2019 NFL Draft open discussion

I figure we could use a general catch all draft thread.

I really like QB Clayton Thorson. He is regarded as a 2-3 rounder. If he is there in the 4th I would take him. I might even in the 3rd.

Would any of you take him in the 4th?

Due to the limited amount of picks I would highly doubt they take a qb at all with chase still on board.

RB is probably the biggest need followed by safety, but experience with Pace has shown most of those holes will be filled prior to the draft so they aren’t backed into a corner and can take BPA.

If Thorson is available with one of our 7th round picks (don't think he's a R2-R4 talent IMO) - I'd be all over it. Otherwise with the limited amount of picks we have, I think we need to address other areas.

The only issue I have with that logic is talent. Is hard to draft a certain position of need on day 3 with high expectations. I can see not drafting a QB as they have Daniels. But you can't really dedicate rounds to exact positions.

Nagy tends to stay true to his draft board. How he sets up his board would be an interesting tidbit to see, but I don't think he dedicates any round to any position.
(On edit...Mitch excluded for QB in round 1)

wondering if Pace has any wheeling-dealing in store for us ... Bears don't have the draft picks to be a big player but there could still be something he has in mind

it is kind of calming going into a draft with confidence in those who are running it ... we may not have any idea of what they are going to do, but we can relax with the knowledge they are fully qualified to make those decisions

plus, without a first or second round pick, this was going to be a draft with less anticipation ... I don't see how or why Pace would trade to get into the 1st round, but a move into the 2nd wouldn't surprise me

Howard and the Bears third could probably get them into the bottom of the 2nd.

Did you guys see this tweet regarding Miles Sanders? Looks like he's in for a private visit in Chicago. He took it off his IG story immediately - makes me wonder, we've seen this before with Anthony Miller and Trubisky the year before, could Sanders be Pace's guy? Trade up into R2 this year?

I sure did :)

I don't know if he makes it to our pick so if we want him we may have to move up.

Does anyone think the Bears could draft a WR at some point with their 5 picks? I know they signed Patterson - so chances are slim - but was curious what everyone else thought.

I have assumed they would take a wr. RB and S seem like sure things. Oline, WR, Cb are probably secondary priorities.

Looking at the depth chart 4 WR seem like sure things to make the roster. Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson.

Javon Wims I think is also a good bet but you never know. Sure he looked good but it's still relatively a unknown.

Then you have the fodder. Tanner Gentry, Cyril Grayson, Marvin Hall, Jordan Williams-Lambert.

Also, let's get a recount of who's everyone top 5 RB prospects that you want the Bears to draft. Mine are:

1. Darrell Henderson
2. Miles Sanders
3. Bruce Anderson (R4 or later)
4. Rodney Anderson (R5 or later)
5. Bryce Love (R5 or later)

I will say I'm not a David Montgomery guy, I know a lot of people like him but I just don't see it - maybe I'm blind.

It's possible. It's not likely, while still making payments on the Khalil Mack trade. Every draft factors in need, after all.

JMSO, it would need to be a situation where someone fell on whom they had a considerably higher grade. Someone who falls to, say, their Round 4 pick that they have an early Day 2 grade on, for instance — where the value outweighs other needs.

Robinson, Miller, Gabriel, Patterson, Wims, and Hall seems like a pretty decent stable of WRs. I could see them bringing in a UDFA WR to stash on the PS but I don't think they will spend significant draft resources on one.

Thanks for sharing, that was very interesting. Just shows how well Pace has been drafting the past 3 years to get that type of return on his draft picks. Hoping he can continue that trend this year with limited picks.

I'm interpreting this as players who I think will be available when we pick in round 3 (meaning Josh Jacobs, Damien Harris, and David Montgomery won't be included. I'm crossing my fingers Sanders will be there)

1. Miles Sanders
2. Darrell Henderson
3. Trayveon Williams
4. Bryce Love
5. Devin Singletary

Correct, it's tough to know who will be available in R3 but that's the best we can do at this point.

I do disagree with you on Montgomery, I think he'll be around when the Bears pick.

I'd be thrilled man... that dude is a stud! Why don't you like him?

He's got the least amount of explosive plays of any of the "top" RB's. He's got quick feet and decent in short area quickness. Can make the first guy miss, but always gets tackled from behind from the second tackler due to the lack of juice in his game. He seems like a slow player on tape and the Combine results confirmed that as well. It'd be one thing if a guy didn't test well at the Combine but the tape proved otherwise. But he's slow on tape and slow at the Combine - I just don't like how that translates to the next level.

If the Bears moved on from Howard because he didn't fit their offense and wasn't explosive, I just view Montgomery in the same light - a dude that doesn't generate a whole lot of explosive plays. So why would Nagy want to replace Howard with Montgomery then, if that's true?

Not saying that he and Howard are the same player, but they are similar in the sense that they don't create a lot of big plays and aren't explosive players. I think Nagy is looking for someone that can get big chunks of yards in a hurry, in the run and pass game - and I just don't see it with Montgomery.

Let me ask you this, why do you like him and how does he fit in Nagy's scheme?

There's a lot I like about him... he's a thick kid, has a track record of being able to be the focal point of an offense, he has solid hands and can run routes from the slot, he's got good vision and instincts to find the hole and make a defender miss, etc.

His long speed is a concern but he's a Kareem Hunt type in my eyes... I'd see if we could drop him to 210 lbs (Hunt dropped to 208 before he tore the NFL apart his rookie year) and unlock some speed.

Got it - I might have to watch Montgomery a little more. I didn't see him being used in the passing game all that much.

His head coach called him the best slot WR they had on the team.

I'll be honest. I've never been as disinterested in the NFL Draft as I am this year.

I'm still very interested - the middle rounds may not be as sexy as R1 and R2 but there's a lot of good talent to be had in Round 3-5.

Same - however, I do miss the days of when the Draft was completed on the weekend. R1 - R3 on Saturday and R4 - R7 on Sunday.

The 2nd round has always been my favorite... at least when we had picks in that round.
