Kelechi Osemele's trip for surgery is unexcused absence

New York Jets guard Kelechi Osemele, who is engaged in an injury dispute with the organization, didn't show up Friday to the team facility -- and it was deemed an unexcused absence by the Jets, a source said.

Osemele was in Boston to have surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, according to his agent, Andrew Kessler. The procedure wasn't authorized by the Jets, who have since listed Osemele as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The surgery didn't come as a surprise, as Osemele indicated Wednesday that he was planning to have it whether or not he received authorization.

The Jets continue to fine him for conduct detrimental to the team. Osemele said he's being fined the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. In his case, that's $579,000 per week, the amount of his game checks.

The two sides agreed that Osemele had a torn labrum, but they disagreed on when he should have the surgery. The Jets believed he could play through the injury, a source said. Osemele said he was in too much pain and needed immediate surgery.

On Wednesday, Osemele posted on social media a note from his third-opinion doctor, stating he needed surgery to repair a posterior/inferior labral tear and remove a large cyst. The doctor, Glen Ross, performed the arthroscopy.

so it seems the NFL only harps about player safety when it is to their advantage but chooses to be invisible when an actual item of player safety concern comes to the front

here is a guy who has a legitimate injury ... everyone agrees about that ... but the team doctors say he can play just fine if they drug him up and fit him with a brace ... the player's second opinion doctor agreed with the player that for his long term good, he needed the surgery now

and the team, probably pissed he went to get a second opinion, refused to approve the surgery which means they can fine him for unexcused absence while he is away from the team being treated

this is a very f'd up situation created by the Jets

Offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele, who on Friday underwent shoulder surgery, was released by the Jets on Saturday, the team announced.

Osemele's surgery and whether it was needed was a point of contention between the lineman and the New York training staff. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who reported the surgery went well on Friday, added after the release that the move comes in lieu of the Jets placing Osemele on injured reserve and that "grievances will follow."

Osemele was in his first season in New York after three years with the Raiders, two of which ended with Pro Bowl selections.
Presumably players take note of issues like this. Given a choice of teams, would you want to sign with the Jets if this is how they treat players?

For all the issues the Bears have right now, and all the criticism the McCaskey's get , they have done right by players including the likes of Johnny Knox and Zach Miller.

Also, he’s injured but he’s a guard and he doesn’t suck. Try to bring him in for when he’s healthy, even if it’s next season?

You'll have to pardon me, but I'm kind of over 30 year old injured guards.

Hard to argue, but we have limited draft capital and it could potentially buy us a year until we need to spend a high pick on a guard.

I think Coward played pretty well though. I'm more inclined to hold onto him and look for a LT instead.

Outside of cowards penalties IDR him being a liability. Keep playing him as he's Massies replacement IMO and Bars will be our RG. We do need to find a LT though. Then hopefully can find some late round development guys.

Yeah, I think Coward played pretty well considering he was a practice squad DT 18 months ago.
