@MikeGarafolo

#Bears are signing former #Jets CB Buster Skrine, sources tell me and @PSchrags. Surely means Bryce Callahan is gone from Chicago

@RapSheet
17m

It’s a 3-year deal worth $16.5M with $8.5M guaranteed, source said.

Bye Bye Callahan. Just seems like the Bears weren't sold on Callahan's medicals to pay him top money (sort of like the Cam Meredith situation last year). Skrine is an okay player, a downgrade but you can't keep the entire defense together - guys are going to get paid.

He’s played more safety in New York, so hopefully playing exclusively at nickelback, he’ll revert back to Cleveland Buster.

Ok with it, depth signing. Decent tackler with some ball skills.

This one makes some sense. I’m not mad at this signing. Would much rather see him than McManis take over for Callahan. The bears missed on Frenchy, I’m hoping they didn’t miss on Callahan too. I hope you’re right Nagy. We’re trusting you and Pace!

I’m so used to the bears being active in free agency. My buddy (Seahawks fan) kept reminding me good teams aren’t active in free agency. I’m like, I know, I know man!

Not really a fan of Skrine although Nagy seems to love him and his metrics aren't much different than Callahan's.

1And now to look at Buster Skrine. According to @TheQuantEdge, teams had a passer rating of 113.3 throwing at him in 2018. Completed 63% of passes, averaged 7.4 yards/target, and had 5 TD/0 INT. He also picked up 7 penalties, which was just short of Amukamara's amount.

The completion percentage and yards/target numbers are actually pretty decent. For comparison, teams throwing at Callahan last year completed 67% of passes for 8.4 yards/target. So Skrine was better in both areas. Yards/target comparable to Fuller (7.2) as best Bears starter

So the TD/INT ratio skews the passer rating a good bit. Skrine was at 7.2 yards/target in 2017 and 6.9 in 2016, so consistently solid in coverage. He doesn't get many INTs (9 in 8 years, only 1 year with more than 1), but neither did Callahan.

So Skrine is decent in coverage but doesn't make many plays. He's about to turn 30 in April, so not a long-term solution, but I like this signing. He's also stepping into a perfect situation in terms of playing with a great front 7 and awesome safety behind you in EJax.

There's some insane deals being handed out to few top players and despite his injuries obviously Callahan feel like he's gonna cash in. Pace budget probably maxed out in the $9-$10 mil range for guaranteed money and Callahan is priced above that. We were hoping for the best but our odds were never that great once Tavon Young got his deal.

So we need to redraft the position and for now Skrine brings some vet experience on what's more than likely an "out after two years" deal. Best thing I can think of is it's who we could afford.

I read the contract is basically a 2 year contract. That contract structure was probably important as well because that's when Trubisky, Jackson, and Cohen get expensive.

One thing I like about Skrine is he can play outside CB, as well as Safety in packages, so he brings some versatility.

I dunno guys but paying this kind of money for the 87th best CB or something doesn't sound like a great idea.

Sometimes your ranked a certain way based on how you were used and the scheme. Maybe Pace sees metrics or some body of work etc that makes him feel he can be plugged into the slot.

At this point Pace has earned benefit of the doubt

Was he playing behind as good a front 7 as he will be now? The front 7 makes all the difference in the world. pace knows what the hell he is doing.

My understanding is the Jets started playing him at safety more last year but he wasn’t good at it, but he’s better in the slot. I have no idea where I read that or if it’s true or not, but I picked it up somewhere.
