Woo hoo! That was expected. And for considerably less than what I expected. I wonder if there are incentive bonuses in that.
Yeah, he came in handy week 1

Solid CYA option for starting SS if the draft doesn't present one to you.
Still need depth at that spot. But if this is the market, we can probably get a decent vet at the minimum.

haha...
but I have PLENTY more coverage lapses from his first few seasons in reserve...
so you'll get out-dueled if this continues, Yogi...
unless preseason counts? He's been heroic then...
but for 1.4 I'm not gonna die on that hillock
let's hope he isn't pressed into service

yeah, i get that money's getting tight, we've got a couple of holes and little draft capital, but deon's a player you can only cover up for so long. one year at 1.4 mil confirms the league's opinion of him. hoping a little bit that we've got a plan that doesnt involve him starting.

I’ll show you plenty of clips of Kwit getting roasted early in his career but you had no problem complaining that Pace didn’t pay him 7 mill.Drone7 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 11:51 am haha...

I don't understand all the Deon Bush love.
He's a liability waiting to happen out there.

At least we have more than 1 S on the roster now. Can't complain too much about $1.4M. But yeah... Hope there's another starting answer.RustyTrubisky wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 11:54 am yeah, i get that money's getting tight, we've got a couple of holes and little draft capital, but deon's a player you can only cover up for so long. one year at 1.4 mil confirms the league's opinion of him. hoping a little bit that we've got a plan that doesnt involve him starting.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

We also have Kentrell Brice for what it's worth. Draft a safety and the best of those three wins the starting spot for the yearMikefive wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 12:44 pmAt least we have more than 1 S on the roster now. 2023 Preseason Downside prediction:
5-6 wins, never really healthy all season, a constant shuffling.
We're potentially in a position to draft in the Top 5 again, depending on the Carolina team, and probably have a low-teens (or better) pick ourselves.

It's a desperation stopgap.
Cheaper than I expected (2-2.5), so that's a plus.

His pff grade has went up every year. Limited sample last year but it was over 80. 76.6 in 2018.
It could be worse.

Good signing for the money, familiar with the team + system. I hope he isn't our starter but has value as a reserve, and is getting paid reserve money. Nothing not to like here.

Oh, I don't think I'd get outdueled on Deon Bush at all. You know why? Because, with the exception of the Graham TD, evidence of him being a liability in coverage is nearly nonexistent since his rookie year.
Here are three highlights of the three starts he's had since he was a rookie--in '18 after Eddie went down. Yeah, he's no EJack, but he wasn't much of a liability either. Remember, these are highlights, so if he's being exposed in any meaningful way, it should show up on them.

In this start against the Niners, I noticed him being exposed in coverage once.

Against the Vikings he had one PI call that would have been a great play by him if he hadn't caught the receiver's helmet coming across.
The final clip is the Eagle playoff game. He actually plays really well in this one with some good hits around the goal line and some good finishing tackles as a center fielder. He misses one tackle in this one, but also stops the Eagle's two point conversion. Other than what I mentioned, show me in any of these clips where he was a liability.
Now remember, in all these clips, he's playing Eddie's spot as center fielder. I think he'd be even more effective playing as an in the box safety. Watching these clips, I have no idea why he gets such a bad rap here on his play. Amos gets exposed in coverage far more than Bush does.

I mean it was Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Graham. It isn't like Bush gave up 4 TDs to Mitch Trubisky. What did the Bear offense have to score to win that game? Bush gets full on 100% pass on that.
2023 Chicago Bears... emerging from a long hibernation, and hungry!
It's been other games too. I've watched him.
Not an instinctive player. He gets by with recovery speed and decent toughness.
Like I said, I'm not going to make a big deal about bringing back a role player at a shallow position that also plays STs decently.
I would have preferred bringing in someone with more upside, but they don't even have a viable starter signed.
If he's pressed into a starter role or used in a big nickel package, I don't expect too many bad plays with a very good surrounding cast...the problem would come if injuries affected the pass rush.

I think that would be a problem, or at least more of one, with whoever is back there.
