R7, P224: Javon Wims, WR - Georgia

Wims was a high school basketball star in Miami, but tried his hand at football at Belhaven College in 2014. He was coached by Hal Mumme in his one season there, playing in six games before a broken ankle ended his season. Wims left Belhaven at the semester break, working at a clothing store before enrolling at Hinds Community College in 2015, where he finished with 47 catches for 779 yards and nine scores. The top-five JUCO receiver prospect signed with Georgia for 2016, and he contributed immediately, starting three of 13 games played (17 receptions, 190 yards) and catching his first touchdown in the team's bowl game. Wims was one of the biggest draft risers as a senior, leading the Bulldogs with 45 receptions for 720 yards and seven touchdowns in the team's SEC championship season.

Improving prospect with good size and great ball skills, but a lack of suddenness and long speed. He created a highlight reel full of impressive catches in 2017, but he will have to prove he can free himself from press corners looking to jam his release and squat on underneath routes. Wims has the size and tools to work with, but he'll need to play to his size and continue to improve as a route runner. He has the potential to earn a spot at WR4 or WR5 as a pro.

STRENGTHS

Very good size with impressive downfield ball skills
Doesn't have to track it to catch it
Makes catches with quick, late hands and sudden contortions in space
Makes adjustments to win catch positioning
Good high school rebounder who uses springs and basketball timing to snatch it at the highest point possible
Excels on back shoulder throws
Hands catcher
Developed high-knee stutter-step to generate uncertainty and push for improved throwing window on hitch routes
Has size as wall-off blocker and to crack down on the edge

WEAKNESSES

Lacks sudden feet and smart hands to rid himself of pesky press corners
Too often hemmed up and taken off route schedule
Benefitted from loads of hitch throws and comebacks
Missing jets to climb past coverage and separate
Physical corners crowd him against the boundary on outside release
Route speed is dull
Lacks separation acceleration out of short and intermediate breaks
Needs to use big frame to shield catch point
Inconsistent finisher on tightly-contested catches
Drops came when lead into traffic
Average run-after-catch talent
Can become more aggressive as blocker

That will come in handy in the red zone.

AR15 will face the best corner and maybe even double coverage in the red zone. Gabriel or Miller will be a concern too. Nobody will think twice about this guy. With his leaping ability against the third CB or some DB he's going to have lots of inches in height in a jump ball situation. Works for me.

Same size as White. Other than that I don’t know much about him.

well that was fun. he doesnt look like he can separate very well but he certainly can track and highpoint, and looks like he has pretty good body control too.

Wims is a curious choice. He looks like an anti-west coast kinda guy to me. Routes aren't very crisp and doesn't separate well. But his gift is to go up and get it with his size, length and athletic ability. He might be a poor man's Alshon Jeffery. He's a red zone guy or sticks mover, not a field stretcher. I definitely think there's a place for guys like that. He's the kind of guy a QB can fall in love with when the play breaks down and all he has to do is throw it up high and more often than not, Wims will come down with it. I just wonder how well that skill set will be appreciated by a coaching staff that seems enamored by winning with route running, stretching the field and getting it out of the QB's hand on time. It will be interesting to watch.

It's also interesting to discover that both he and Anthony Miller were originally collegiate walk ons.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Go back to leather helmets, NFL.

He is going to be #4 in a all go route formation that both Nagy and Hellfrich used to run in their respective offenses. His job is going to be to run down the field and win 50/50 balls, which he looks to excel at. Good pick for the 7th round. With some proper coaching, he might turn into, as someone else said, a poor man's Alshon Jeffrey.

How we were able to draft Wims.

If Inman caught 2 more passes we wouldn't have had the pick because it would've went to the Chargers.

Pace really got the better of them with that 25 catch clause.
How he pulled that off, I have no idea.
