Man dies at South Dakota hot dog eating contest
Posted: Jul 08, 2014 10:36 AM EST Updated: Jul 08, 2014 10:37 AM EST

CUSTER, S.D. (AP) - A Fourth of July hot dog eating contest in western South Dakota turned tragic when a contestant choked to death.

Walter Eagle Tail, 47, of Custer, died at a hospital Thursday after attempts to save him at the scene failed, Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler told the Rapid City Journal (http://bit.ly/1n3EKRD" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).

"There was someone doing CPR when we arrived," Wheeler said. "He probably just suffocated. It got lodged in his throat and they (paramedics) couldn't get it out.

"It all happened within minutes," the sheriff said.

The Custer Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the contest, canceled a pie-eating contest scheduled for Friday.

well, at least they had the good sense to then cancel the pie eating contest

I have never understood the whole competitive eating thing, nor how/why some of the competitive eating events are covered by ESPN as a "sport"

Forgotten Vials of Smallpox Found in Storage Room
ATLANTA — Jul 8, 2014, 12:03 PM ET
By MIKE STOBBE AP Medical Writer
Associated Press

Government officials say workers cleaning a storage room at a research center made a startling discovery last week — decades-old vials of smallpox forgotten in a cardboard box.

The only other known smallpox samples are in super-secure labs in the U.S. and Russia.

Officials say the six vials of freeze-dried virus were sealed and pose no immediate danger. The virus usually has to be kept cold to remain alive and dangerous. The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions says these were stored at room temperature.

Further tests will determine if the samples are dead.

The vials were found at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland and may have been stored there since the 1950s.

One of the most deadly diseases in history, smallpox was declared eradicated in the 1980s.

so how can a group responsible for health "forget" about vials containing one of the deadliest diseases they were working on at the time?

there is a bad joke about "close enough for government work" in there somewhere, but I don't really feel like laughing this off

Weird News :
Woman Confesses To Filming Porn In Church After Tipster Recognizes Her Breasts
The Huffington Post | By Andres Jauregui
Posted: 08/12/2014 11:26 am EDT Updated: 08/12/2014 11:59 am EDT

This isn't your run-of-the-mill confession.

A woman in Austria admitted to filming a pornographic video inside a church after a tipster recognized her breasts.

In a video posted online, the woman, whose face is not shown, undoes her top and caresses her breasts while holding what appears to be a Bible and a rosary. The New York Daily News reported that at least two porn videos featuring the same woman were filmed at the same church in June.

According to the Austrian Times, Bernhard Pauer, a priest with the Diocese of Linz, went to police after parishioners said they recognized their church in the video.

After the footage was screened on local television, a tipster came forward and said he recognized the woman's breasts. Horsching police were then able to track down the 24-year-old amateur video star, who confessed. She now faces charges of offending religious feeling and desecration of a church.

Mother charged after son sets himself on fire for Facebook video
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. Tue Aug 12, 2014 9:42am EDT

(Reuters) - A North Carolina woman is accused of helping record her teenage son set himself on fire after he doused his body with fingernail polish as part of a social media stunt, police said.

Janie Lachelle Talley, 41, watched as her 16-year-old son attempted to complete a "fire challenge" video for Facebook on July 29, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Monday. The boy suffered minor burns on his chest and neck.

The video showed others put out the fire.

"The mother of the victim was present and aware of what her son doing and facilitated the recording," a police statement said.

Police arrested Talley on Aug. 6 and charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, according to the statement.

The "fire challenge" has been spreading on social media with people pouring flammable liquid on themselves, lighting it, trying to quickly extinguish the fire and then posting a video online.

the ice bucket challenge also started as a facebook challenge (now gone nuts but is helping rake in cash for charity) ... how does setting yourself on fire in some way seem like a good idea?

maybe the challenges need to combine? so then the ice bucket can be dumped on the person that is on fire

Colorado town sues all its voters over election
The Associated Press
Posted on Wednesday, 08.13.14

CORTEZ, Colo. -- The Colorado mountain town of Montezuma is suing its 61 registered voters in an effort to sort out the results of an April election that the lawsuit says was filled with errors.

The Denver Post reports (http://goo.gl/vfDSB6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) that the lawsuit filed last week commands the voters to appear in court so a judge can examine the election results for mayor and town board.

Twelve people ran for mayor and Lesley Davis won by three votes. There are claims that second-home owners participated, and Davis says 13 voters and at least two candidates were not residents of the town. She says the lawsuit is the only option to determine how to move forward.

Several town residents have hired an attorney to challenge the lawsuit.

The Orion crew module, stacked atop its service module, moved out of the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sept 11. Orion was transported to the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at Kennedy where it will be fueled ahead of its December flight test. During the flight, Orion will travel 3,600 miles into space to test the spacecraft systems before humans begin traveling in Orion on future missions.

Found out the other day the local high school social studies class teaches about "white privilege".

Anyone have thoughts on it?

Lol.

I think it's odd. It is one of the best schools in the state. Majority white. I remember learning about "the glass ceiling". Some studies now show wage discrimination is basically gone when accounting for differences in things.

The issue is less to do with skin color and more to do with 3 basic things.

Poverty, education, and culture.

The kids that grew up in our local tailor Park generally were not successful. Because they grew up poor, with families that did not put education as a priority, and culturally accepted poor behavior. Unfortunately a high number of minorities grow up in similar environments. Something that should be looked at to fix the problem.

Boris, I was thinking about ya yesterday as I was sitting in Shorewood, IL. having a Portillos Italian Beef and Cheddar on a croissant. Had to top it off with a chocolate cake shake, OMG :hungry: It was fantastic.

that does sound fantastic

every time I go back to visit friends and family, my first stop is White Castle, and then I eat them in the car on the way to my daughter's house ... then the first actual restaurant trip is to Portillos, a short drive from my daughter's house

after that, I'm up for anything food wise the rest of the trip ... just have to get my White Castle and Italian Beef fix first

We make runs to Chicago, Shriners Hospital for my daughter, and cannot get away without pizza or Italian Beef. Since we were there about 8 weeks ago and had Giordanos, Portillos it was.

there are some really crappy deep dish pizza places on the east coast ... most have no idea what an actual deep dish pizza is ... so they serve up an extra thick crust with a normal layer of pizza toppings, meaning you are basically eating a loaf of bread with some pizza toppings

even the east coast Uno places don't do it right ... jerks

For what it's worth, I've had Portillos shipped from Chicago to here in Dallas. It's not "exactly" the same, but it's pretty damn close.

oh I do that all the time ... my gift to myself every so often when I feel the urge

I was happy a couple years ago to see actual chicago style giardiniera pop up in grocery stores ... haven't managed to convert any of the local sub shops to having chicago italian beef on the menu though ... it wouldn't be that hard if they had the interest ... the main component is the magical gravy/au jus, which is much different than any of the au jus dipping sauces you get with roast beef subs they sell

I have successfully used left over Portillos au jus with regular local bought shaved roast beef ... and it works, which extends the life of my Portillos gift

I've wanted to have this tried with salt lick BBQ from texas. Too scared it'll come nowhere near as good as in the restaurant

That 'S' Thing Everyone Drew in School, WHAT IS IT?

Image

it kind of looks familiar to me but I don't recall it being all overt he place as the author of the article implies

and to be honest, when I look at it now it resembles the S at the beginning of a Chicago Biker gang from the 70's ... the Satan somethings ... violent bunch

It's just easy to draw and I'm sure lots of people are just copying it. Most are probably just some kid named Sam who found a can of spray paint and lives close to a train yard!

The diamond-S is one of those things that is easy to draw, but it also is, in its own odd simple way, a great method of demonstrating artistic creation. Some people who have never looked at themselves as capable of creating something unique or don't understand concepts behind seeing multiple layers to shape, form, space, and visual thinking might draw this and it could open the floodgates.

I know that's kind of an exaggeration perhaps, but it's these little things kids idly doodle in their notebooks that maybe makes some child or teenager interested in something enriching that would otherwise just kind of ignore that whole section of their brain.

My wife is an elementary art teacher and she would love what you just said. I have an undergrad degree in sculpture and art history and I love what you said, I love looking at the side of trains when they go by because every 3rd or 4th car has something graffitied on it that is more than just graffiti, it's something that someone really worked on. You are e exactly right too, it was something simple that gave me the confidence to move on to try harder and more complicated stuff. The degree isn't worth shit but the creativity and drive I got out of it has helped me a ton, even as a medical scientist, as weird as that might sound.
