In a turn of events, 49ers’ franchise kicker Robbie Gould has pulled his contract proposals that he sent to San Francisco and told the team he will not negotiate or sign a long-term deal with them, and he would like to be traded, Gould said Tuesday.

Jarrett Payton is on the job, though.

I wanted Gould back since the first inkling it might be possible

never understood what happened with him getting the yips, but I reluctantly agreed a change of scenery might be good for him ... in hindsight (which is always 20-20), the Bears should have kept him and let him work through his temporary madness

I think the toxicity at Halas Hall was part of the kicking problem. That place became a complete shit-show for over a decade.

I found and bumped the thread from 2016 when Gould was cut. It is in the Halas Hall forum, and is interesting reading.

Lots of mixed feelings about him going, and even more mixed feelings on who was replacing him.

Per Schefter: Gould will not sign - wants to be traded

I’d love him back, and we need a kicker like him, but the pick wouldn’t be a good one. Maybe a 7th next year when we’ve got 10 of them. We certainly don’t have the draft capital this year.

the full story from Schefter :

Kicker Gould ditches talks, wants off 49ers
San Francisco 49ers franchise kicker Robbie Gould says he has pulled the contract proposals he sent to the team and told the Niners that he will not negotiate or sign a long-term deal with them and wants to be traded.

Gould said Tuesday that if he reports at all, it will not be before the 49ers' Sept. 8 regular-season opener, making him a summer holdout.

Gould's agent, Brian Mackler, said: "At this time, we are unsure when or if he will report. It will not be prior to Sept 8, at the earliest, if at all."

The 36-year-old Gould indicated that he has gotten tired of 14 months of contract negotiations and wants to be closer to his wife and children in Chicago. After 11 years with the Bears, Gould was released. He spent 2016 with the New York Giants before signing a two-year deal with the Niners. Gould's wife and three boys under age 5 stayed in Chicago.

story points out Gould is miffed the 49ers pursued Gostkowski rather than bargain in good faith with him

I may be in the minority, but the Bears need to move on. No sense signing a 36 yr old kicker at this point. No picks to use, picks are more important at this point. Would Pace really admit he made a mistake and bring the guy back? I don't think so.

Dunno if I'd trade a pick this year (next year's 6th maybe), but Pace can get around the error admission by dumping it in John Fox's lap if he needs to. I don't know anything about Pace's ego to know whether he needs to or not, but he has a prefab scapegoat if he wants one.

I'd be so scared that we get him back, only for him to fall off a cliff performance wise and sour the whole thing...

Things are lining up. Make this trade Pace. We have ten picks next year. We do not need that many. Use one to move up this year to get a RB and use another to get Gould. We still have 8 and we don't even need that many.

What are the odds we need a kicker at the same time Gould's situation with the 49'ers goes south?

How poetic would it be for him to kick the Super Bowl winning field goal for us?

Ive got a lot of anger to ration out over the next 4-5 months, and I'm sure as hell not going to dump it out recklessly here in freakin' August.

Shanahan: 49ers won't OK Gould's trade request
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Two days after kicker Robbie Gould and his agent told ESPN that Gould would like the San Francisco 49ers to trade him back closer to his Chicago home, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear that Gould's request isn't likely to be granted.

Asked Thursday night whether the Niners would trade Gould, Shanahan offered a simple reply.

"No," Shanahan said.

According to Shanahan, while the 49ers understand Gould's desire to get closer to home, they also have a responsibility to put together the best possible roster.

"We love having Robbie here," Shanahan said. "We understand that he doesn't want to live here long-term and he's made that clear to us and we get that. But we do have a franchise tag and he's that good of a kicker that he's worth franchising. Unfortunately, we know we're not going to have him here long-term. I think that's been pretty clear. No hard feelings about that. I can understand his reasons but I'm pretty excited to have a good kicker this year."

The question, then, is if and when Gould will actually play for the 49ers this year. San Francisco put the franchise tag on Gould in February, a designation that comes with an offer of a one-year deal for around $5 million.
