I don't know if I'm projecting some mad hope but I get the feeling that Gould would take a significant home town discount. Chance of wins, being near his family etc. Pace doesn't strike me as someone who would really turn the screws on a contract when he has leverage but something amicable could well be in order.

And whilst I'm not normally a fan of paying kickers, we're in our window and he's a fan favourite. Strikes me as someone who would fit right in with what Nagy is building.
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

I was a huge Gould fan but I understood why the Bears parted ways with him at the time. But, we're really a kicker away from going at least to the second round of the playoffs if not further. If Gould was here last year I'm 99% positive he nails that kick. If they can get him on a discount for 2-3 years I would be ok with that.

The thing I can see holding the Bears back is his kickoffs... That alone might warrant a discount.
”Damn -- Khalil Mack had another strip sack?” Gruden asked rhetorically, shaking his head at the Oakland Raiders assistant coaches in his midst. “Are you ... kidding me?”

The thing to also consider, is that the Bears just brought in 3 kickers. On the surface that might not mean anything, but I can see the Bears at least seeing what they have in those guys in minicamp before making a trade for Gould.

When you bumped this thread I scrolled through it thinking I would find me screaming and hollering. I remember being very upset and my daughter who I raised as a Bears fan was heartbroken. Robbie was so important during a time when our D dominated and our Offense was meh. I was surprised that I didnt vent here. I guess the alcohol worked lol.

I would love Robbie back if its for a 6th or 7th next year and a very friendly contract. I would be afraid of wanting him so bad then him declining lol. Thats just pure pessimistic Bears fan being afraid lol.

My thoughts are also based on who we have signed and not being impressed with them at all.

Screw it get Robbie back! lol

I am so wishy washy lol

Not sure what else he would say, but relevant to the topic anyway.

There's no guarantee, either, that Robbie Gould is going to be as good as he ever was in Chicago.

I'm glad us cutting him made him work harder at his craft, but what makes me think he won't come here and slack off again?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him here if the price is right and it doesn't cost us a draft pick.

I'm going with... If Robbie Gould comes available... and I keep hearing in the media that off the record, Robbie wants out of SF in the worst way, so he can be closer to his family, who lives in Chicago... Ryan Pace would dump 2 of the signed PKs immediately and bring the leftover to camp as purely injury protection. It would be the no brainer of all no brainers.

Even Gould at 90% of his ability is 130% better than the steaming piles we've brought in since cutting him.

With Gould Off Limits Until Further Notice, Bears Sign Baron And Expand Their Kicking Competition
It’s going to be fascinating to see who is kicking for the Bears when they face the Packers to start the 2019 season.

While they will continue to play the long game for Robbie Gould, the Bears are going to unusual lengths to line up an inexpensive alternative to fill their void at kicker. They would love to identify an option that would spare them the expense and difficulty of the deal-making necessary to land Gould or another proven specialist.

Cody Parkey, who was released after missing a game-winning field goal attempt in the 16-15 playoff loss to the Eagles, is due $3.5 million after earning $5.5 million in salary and bonus last season. He carries a $4,062,500 cap hit for 2019. To replace him with Gould or another veteran would represent the most a team has ever committed to the kicking position.

Would the Bears go to such lengths to assure special teams will not hinder a team with Super Bowl potential? That’s unclear for now, as the 49ers say they aren’t willing to move Gould, who has demanded a trade.

The Bears hope they can find an attractive option among a large group of kickers they have signed to non-guaranteed contracts. General Manager Ryan Pace said he considered kickers in the draft but in the end opted only to sign San Diego State’s John Baron II after the draft ended on Saturday. He’s the fourth recent college product signed since Parkey was cut.

“Maybe it’s a little unorthodox to have four kickers out there,’’ Pace told reporters after the draft. “We don’t care. Let’s increase the competition and let’s let the whole thing battle out. We’re unbiased on it. Our eyes are wide open. If we need to add a veteran, we’re going to do whatever we can to get that situation right. We know the importance of it, and that’s why we’re attacking it in such an aggressive manner.’’

The Bears will actually work with at least eight kickers in workouts before training camp opens. They had previously signed Elliott Fry, Chris Blewitt and Redford Jones to non-guaranteed contracts after tryouts, and in addition to Baron they also reached agreements to bring four other kickers in for post-draft looks.

That group includes two of the top kickers in the Big Ten last year, Minnesota’s Emmit Carpenter and Purdue’s Spencer Evans. Minnesota State’s Casey Bednarski, a wild card who hit a 63-yarder for the Division II school and has made from 70 in practice, and McNeese State’s Alex Kjellsten, who was blocked by another field-goal kicker on his team but stood out on punts and kickoffs, also will be in the mix.

I do understand people clamouring for him to come back...but it’s based purely on having had our dreams shattered by someone completely inept.

I’m a big believer in never going back. There’s no guarantee things would be the same again if Gould came back, and people have short memories...he did cost us games the season we let him go. Yes he’d been phenomenal in the past and seems to have Chicago in his heart. But He’d lost his mojo and was costing a fair whack. Letting him go at the time was the right thing to do.

It sounds like a nice story to bring him back and he kicks the OT game winner to take us to the Superbowl.

But I can’t see that happening. And the cost isn’t worth it.

Welcome!

However, this sounds like words from someone who hasn't seen the latest chapter of the Gould story. Getting cut made him reexamine his game, refocus and produce at the highest level since then. There's a very good reason why SF franchise tagged him. Further, his family has been in Chicago even after his contract was terminated. So there's every reason to believe that he'd give Pace a home town discount. You may be right that it isn't happening. But wanting Gould back isn't just sentimentality.

Even so, welcome to our board! :-)

I'm gonna have to agree with the newbie here. There is no reason to go back to Gould, except sentimentality. If we can find a young kicker that is 90% as good as Gould is right now, we would still be ahead, because we wouldn't be committing $8M+ to a kicker. A kicker. You can't do that in today's NFL. There is so much you can do in the NFL with $3M - $4M in cap space. By signing Gould, you'd be throwing that away.

Subsequently, I believe that is the exact reason they went out and traded for Piniero. He fits the mold of what I'm talking about perfectly. But I'm confident that he has the potential to be 110% of what Gould has been.

I thought the Eddy Pineiro trade was interesting. I do think he's the best kicking talent they've brought in and has the inside track of winning the job. He's young and has a big leg, seems accurate too. Has a soccer background and did win the Oakland kicking job last year before he had a random groin injury that landed him on IR.

Thanks for the welcome, and you Mikefive. I’m not actually that new; registered years ago but forgot my login details!!! I’ve observed every day since then so feel like I know certain posters anyway; apologies if that seems a bit voyeuristic

I guess my point wasn’t about talent levels of players; more that the guarantee isn’t there, no matter how good Gould was once he left. Parkey was good once. And he might be again. The big issue here is we’re gonna be paying for Parkey AND a new kicker - if that had been Gould, it wouldn’t have been cheap. Maybe I’m biased because I remember wanting him gone after he’d missed those gimmes the year he went (fickle I know) but he’s 37 and been kicking in more favourable conditions since he left. The list of players that return to their first clubs, in any sport, and are as successful on their second stint will not be very long (and I have absolutely no statistical analysis to support that claim)

Anyway, with the signing of Piniero it might suggest the FO agree with me so...

I kind of sort of agree with the never going back idea...but meh its not conclusive. I dont base my feelings on Gould because of Parkey. I was so angry and so upset when Gould was let go. Not only as just a Bears fan for me, but also because as my daughter grew as a teenager she loved him and we sat and watched him many times be our go to guy. We were devasted when he was let go and then even worse when he became a forty whiner ( father in laws favorite team) and now that I live with my inlaws and take care of them I have to hear that stupid shit about how our kicker is his kicker now even tho he cant remember Goulds name . so yah....

Would i like him back? Hell yah, but not at the crazy price of 3 to 5 million while we are still paying Parkey.

At this stage all my hopes and dreams are with Piniero

If Gould can get out of the deal with SF then I see Pace jumping on it... If not I don't think Pace will trade anything for him unless we're game 5 in and whoever we have at kicker misses 3-4 already.

Having a vet like Gould who knows what it's like to kick here who's had great success in the past would make most fans feel good and more confident we don't see a disaster again like last year. Would be nice seeing him finish out his career here in Chicago.

Having said that the young guy Pineiro is an interesting option. Guy's leg is ridiculous... A strong leg like that you would think he could dive a ball through the wind in Chicago.

I would feel a ton better about whomever we had kicking if Dave Toub was still here. That one still stings, possibly more than cutting gould.

Last I heard, Blewitt nailed his kick and Piñeiro went just right.
