I don't know much about him, except that Broncos fans all day their entire offensive line sucks. And he was their understudy.

And they sign another TE. Shaheen and McManis to IR.

Interesting. Well, that's the end of Shaheen's career here and it looks like we're taking a free look at Eric Saubert since Dax Raymond is already on the PS.

This one hurts because I had high hopes for Shaheen. I remember being perpetually pissed off that Fox didn't establish a rhythm early on between Mitch and Shaheen. Shaheen's injury history obviously didn't help that either.

Hopefully a lesson has been learned that TEs shouldn't be drafted in the second round.

Yeah man... I never liked how stiff he was and how he always seemed to fall down after any catch he made. At the end of the day, he just flat-out sucked here and reading between the lines it seems like Nagy didn't care for his lack of preparation.

Oh well. On to the next one.

I just think Shaheen never had the "want to". He didn't look like he was in really good shape. His balance sucked. And he was injury prone. A lot of that can be shored up with the right workout regimen, and having the desire to be excellent. I never saw that out of him. You can coach how to be excellent, but not the why.

I sure don't agree that TEs shouldn't be drafted in R2. Small school projects, OK.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Go back to leather helmets, NFL.

Yeah, the track record of early TEs was worse than I expected, but I still wouldn't write it off completely:

2 10 42 Rob Gronkowski
1 31 31 Greg Olsen
1 6 6 Vernon Davis

I did a little more checking – certainly not the definitive way to analyze the position, but it was something not-meaningless that I could do fairly quickly.

All Pro TEs for the last 10 yrs and draft round.
First by year, then just unique individuals from that time period.

2018 Kelce 3 Ertz 2 Kittle 5
2017 Gronk 2 Kelce 3
2016 Kelce 3 Olsen 1
2015 Gronk 2 Olsen 1
2014 Gronk 2
2013 Graham 3 Davis 1
2012 Gonzalez 1 Witten 3 Gronk 2
2011 Gronk 2 Graham 3
2010 Witten 3 Gates UD Lewis 1
2009 Clark 1 Gates UD Witten 3

Avg 2.74

Olsen 1
Davis 1
Gonzalez 1
Lewis 1
Clark 1
Ertz 2
Gronk 2
Kelce 3
Graham 3
Witten 3
Kittle 5
Gates 8
avg 2.58

Granted, you don’t need to have an All Pro at the position, but this look makes it feel like R2-3 is the sweet spot and hoping for another Kittle isn’t terribly realistic.
If anyone has the enthusiasm for a more intensive analysis, have at it. I’d be interested to see how often drafting TEs on Day 3 works out.

Put in some more effort and looking at the 32 top TEs in % of team offensive snaps taken.

Of the 32 the round breakdown was:
1) 5
2) 8
3) 8
4) 1
5) 4
6) 2
7) 0
UD) 4

It is possible to get starters late (11/32 from R4 or later), but most come from 1-3.
It still seems like from this look R2-3 is the place to be mining.

I didn't segment by types of TE (which would be hard), but I do feel like move TEs can be found a little later than other types, though.
