I thought this would happen earlier because of his cost. Good ST player, he will find work.

Maybe Shaheen has figured out special teams this offseason.

I can’t figure out who we will keep. Kmet and Harris seem set as the two Y TEs, and Graham is a lock for starting U. Shaheen and Holtz are both Y types, and the other guys are just garbage IMO. I don’t see the Graham backup anywhere.

I remain hopeful that Horsted worked out like crazy in corona isolation in the offseason, and is that guy. Until I'm proved wrong - which is likely. I'm allocate my baseless hope to him versus Shaheen. lol

I don't think this says anything about Shaheen. Shaheen is a bust. The Bears are assuming they can more easily replace Braunecker's contributions on special teams, plus they've got enough fucking tight ends to sort out as it is.

hahahaha! You might be right man, I don't see anyone else who can be a primary receiver and downfield threat like that position demands. I'm not missing it on Shaheen am I? I know he's sucked and been hurt and all, but could he possibly play U if healthy? I always saw him more as a Y, but have little to base that on.

Nobody really ever mentions Eric Saubert.

He's a 5th round pick and has survived 3 years in the league on his own merit (Clark has 0, Horstead has 1/2 yr, Shaheen is around only because he was a high pick).

I don't know what he's played before or is viewed as, though. He's medium size with 4.7 speed and mostly special teams experience. Anyone know?

I really don't know anything about him, other than he's a Chicago boy. So I poked around on the interwebs.

This is funny:

Not so good of reviews on Saubert's pass-catching skill. Sounds like stone hands.

I'm going to guess Pace was just throwing everything he could against the wall, and Saubert won't stick. Even if he does improve his hands, they still won't be close to Horsted's (which seem incredible). And other than that they're pretty comparable in terms of not being notable blockers. Saubert is a bit faster and maybe more physically imposing, but Horsted might be a better functional athlete. Two sport star athlete even in Ivy League is pretty good.

Braunecker was good on ST and could fill in here and there when TE's were dropping like flies around him....but he's got some concussion issues, so I'm sure that played into it as well.

Kind of sad as I always liked Braunecker, but okay with it.

Gotta think this secures a Ryan Nall roster spot, which I'm totally okay with.

I have always like Nall. Would be nice to see him be the next ST stud.

I read that he had just gotten engaged to Sydney Golic, Mike Golic's daughter - she apparently worked for the Bears for awhile.

Convenient; he also worked for the Bears for a while.

In a year of Unknown’s I’d have liked to have kept this known commodity. You know he can play some TE to an average level but you also know he can play to a decent ST level. Not sexy but ST can win and lose games too ya know
Have a great day

I was a Brauney fan too.
I'm gone. Have a nice life. I'm clearly not wanted here.

They must not have viewed his TE play as average, but far below average. I’d agree with that. And he had plenty of time to show he was better than that.

Plus cutting him when they did gives him a chance to sign elsewhere before camp, so it was a courtesy move. He’s a pure ST player for whoever signs him IMO.

He had his shot, I’m happy to give another young player their shot.

Braunecker has pretty good hands, so I'll also guess it was injuries and $ that sealed his fate. Holtz can do everything he can do better for half the cost.

I guess I just need to get over it, but it looks to me like we're going to have 1 U and 3 Y TE's this year. Holtz is a Y for sure. Maybe we keep 5 and your boy Horsted makes it as backup U?

I think Holtz makes it mostly as a FB, moreso than as a Y
I would expect someone else gets a backup U spot (for a total of 5, if you count Holtz)

While I like Ben - for a "great STer" he pretty much cost us the game against the Patriots two years ago that was the difference in a first round bye vs the date with the Eagles.
