizzell. He would be used like De'Anthony Thomas.Funkster wrote:AZ_Bearfan wrote:I'm all for it if he's an upgrade over "Smoke". Never stop upgrading Pace.

We're light on resources, so Pace should be turning over every rock looking for usable pieces and upgrades. I don't think its a terrible idea at all to find another Tarik Cohen like player. As wab said, this offense is heavily about movement skills and that's why we had a meh guy like Mizzell on the roster in the first place. And we will have 2 big WRs with ARob and Wims, so it's not like we sorely lack in that skill set.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".
Go back to leather helmets, NFL.

I got that but why use a draft pick (some rumors saying it’ll take a 3rd) and cap just to replace a 3rd down back? Howard could easily fill that roll if allowed. What sense does signing another shifty speed receiver or 3rd down back really make?wab wrote:But he wouldn't be a true WR with the Bears. He would replace Mizzell. He would have to learn how to actually catch to be receiver/running back out of the backfield type player. For what he has shown his only real potential might be as a returner and the value on those is getting less and less every season.
He has a 25% drop rate on catch-able balls, so sign me up for no thanks. There is a reason as a first round pick why you don't see the field and that reason is you are bad at football. How many bad first rounders do we see trotted out there on many different teams just because they are first rounders. This guy was bad enough they basically didn't bother to do that most of his 2 seasons. The bengals may be the bungals, but they have actually developed a lot of WR's over the past in Lewis's coaching tenure so I highly doubt it is coaching. And, I get it, he is fast as hell, and speed is very alluring, but speed ain't worth shit when you have to catch the ball first prior to showing that speed and you can't do that reliably. Troy Williamson 2.0
I also highly doubt they are going to get anywhere near a 3rd for him, maybe a 6th, maybe, if he isn't flat out cut.

He would have to be a conditional 7th round pick for me - nothing more than that. For a guy that might be situational RB versus a WR - a sort of gadget type player - if I was Pace, I wouldn't spend more draft capital than that. And when I say conditional, I mean, we offer one of our 2019 7th rounders and if he doesn't meet some playing time or productivity requirements, the Bengals would give us their 7th rounder in 2020.

For all we know it went like this;
Pace- you wanna trade us John Ross for a conditional 7th?
Cinci- how about a 3rd
Pace- {that meme of them laughing from Goodfellas} *click*

Yeah, he's not worth a 3rd. He's worth a conditional pick.

No matter what you give for him in a trade, you're still going to have to pick up his first round salary. That's $2M this year and $2.7M in 2020. I don't think his production to date warrants that investment, and obviously the Bengals don't either.
If they cut him and we can get him on the cheap, sure. But not at that price.

2M is nothing for a WR, about as close to a minimum salary as you can find for a player with any upside potential at all, let alone a former high 1st round pick.
I don't know if he can turn it around or not, but he's interesting at that price.

The fact that the Bengals are willing to take a $4M cap hit for him NOT to be on their team may say something about his upside potential.dplank wrote:2M is nothing for a WR, about as close to a minimum salary as you can find for a player with any upside potential at all, let alone a former high 1st round pick.

Sure, but your point about the contract cost was just a bad take IMO.
Josh Bellamy made 2M last year. That's bottom barrel salary cap cost for a WR. That doesn't mean I want Ross, I know very little about him. And I wouldn't trade any picks for him, so that kills it right there. But 2M salary shouldn't scare anyone away, that part is a non factor.

I feel contract cost is a very valid point. The bears already have 66 million wrapped up through 2020 in AR, Gabriel and Miller. Add in the cost and the trade value and this isn’t close to a necessity for the bears right now. Safety, nickel, edge depth and guard are positions of need. Again, every dime and draft pick should be spent filing holes, they’re in win now mode.

I think the point was that no matter what they are going to have a receiver on the roster making $2 million. What does it matter if it's Ross or someone else? So the 2 million is a wash.

The dude has 4.22 speed. Something that cannot be taught. Everything else can. They can take a flyer on him, pay very little, and have a ton of upside.

4.22 track speed. Of the top 10 - 40 times in combine history, 8 are complete busts, he would be the 9th.Bears Whiskey Nut wrote:The dude has 4.22 speed. Something that cannot be taught. Everything else can. They can take a flyer on him, pay very little, and have a ton of upside.
40 time is the most overblown, overhyped, stupid metric they have. Now if they ran a 40 in full gear it might mean a little bit more.
And, I will go back once again to it doesn't really matter how freaking fast you can run if you are bad at football. He is bad at football at the nfl level. Him being on the market is akin to us having White on the market last season trying to recoup something from a blown pick.

Kevin White "Lite" and just what we don't need another of at WR unless our prime reason for looking is as a KR in which case we may offer a 7th round conditional pick and no more. That would be my approach.southdakbearfan wrote:Guy is super fast, just not a real good receiver.
