Otis Day wrote:Talk about shitty parents and shitty kids, I am a juvenile probation officer. This is what I deal with 24/7. Most of these kids don't have a chance due to their upbringing or lack thereof. Majority of the kids are from single parent, mother only, families. they have no respect for their mothers and less respect for anyone in authority. They take out their frustration for being "fatherless" by being pricks to everyone.

There are the few kids who just made a dumb mistake, but like I said they are few and far between.

You have the kids who continually reoffend and their mothers who want to blame everyone but themselves and the kid.

It really boils down to the parents being worse than the kid. they minimize, deny and place blame on anyone and everyone except themselves and the kid. I actually had a parent last week blame the school for holding a grudge against her son for things he did int the 5th grade. he is now in high school and none of his teachers knew him 6 yrs ago.

I have been looking for about a year. This job pays shit. I have 22 yrs experience with the emotionally challenged and delinquent crowd. Far too long. I am pretty much stuck due to my age I feel and taht pisses me off. Not many people/companies/employers want to take a chance on a 45 yr old.

This post was made in Nov. 08 and not a phucking thing has changed. If anything it has gotten worse. I have now started doing some first offender probation with adults charged with drug offenses.

The juvies are still effed up.

Calgon take me away :frustrated:

I actually got a new job about 3 months ago. Well, same company, new position....and I love it. I'm now a project manager for our company's "internet solutions" division.

It's hard, and I work a alot, but for the first time in a long time I'm happy coming into work every day. There are challenges and issues, but at least I look forward to tackling them every day.

I'm happy for you WAB! I continue to work at my redundant mindless job, but I am working on setting wheels in motion for my graphic design company, so hopefully that will help out getting me away from the office.

congratulations :toast:

sounds like my situation after our re-organization ... didn't get a raise or promotion, but my job title changed and my responsibilities went back to being more techie oriented as it was prior to the last re-org ... so I'm reasonably happy at the moment and have less required interaction with the manager dispshits that made things unsavory

I have a perfect example

a new data model system, with a special designed software application riding along a Unix platform ... the 3 managers of the project are all well educated, degrees in hand, one even with a PhD

these 3 "geniuses" trashed their own application software because they couldn't figure out the power saver function on the monitor they were using ... so every time the monitor went blank, they'd reboot the system ... Unix recovered after each hard boot, but their application eventually did not, costing them a couple weeks of work to rebuild their specialized custom software application

like a Dilbert comic strip, come to life before my eyes

see, and there's the dilemma

they are smart enough to be able to write software applications from scratch, and have them actually work as a useful tool ... that is something I can't do and it is not in my area of expertise

but then they have zero base common sense for anything else

today's real life Dilbert moment:

e-mail received : The Health and Safety in the Workplace conference will be held in the Science Center Auditorium between 9:00am and 2:00pm today, June 9th. Refreshments will be served and many Health and Safety specialists will be on hand to offer suggestions and provide interesting interactive handouts. So stop by and say hello!

sounds kind of nice huh?

the time stamp on the email was 1:40pm, today June 9th

getting it at 1:40pm YESTERDAY probably would have been more helpful

wonder how long it will take them to figure out why attendance was so low?

You think that's bad. I just got back from a meeting that was about the cancelation of a meeting that was supposed to happen tomorrow. Talk about a waste of a half hour.

You work for a large insurance company, right? I'd bet you know at least one of my cousins (I have a bunch that work there)... he's in IS and I believe has some responsibility for managing websphere development of some sort. A really good guy... except for the insane evangelical bent...

Yep, I do. We are very....neighborly....here. But there are about 17,000 people that work within our 4 complexes just here in my town.

I am on LinkenIn but to be honest it's been a while since I have been on there. Year or so probably.

[/grave dig]

Another thing that pisses me off about work is people who are chronically late. I don't see how hard it is to get your ass into work. These people walk through the door at the scheduled time, but aren't actually working for like 20-30 minutes. They sit there and dick around. And they always have an excuse. I can sort of understand when they have kids, SORT OF. But all the same - make the time and get your ass into your seat and work ON TIME.

one of our programmer types is pretty airheaded ... his "primary server" (as dubbed by him) can have an alarm for days and he seems to not care, but if his "test & development" server has a glitch, he expects others to come in after hours to address it (he won't come in, but expects others to)

and while he seems to be a complete ass when it comes to playing nice with others for actual operational requirements, it won't stop him from bending your ear on all of the world's problems, which of course he has all the answers to

yet he can't trouble himself to fix a buggy line of Unix code in an application that he wrote

I had a meeting today where two of our web developers were taking about something to each other during the meeting. Typically as the project manager, I'm ok with side conversations related to the project. There conversation was pretty animated so I could tell that they were not please with a certain direction of the project, but I really had no idea because they were speaking Indian to each other. When i asked them if they had a question or something they would like to address with the group, one simply said "no". Dammit it bothered me. What they hell were you just talking about while sighing and making annoyed hand motions towards the presenter then??

Am I just an ass, or does this seem out of line?

No. I hate that type of crap. The point of being a cohesive team of coworkers is to be open and honest with each other about work related issues. If they're talking about random non-work crap then whatever, but if they're clearly unhappy with something, speak the f**k up.

Take one aside & tell them it is "just between you two"... but you need to know what they were concerned about.

You feel like you're doing something wrong telling them to speak english, but they're doing this intentionally so others can't understand what they're saying. It's like passing notes. If it's important enough to say during my meeting, everyone should hear it so speak the f*&k up.

Maybe... but a lot of times with second language situations the folks are just better able to express the "nuance" of their concern with the language they're more comfortable with... so it isn't necessarily "secret" or "rebellion"... but there is something that they feel is important (and probably complicated) that is not being communicated. That's why I recommended taking someone aside & letting them know that you're not going to hold them to the precision of the words, necessarily - but want to understand the gist of the concern. Plus, with *some* cultures it is inappropriate to appear to be significantly negative in a group, and so you just take those conversations off-line & then come together later & the issues can be presented to the group that way.

This isn't speculation - this is what I do for a living, basically.

It wasn't so much that they weren't speaking english, it was that they were obviously concerned about something and thier discussion probably could have benefitted others in the project group.

I did pull them aside after the meeting and asked what was up. They are pretty decent guys but they still said it was "nothing". Oh well, it's been a couple days and no issues so I'm blowing it off for now.

That's all fine if they're willing to share the conversation, but if you can't tell me what you're talking about, you don't need to be talking about it. Sure, most of the time the conversation is "does that mean he wants this?"... "no, all you have to do is this", which is perfectly acceptable but you've got to own up to the language barrier, otherwise people will just assume you're talking about them... because that happens a lot. Hell, you can at least have enough respect to lie to me. Maybe I'm too much of a literalist, but when I ask what you're talking about, "NOTHING" isn't the answer I'm looking for. Words are coming out of your f*&king mouth. "It's a private conversation and it's none of you damn business" would make me happier than... "nothing."

I also just realized I'm projecting a bit of the parenting thing here. When I get the "nothing" answer from my girls it means they're doing something I just told them not to do.

From another thread but more relavent to this one...
gaba wrote:Uh... I think you guys might want to see a doctor about that. I don't smell great after a hard day's work. Unpleasant, yes... but never weapon's grade. That might be a little above and beyond.
Boris13c wrote:then I guess you just don't work as hard as the rest of us :-P

Aside from occasionally being drafted to move furniture or mow an elderly relative's yard, I haven't done a day of real, blood-sweat-and-tear manual labor in a good long while. Sadly, those days are coming to an end. My mother is being forced into retirement and having someone available that I trust completely with my kids (she wasn't perfect but I think I turned out okay) who is not only willing, but excited to take on a full-time parenting role, reverses probably 80% of the factors that led me to become a stay-at-home parent.

I have some issues with people, and some anxiety issue that make job hunting a real chore, but I'm kind of looking forward to it. I loved being a stay-at-home parent, but over the last year or so the percentage I do (versus what Wifey does) has increased quite a bit, which has made the overall performance drop, and the appreciation all but disappear. A pretty fair majority of people seem to think that I, as a man, doing a job that is a perfectly acceptable lifelong career choice for a woman, am a bum. Wifey used to defend me. If nobody appreciates what I do, I might as well be getting paid, right? Like most of my former jobs, I don't love how it's ending, but the change will be a relief.

Which brings me to my point (almost)... I have a sh*tty work history and a CDL that I have no desire to use. I have few qualifications, but I'm plenty smart (even though I don't have any certificates, signed by other people with certificates, to prove it) and I've been good at pretty much everything I've ever tried (I tried out for the track team in junior high, that wasn't so successful). SOOOOOoooo... (finally to the point) what should I do with the rest of my life? I feel like a high school senior, except I have the benefit of several years of experience which, while seemingly wasted, has allowed me to cross quite a few options off the list.

#1. I know I am not good with people, especially angry people. Customer service in any form is out of the question.

#2. While I'm frequently found to be full of sh*t, when it matters, I am honest to a fault. This seems to be the first hurdle when I'm getting to know a new boss. You can ask me anything, but don't expect to like the answer. That and I've got a sh*tty poker face. So, sales is really not an option.

#3. I can't abide with stupidity. If you're doing something wrong, I don't care how long you've been doing it, I'm not going to be a part of it. So that eliminated government jobs.

On the other hand... any job I get at this point is going to pay pretty sh*tty, so compensation and benefits are hardly an issue. We're getting by on wifey's pay, so whatever I make is gravy. This leaves me free to try pretty much whatever I want. Right now I'm leaning towards, rodeo clown, rollercoaster operator, or rock star.

Any other suggestions?

BNSF Railroad. Go to bnsf.com follow all the bells and whistles that lead you to the application part of the site. They will ask for a lot of information. Once you have registered there are listings in multiple states and Missouri seems to always have them. I have seen listings for Springfield (If I rmember that is your area). The pay is good and the job listings vary.

They have listings for all types of qualifications. My brother got hired on at 45. My cousin at 49 so age doesn't seem to be an issue. Hell I finally got a call back the other day. The first one after applying approx 13 times for various jobs. I am hoping this one will work out. Had phone interview Monday, thought it went well. If I don't get another interview I feel a big time drunk coming on.

Thought I would revisit this topic as I am still dealing with stupid ass, mother fugging delinquents and their dumb ass, worthless, lame brained parents. The BNSF thing hasn't paid off yet *&%$@#!!!!!!

The hate for my job grows daily and I can't stand being here much longer. I can't see myself dealing with this population into my 60s!! :frustrated:

Hell, I have thought about starting to cook meth ;)

any others still hating on their job?
