....tomorrow I'm kitting up for my first American football game in the British American Football Association
There's probably more football in the UK than a lot of people realise, so at the start of this year, I decided to give it a go and joined the Coventry Jets! I turn 30 this year, so why not just try it
Tomorrow we play our (supposed) arch rivals the Leicester Falcons. We lost a lot of our players from previous seasons and hence are probably 60% rookies. Not much is expected of us, whilst Leicester are expected to win the division, so technically that takes the pressure of us.
I'm playing linebacker, but as I'm a bit under sized for LB and we play with only 2 corners and a safety I tend to play a role that includes a bit more pass coverage.
Bit nervous, bit excited, but massively looking forward to it. Only other sport I've played in the last few years is cricket and I can't say I've ever played a contact sport before, so... it's... new!
Wish Me Luck.... Bad to Worse!

Is there anything left of you?
Did you have fun?
Do you have coaches that know what they're doing or are you pretty much on your own for figuring it out?

Hope it went well. I'd wanted to do this for years but the London teams were too good for me to learn with so I stuck with rugby. I think 35 is a bit too old to make the transition nowskamanfrank wrote:....tomorrow I'm kitting up for my first American football game in the British American Football Association

Thanks guys! I survived!
Pretty sore yesterday, but all good.
We got beaten, heavily. We weren't expecting too much but the scoreline was pretty embarrassing (0-47). We played with heart but we were outsized, outschemed and they had significantly more talent both as a team and as individuals. The other thing that became apparent was the difference in squad numbers- they have a squad of 87 registered players, we had the same D on the field for almost the entire game and pretty much half an O-line by the end of the day. Our O struggled a lot, QB went out early and I think we only had 3 or 4 1st downs for the entire day. There were lots of 3+outs or worse, turnovers.
Our D was on the field a lot and we were just completely gassed. To put it into context it was 13-0 at the half, and the D was getting a lot of positive comments for toughness and putting up a stand, however as a team we capitulated in the third and fourth quarters.
Personally it was mixed- I got a fumble recovery and 3 or 4 tackles but I gave up completions on both passes that came my way which I'm disappointed about. I played almost every defensive snap though which is good, with the exception of a couple after I took a big hit. Also played on PAT blocks and (our single) KO.
Onto the next one in a couple of weeks.

I think you'd be surprised! There's certainly quite a few older guys out there. (By older, I mean older than 35!)malk wrote: I think 35 is a bit too old to make the transition now
We do indeed have coaches, our HC is a first year this year but also works with the GB u19s. The league is quite varied in terms of what facilities etc teams have though.Moriarty wrote: Do you have coaches that know what they're doing or are you pretty much on your own for figuring it out?

Pretty sweet man, good luck! Keep your head up and see what you hit, and don't worry about coverages right now. As you get more reps at LB you'll start to react instead of thinking so much (that was my issue when I played MIKE).

Cheers G08.
Had our second game this weekend, which was another case of lots of effort, heart and potential but not able to finish and be clinical when we needed to be...
Best thing for me was that I played every single defensive snap and was the only one to do so. Obviously pretty pleased with that because it meant the coaches didn't want to pull me off and I was able to keep up for the whole game.
A 0-28 loss. On this occasion however, we did at least get the ball moving on offense, with two drives getting into the end zone but called back for penalties, and a field goal attempt that resulted in a turnover on downs after a bad snap and not getting the kick off.
The opponent's (Nottingham Caesars) offense was very different this week- much more passing, particularly deep balls over the middle. We started off in zone but switched to man and became much more effective- something that I was pleased about because I much prefer man at the moment.
Personally, I had a good game with a couple of pass break ups, more tackles than the previous game and fewer missed tackles too. Although, I did give up a deep pass after being out paced by the WR which took them down to the 1 yard line. Also got run over on the 3 yard line because I went too high in the tackle- that ended in a TD. Technically one of the break ups should have been a pick too...
Anyway, mediocre level British football write ups aren't exactly going to light the board on fire but thought I'd offer an insight into what we get up to outside the US!

Thanks guys
Have a photo of me learning the hard way how to tackle bigger guys.... for reference, I'm 6'.
My tackling is generally better than this photo would suggest, but a couple of times in each game we've played I've slipped up mentally and not got low enough.

Out of interest, how much do people play football outside of educational institutions and the NFL in the US
Over here, club level football (soccer), rugby and cricket are all huge. There's a multitude of amateur clubs all over the country who typically play on a Sunday. Is it the same with you guys? Do many people play football as a hobby?
During our sessions we focus on football, so strength and conditioning are not included and we expected to prepare our bodies appropriately. Obviously this means that there is a broad range of athlete on the team
Personally, I'm using football and gym as motivation for each other and started both at the same time. I'm no where near strong enough so am working on that. At best I get to the gym three or four times a week, at worst, only once. Work is BONKERS at the moment, so I'm not doing as much as I should.

I think we probably have one session less per week than the teams who are a step up in quality (coincidence huh!?). We train on a Sunday, unless we have a game. Then we have a video session or lids only session on a Wednesdaymalk wrote:

Grown men playing real, 11-on-11, full gear football?skamanfrank wrote:Out of interest, how much do people play football outside of educational institutions and the NFL in the US

Very little, really.
It's mostly a spectator sport here.
There's youth football that isn't tied to schools - but outside of the South, that's starting and will likely keep taking a real hit, now that more about brain injury is being learned.
Playing no gear football with 10 or friends (aka "sandlot" or "playground" football) used to be fairly popular decades ago. But kids hardly play outside anymore, usually only play organized outdoor activities, and the open spaces open to the public for it rarely exist anymore either (2 of the 3 places I used to play are no longer playable, 1 looks like maybe still doable).

I play full contact flag football..Basically you hit, wrap up, and pull the flag instead of pull to the ground. The thought of playing tackle at my age scares me...lol. So definitely kudos to you!

There are several "semi pro" leagues all over the country. They are poorly advertised and the players have to pay to play and practice. In my area, we have 4 such teams, one being an arena football team. There are also 3 major flag football leagues in my area, and many of the semi pro players also play in these flag leagues. 2 of these leagues are bring your own team and compete, and there are 2-3 teams that compete every year in both leagues for the title. In the league I play in, guys sign up and we draft players on new teams every year...makes for some interesting seasons.
I will kill you if you cut me at the knees. You will drink with me when invited and stay til I say so. We only listen to American Music. I make men nervous with just my presence. I expect an apology if you hold. I throw linemen at QB's. Believe the Lore!

I've always found it a bit strange that there isn't more organised team sports in America. Over here there are 92 professional football teams, around 100 pro rugby, 18 pro cricket (with loads of semi pro teams).
After that every town and most villages will have a football, rugby and cricket teams in competitive leagues. Rugby alone has 1900 teams in the UK.
On the other hand, hardly anyone watches school sports, be it high school, college (17-18 year olds) or University.
Funny how some things are different.

Exactly what I was thinking! Generally, the only people who go to watch school sports are parents of the students playing. On top of that, it's "normal" for a boy of school age to play football/rugby/cricket at school AND for a club on a Saturday/Sunday.malk wrote: After that every town and most villages will have a football, rugby and cricket teams in competitive leagues. Yup. Can you imagine whole towns rocking up to a school football match?! I guess it's because the US is bigger geographically so there's less on your doorstep to do. Over here virtually everyone lives within 50 miles of a top flight sports team.skamanfrank wrote:Exactly what I was thinking! So, another Sunday, another game and unfortunately game 3 of our season resulted in another loss.
We were again playing the Nottingham Caesars, but this time at their home field, about 1hr 30mins away.
Another game in which we showed potential and heart but alas, a bit more than that is required to come away with the victory. There were positives though- mostly that we did put some points on the board for the first time this season! Unfortunately, it was only 7 and they came from special teams thanks to a superb end to end kick off return for a touchdown by our safety (who then kicked the extra point too).
On a personal level I was very pleased to be named defensive MVP. I got two picks (one of which I ran back to midfield from our own goal line), a couple of pass break ups and a few tackles also. I was also very pleased to play every single defensive snap again.
We were aware from our last game and seeing film of the Caesars before that the QB likes to air the ball out, so we spent a majority of the game in zone coverage. This meant that my role was more safety that linebacker for a lot of the game- but I didn't mind this at all, I'm quite happy playing either.
We struggled offensively again, but even so the defence need to keep the scores down to give our offence a chance- although again, the D were simply on the field for too long.
At half time we were only 3 points down with the score at 7-10, but unfortunately as we have seen in the last couple of games things really started to get away from us half way through the second half. It seems that we lose the battle of attrition, as well as losing our focus and mental clarity. Hopefully that is something that will improve with training and as the season goes on. There were some passionate words after the game from a few of us, including myself, that hopefully everyone will take note of- they weren't all friendly words either to be honest. The worry now is that we have been swept by the Caesars, potentially the easiest team on our schedule.
EDIT: I got the final score wrong
Final score- 7-39
To put that final score into perspective....
At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was 7-17. The next (and last) six Caesars drives looked like this:
3 and out
3 and out
3 and out
TD (2 plays)
TD (2 plays)
TD (4 plays)
Their last three (and scoring) drives all started inside our own 20 yard line
Nottingham's home games are actually recorded and streamed live by a production company, so the footage is available on YouTube.
My first pick can be seen here:

We are also lucky to have a great photographer associated to the team, who grabbed some great shots:

This weekend we were visited by the Sandwell Steelers, a long term rival and well drilled team.
We lost, again. There's only so much I can say and it will all sound exactly the same as the last few games from a team point of view, so I shan't bother. Worst score line yet, giving up a 50 burger.
HOWEVER, from a personal point of view- I got another two picks and SCORED A TOUCHDOWN! In the first quarter I picked off a pass destined for the flat and took it back to the house. It was the first score of the game putting us up by 6 and is the first time that we have held the lead in a game since last year. Unfortunately, this was the only score of the game, with us missing the PAT (bad snap, holder scrambled) and a FG later in the game.
I played a majority of the game at safety. We actually ended up with 1 DB on the field and either LBs or a WR filling in at corner. My game was a bit of a mixture, I took home defensive MVP again, but I'm not overly convinced that I or anyone else should been credited after giving up 50 points. Low lights were two missed tackles- the second of which went for a TD with the receiver making 2 or 3 men miss before getting to me and I let one deep pass over my head- I got a hand to it and it would have been a spectacular break up, but not enough contact on the ball and being the last man back I should have played safe and played the man not the ball. Had another pick opportunity too, but unfortunately couldn't quite get my hands there in time but did enough to keep it away from the receiver.
Next game is an away trip to Doncaster which is a couple of hours up the motorway. That will not be a fun coach trip back if we play like we did this weekend....

Congrats
I think you have more career picks than a number of Bear DBs

Thanks!
Bit of a fall from grace this week....
2 dropped interceptions and a hit to the head in the 3rd quarter ruled me out for the rest of the game after not being cleared to return by medical staff. Was a bit unfortunate, just hit the back of my head pretty hard on the floor during a tackle. Still got a bit of head ache a couple of days later. I'm in a concussion protocol now which means no playing or training until I'm cleared.
Poorly timed to be honest because we're just starting a run of three back to back away games on consecutive Sundays and one of our starting linebackers just quit....
Oh, we lost. Again. Obviously. 0-5

Thanks man- appreciate it! It felt good! I've got 4 picks (1 of which was a pick six) and a fumble recovery this year, so quite please but there's plenty of scope for more.
Unfortunately it's only gone from bad to worse really this season, with the club now pretty much in a state of disarray.
At the time of the last update we were 0-5, I'd just got a hit to the head with a suspected (not confirmed) concussion and we were just starting a run of three back to back games.
Game 6- we were as always short on numbers, so as a result I begged and pleaded with the coaching staff to let me play kit up, assuring them that my head was fine and it was just a knock, not a concussion. Eventually they relented making me promise that any knock or issues I report and come out of the game.
I played as a starter in the game, but was very cautious and was not fully committed to contact in all honesty. We didn't have a full defence anyway, so I was mostly there to cover and stop guys being open. 1 PBU/shoulda been a pick, but more importantly no knocks. Of course, we lost, heavily, but it was out grittiest performance as a team with our smallest numbers to date. We actually came away very positive, feeling very good about the team atmosphere and attitudes of the core players who were there.
Game 7- A beaten up team, short on numbers, the game was cancelled, to much ridicule from the rest of the League. Unfortunately with the numbers available we simply couldn't have gone ahead. We didn't have a single ILB, didn't have a full Dline and were up against the strongest running team and the most physical team in the league in Leicester Falcons. An embarrassing, but needed concession.
Game 8- More embarrassment. Called at the half 0-67 to the Sandwell Steelers. We turned up with only 19 players losing some to injuries throughout the first half too. I had a woeful half of football, missing multiple tackles (putting my head down as approaching contact, TERRIBLE form. Not sure why but I've lost my tackling form completely since the Doncaster game). I also got PANCAKED on a kick return I was blocking for. More ridicule from the rest of the League.
Game 9- Shropshire Revolution visited our new home ground (long story, we fell out with our previous facility owners mid season). I was very excited for this one, only to roll my ankle on Saturday afternoon dog walking and blowing up my ankle. Suspected sprained, not broken, but massively swollen and blue. No game for me.
We lost the game, but scored on a kick off return, defence got a sack and a pick, so it wasn't all bad. Unfortunately a returning player who had been out since about Game 3 dislocated his ankle in a BRUTAL injury. It was gross, his foot was just hanging there flapping about! Thankfully he's OK and remarkably is already hobbling around.
First half of my season was great and I really felt a push for Defensive rookie was on, unfortunately my last few games have not supported or followed that trend, so I need to finish strong.
With regards to the club- there is a takeover bid in place that is causing a strong divide. If it goes ahead the Coventry Jets will be no more and instead become the Etone Jaguars. Unfortunately, there is very little in the current management of the club and whilst I think it is sad, I will likely be supporting the takeover proposal in the vote next week.
SO
One game left, couple of weeks time. Doncaster, at home... couple of weeks time. We'll see.
