The #Bears have decided to release K Cody Parkey at the start of the league year, sources say. A fresh start is welcomed by both parties, and the Pro Bowler will likely find work quickly. He’s still due $3.5M guaranteed on his 2019 contract.

I am glad, but I don't think this happens if he chooses not to go on the TV show right after the loss. Just too inconsistent.

I’m sure some fans would like that.G08 wrote:Reading the subject before I clicked in, my thought was "like, with a knife?"
We all knew this was coming but it’s great news to hear. I’m sure Pace can find someone that won’t miss 11 times. Yeah, I’m still salty!

Good.
restructure Long and Trevathan with 2 year extensions each, cut Acho and Kwiatkowski, and we've got some space for Amos, Lynch, and maybe (maybe) Callahan or some other FA.

His salary bumped to $2M, because of the new CBA. Not sure I agree with cutting him, but I guess we'll see what Pagano and Pace think about that.Otis Day wrote:Why cut Kwiatkowski? He is still on rookie deal and has been decent as a backup and on special teams.

Kickers are just weird. They can get the yips and go from quality asset to turd pile for no discernible reason, bounce around a bit, and then come back to a different team and have 5 Pro Bowl seasons in a row.
Just look at Robbie Gould. Awesome for years, got weird and inaccurate for no apparent reasons, then went to San Fran and regained his old form.
So odds are, Parkey may well go to a new team and regain his Pro Bowl form without anyone ever knowing why he yipped out in Chicago. Or, he could go somewhere else, suck again, and end up kicking for his life in one of the lesser leagues. And it is pretty much even odds as to which way it will turn out for him, good or bad.
Bears need to hold a kicking caravan leaving no stone unturned. Arena League, AAF, free agents, maybe a draft pick ... anybody and anyone with any sort of game experience coming in to be 1 of the finalists to battle it out in training camp for the job.

It's so hard to kick in Chicago guys like Gould and Butler are hard to come by. I could see Parkey having success again if he kicks in a mild weather stadium or a dome. The thing that really bothered me about Parkey was he had to be told to practice at the stadium after he had the 4 off the upright game. It wasn't like he was 100% before that game. Because it's so difficult to kick there you would think a kicker would want to understand the wind and practice in all sorts of elements. Instead, the traffic was too much for him...
Looks like Goulds out of the mix... What a crazy deal they laid on him. Weird to see it on a kicker and it really sounded like he would've given us a home town discount because of his new house and the comments about him wanting his kids to grow up in Chicago... Shame we couldn't kick the tires.
There are a couple good kickers in the draft... Maybe use a 6th or 7th on one of them.

”Damn -- Khalil Mack had another strip sack?” Gruden asked rhetorically, shaking his head at the Oakland Raiders assistant coaches in his midst. “Are you ... kidding me?”

Via the Athletic:
Pace values leg strength considering the windy conditions in Chicago, and Redford Jones won over the staff to be the first part of the competition.
“These guys kinda come out of nowhere sometimes. So we had a, basically, an open-kicker workout,” Pace said. “And we went into it and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to be unbiased and we’re just gonna let it come to us.’ And he crushed that workout. It was impressive, so he’s on our team.”
How can Pace really evaluate a kicker in a tryout without all the pressures that come with the position? He listens for it.
“Sometimes you literally can almost turn your back and hear the way the ball is coming off their foot and feel the power and the pop,” he said. “So, you look for leg strength, you look for consistency, you look for trajectory, all their mechanics. Those are all things that go into play.”
Pace wouldn’t rule out having more than two on the 90-man roster.

what a breath of fresh air Ryan Pace is
he recognizes problems and is proactive in his solution making process ... and he actually has knowledge and a clue to actually being successful in his process
past GM's had the "throw something against the wall and see what sticks" approach which had mixed and mostly negative results
thank you Mr. Pace, and I am looking forward to seeing Redford Jones in action in his efforts to win the job

I still don't think we are drafting a kicker, especially with how few of picks we have.
I look for a string of FA's and UDFA's to parade through till we hit.

Bears make it official: Cody Parkey has been released
no fanfare as he is shown the door, just a footnote in an announcement about other thingsThe worst kept secret around the Bears this offseason has been that Cody Parkey would not be back with the team.
He was officially released on Wednesday. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy had already said they would release Parkey at the start of the new league year in the NFL. That's exactly how it went down on Wednesday.
Parkey's official release was snuck in the bottom half of a press release that included the team tendering contracts to defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris, linebacker Isaiah Irving and offensive lineman Rashaad Coward.

sounds like a young Janikowski ... which sounds ok to me
speaking of Janikowski, he may be on the retired list ... apparently still not healed from the end of season leg injury
