In some ways, that's a weird thing to look down at. "He was Nervous", during the biggest interview of his life.

I get why that is a worry. If true, anxiety, and mental make y up are worries. It's clearly not normal or worse then normal.

However it could mean he really wants it, and will work his Ass off. I know the top level athletes all have top level egos. He was the big fish in a small pond, he is in the ocean surrounded by big fish. I hope it works out for him.

Ok, so I watched a couple complete games.

Guys a wrecking ball..I mean..WRECKING BALL.

He plays a little wild at times and definitely stays a little too upright, but man he's strong and hard to block one on one.

He's a bit of a project, I just don't know if I could take him at 8
Two words jumped out at me when I watched that video. Texas State. Yes, he was a "wrecking ball". But I'd need to see him play against more potential NFL players before I'd draft him in R1.
Here is Davenport in 2016 against Texas A & M, ranked #20 in the country at the time.

Great discipline showed on a reverse...

REVERSE

Powerful punch incapacitates the RT, then gets a hit on the QB...

PUNCH

Really nice job of shedding the block to catch the RB...

SHED

Drives the TE right into the running lane...

LANE

Great catch up speed to tackle the QB, saves a big gain...

CLOSING SPEED

Manhandles the OT and gets the sack...

SACK

Tackled by the OT, drawing a holding penalty..

HOLDING

Also used in coverage for 7 snaps...

COVERAGE

Texas A & M starts double teaming him after halftime...

DOUBLE TEAM

3rd down and 11, and most edge rushers are going to sell out to get to the QB. Instead, Davenport reads this play perfectly. Great maturity...

READ

Puts an incredible move on the blocker, causing him to whiff completely. Then he sheds another block on his way to the RB...

FAKE

Makes the RT his bitch on this play, driving him back 5 yards...

BULL RUSH

Run away from Davenport, but he still catches the RB from the backside...

BACKSIDE
Well played. My view is moving.

Davenport is a completely different animal. Speed to power/bull rush is his best move. Question is, does he have a counter and how will that work against NFL talent? This isn't Conference USA anymore, ya know?

Couldn't you if you wanted to make a case for every player in the first round if you go looking for all that was good? I know he has some moments but as of right now and even after the senior bowl the scouts came away with a 2 to 3 year window for this kid to start showing dividends.

^ Of course, none of these dudes are polished or finished products. It's all about projection at this point. Edmunds, IMO, has the highest ceiling. Davenport, IMO, has the greatest chance to bust. Landry immediately offers you an elite skill-set with his speed rush and ability to bend, but he might have the lowest ceiling because he might *only* be a pass-rush specialist.

If you haven’t done so yet, I urge you all to read this article by former NFL defensive lineman Stephen White. It’s what put me over the top on wanting Davenport. He goes over the good and the bad with several GIF examples. Great read and breakdown.

He also stated Vea is the best D-lineman in the draft period.

Problem is I watched a ton of Washington games (I know 4 kids that go there on the football team) and he didn't stand out as much as he should have. When watching Washington State Hercules stood out on almost every damn play(just not sure playing DT in college then moving elsewhere always pans out. Even though Teddy Bruski :) had a nice career). When watching Alabama Da'Ron Payne was the guy at the end of the game you went WOW. When watching Goergia tell me the only thing you didn't think of after the game was Roquan Smith. If you are a college football nerd like me then you probably watch UCF play a few time and remembered Griffen stood out for what he did not what he was missing.

Great post...thanks for sharing. He's got elite size...and plays like a beast. That being said, at times he looks really slow. Overall, I wouldn't hate him as long as they feel he has the mental makeup to be successful. One thing Pace has done a great job of judging.

I think it's safe to say at this point (eh, no it's not lol) that unless Quenton Nelson is there at 8, we will be taking a pass rusher.

Another thing with Davenport... once you get him up to 270 or so (which I think we would if we draft him), I see no reason why you can't kick him inside to 3T and bring another EDGE rusher on the field to take his spot there.

No way. The guy wasn't as good with his hand on the ground. Switching him into a tight window with NFL OGs? Can't see it. He already has some pass rush moves. I don't know why you'd take those away from him.

His size and speed would be outstanding in there. I'm operating on the opinion he can still greatly improve his technique.

Plus, I'm a big fan of getting as many pass rushers as possible on the field in passing situations.

I went and re-watched the Senior Bowl just now, focusing on Davenport. Dude was impressive. He was seemingly getting pressures every few snaps he was on the field. Saw him win with power and with speed on the EDGE. Very promising.

That would totally work...on Madden

We're more likely to have him blitzing from a MLB role then move to 3 technique.

Ah yes, Madden. BFO's favorite buzzword

He's quick enough and he should be thick enough to do it once he's around that 270 mark. My question would be if he's too tall to find success there, still it wouldn't shock me one bit to see him play some 3T in his career if he does in fact bulk up.

Since I need to explain.

In last two years
Bradley Chubb= 20 sacks in 24 games. TFL 44
Marcus Davenport = 15 sacks in 24 games. TFL 27.5
Harold Landry= 21.5 sacks in 20 games TFL 30.5
Hercules Mata'afa- 15 sacks in 23 games TFL 36
Shaquem Grifiin- 18.5 sacks in 26 games TFL 33.5

So somehow someone explain to me how Davenport is going to be this elite pass rusher.
Of these five guys Davenport is by far the least productive and that will change against the elite of the elite I suppose?

I brought up Mathews and Clowney to prove your point that Davenport could excel if you look at Mathews numbers. ANd the best no matter who good they look could take a few years to develop. In Clowney no matter how good he is becoming he may never live up to what he was supposed to be. Edge rushers are a crap shot..

I am not saying any of these guys are going to better then the others I am saying if you ask guys to do what they never have you maybe asking way to much. I am saying the two guys that are listed at 6'1" maybe there in the 4th round. There stats and measurables match up with the best guys in the first. I am sure there are others out there that I didn't look up. But to ask Davenport to become an elite Pass rusher when he has never been one is asking way more then you should. He does look like a guy who can play the run and give 7 to 9 sacks a year. That is not a bad guy to have, but to say elite pass rusher is reaching.

The stats say Landry is the the best all around guy in this draft and it isn't even close. All he needs to do is prove injury is ok. In fact Landry's numbers are flat out off the flipping charts as far as production goes.

Dude..you posted like 13 links and made a one line comment..Sorry I asked you to explain.

I'm with you on Landry...That being said, you can't just look at stats and measurables when projecting guys. Watch the tape and you will see that Davenport has much more upside then Griffin or Herculues..both of whom I think will be lucky to make NFL rosters.

How can you judge Hercules at all. HE played DT. he is definitely a shot in the dark.

Griffin on the other hand I would disagree with you until I was blue in the face. This kid at worse will be a special teams demon for the next ten years. Great tackler with 4.38 speed at almost 230 lbs. There will always be a place for a guy with this kinda of athletic ability and pure football ability.

Like I said if he had 2 hands he would be right up there with Smith if not higher. Watch the film and you will notice he stands out in every game. The kid can flat out ball. More athletic and bigger than his brother who made an NFL roster.

I've watched the film. In college, he played well.

As a pro, he's not in great shape, he'll struggle to get off blocks, and he'll struggle to overcome his handicap. Sorry if that's harsh, but the guys got a beer belly. It's a great story and he's accomplished a lot, but reality is about to set in.

Hercules shot gaps..90% of the time he was stonewalled,10% of the time he penetrated. In the pros, he'll be swatted away like a gnat.. a really small gnat. Can he adjust and play the edge, maybe..but I don't expect much out of him. He's Rudy, do enjoy chearing him on.

4.38 at 230 lbs, the beer in his belly must be fuelling him well! Very little reason for most pro athletes to cut down to low body fat to look "athletic". If he needs a little bit higher body fat to keep his strength and it doesn't kill his speed/quickness... well I couldn't be less bothered.

Heard the same thing from another guy when Bruschi came out. He was a DT in the Desert Swarm defense. About same size.

I didn’t have him in my early November mock. I put him at the end of the first round in the initial list I put together this time around, and then multiple execs told me he’s not getting out of the Top 15. I wound up putting him at 14, behind only Chubb among rushers, and Davenport clearly has a chance to rise higher.
