We have like 11 picks next year...Why are we so obsessed with not moving draft picks?
A 5th rd this year, in a deep draft, for a 4th next year, when we have a lot of other picks, should not worry people like it does.
I think the McPhee comp is a good one..I hope this kid can contribute.

Actually, with that trade, I see 5 of their own, 0 from other teams, plus 3(?) late comps, for a total of (probably) 8 picks.
Slightly less than average draft capital, since the comps don't equal a R4 in value.

I don't think it's a bad move DP. Yeah, we gave up a fourth, but we got the tenth pick in the fifth this year. I have to believe that we'll finish in the top half of the league this year. That would mean we gave up less than a half round in compensation next year for a pick this year. Plus next year we have three sixths and a seventh as compensatory picks. We had the 19th pick in the fourth this year. That's a value of 64. The three six round compensatory picks are valued a little over 14, so that comes to a value of 42 next year. The fifth we obtained this year is worth 37.
So even if we made the move this year and the Vikings gave us the three sixths and a fifth for our fourth, we'd have 79 value to 64. Those three six round compensatory picks next year, will more than make up for us losing our fourth next year. And then doesn't even take into consideration the time value of the picks and that we'll most probably finish much better next season than we did this past season.... We better.
I don't like trading future picks either, but I'm okay with it in this case.

Yeesh. All this over a 4th round pick in a draft that might not even happen.

As a one for one draft swap, I definitely don't mind paying that 1 Rd "penalty" in this instance. Especially because there is so much unknown about what the college season and draft evaluation process will look like over the. next year.

I mean, 4th round picks can be valuable.
But OTOH, if the Bears had a 4th round grade on Gipson (and they should have had, he's good) and wanted that value this year, that's why they made the trade.
Given a choice between a front office that goes after the players they want and a front office that crosses its fingers hoping, say, Aaron Donald falls into your lap? Give me the former 100 times out of 100.

My initial anger was related to the first report I read that it was a trade up, which would have been an insane price to pay. I'm much more of a trade down guy than the reverse, but keeping 163 made it ok, just not necessarily what I would have done.
