I whipped through a 2022 sim very quickly. Partly curious, partly as a joke.

Still, I may need an intervention.

Lol, I am going to wait until about half way through the season before even looking at those sites. I do not even know who any of those dudes are, but half the fun of these things is looking up highlight videos of people you don't know.

Hey I am right with you Moriarty. No better time to start looking at 2022 than when you've still got the 2021 draft fresh in your head!

Do you have a feel for which position groups are strong or weak in 2022? That's the question I usually start off with--besides team needs of course!)

Edge/DL is supposed to be particularly strong. Secondary is looking pretty deep too.

Hopefully Kyle Hamilton gets recorded punching a baby in public and the Bears can get him in the 2nd round.

Traded down twice in the 3rd to pick up some later picks. I literally just took the highest rated guy since have not really looked at anyone. Seems my last three picks are rated WAY too low.

42. John Metchie III WR Alabama

88. Chris Hinton DT Michigan

106. Emil Ekiyor OG Alabama

142. Trae Barry TE Jacksonville State

174. DaShaun White LB Oklahoma

205. Reggie Roberson WR SMU

219. Al Blades Jr. CB Miami-Fl

lol, yeah, i'm in love with Olave too... Although I was watching Darnell Mooney Highlights today and fantasizing about having a qb that could hit him in stride. Both Mitch's and Foles' ball placement was not doing him any favors and now I'm even more delirious.

I'm reading that CB, OT, and Edge look strong, but also that it's even harder to tell than usual because of the COVID disruptions to college football. Anyway, CB and Edge are likely need positions for the Bears.

Useful article on the strengths of the 2022 draft (spoilers: defense, at least at the top of the first):

Did this without looking at prior picks - got one repeater already.

3-74. Alec Lindstrom C Boston College

5-142. Will Mallory TE Miami-Fl
6'5 245 4.65, poised to breakout now that Brevin Jordan is gone

6-174. Jack Sanborn ILB Wisconsin
6'0.5 232 4.75, 3rd year starting

44: R2 P12 DL Jordan Davis - Georgia
6'5 330 5.1, All-SEC 2nd Team
While I'm sure anyone reading this will probably view this as an overreaction to Goldman's absence, it was really much more about the other options. You can sometimes get good R2 CB, but not consistently. It was picked over. TE/WR didn't inspire me with any gamebreakers.

76: R3 P12 C Colin Newell - Iowa State
6'3 300 5.2, All-Big12 1st, 3rd yr starting C
I think it's likely Mustipher isn't sufficient and that Daniels will get offered way too much somewhere else.

154: R5 P12 WR Ronnie Bell - Michigan
6'0 190 4.45, 3rd yr starting
Fast, returned punts a little

191: R6 P12 TE Will Mallory - Miami
6'5 245 4.65
Poised to breakout now that Brevin Jordan is gone

231: R7 P12 ILB Noah Taylor - Virginia
6'4 225 4.7, 3rd yr starting

Not really looking for 'steals' (partly because boards are too rough and partly because I don't know all the positions anyway), so hitting the same positions/names often.
Hopefully, some new boards go up or these get updated soon.

44: R2 P12 CB Andrew Booth Jr. - Clemson
6'0 195 4.45, 2nd yr starting
This time CB wasn't depleted

76: R3 P12 OLB Christopher Allen - Alabama
6'3 250 4.65, 2nd yr starting
But TE/WR and OL didn't have much to offer at this point. Quinn very close to getting launched as a massive mistake.

154: R5 P12 ILB Isaac Slade-Matautia - Oregon
6'2 235 4.6, 3rd yr starting
You could make a case for ideally needing 3 ILBs for 2022

191: R6 P12 TE Will Mallory - Miami
6'5 245 4.65, Poised to breakout now that Brevin Jordan is gone
Even if Kmet does develop, there's zero to complement him with right now

231: R7 P12 WR Jalen Virgil - Appalachian State
6'1 205 4.35, 5th yr contributing, 1st (probably) starting, 3-time member of The Athletic’s “Freaks List” (3 overall, 1 on offense in 2020) based on his athleticism

44: R2 P12 G Kenyon Green - Texas A&M
6'4 325 5.1, 3rd yr starting incl as true freshman
CB, OT, WR were picked over. This was the highest rated still on the board. You can improve on Daniels and gain a comp pick.

76: R3 P12 TE Cade Otton - Washington
6'5 240 4.75, 2nd yr starting, was a monster in a 2020 mini-season of 4 games
The 2nd highest still on the board. Kmet/Otton/James would be a formidable unit.

144: R5 P2 C James Empey - BYU
6'3 305 5.2, 4th yr starting
Am I going soft? I assumed Mustipher works out this time and just took a backup.

154: R5 P12 ILB Isaac Slade-Matautia - Oregon
6'2 235 4.6, 3rd yr starting
With size and speed, can probably play either side

191: R6 P12 OT John Ojukwu - Boise State
6'5 310 5.2, 2.5 yrs starting
A backup who could potentially fill in adequately at LT, if necessary

It is so funny because we agree on a lot but see the team through such a different lens.

I see little conspicuous priority for OG, C at this time. TE is likely a need, even with Jesse James on board and potentially someone who would extend at a reasonable cost. IF they draft a guy like Otton, I can't see James coming back. He's on a one-year deal to prove he belongs somewhere besides a #3 TE.

I see the priorities for the '22 draft being:
- ILB for sure
- WR for sure
- TE likely
- OT maybe if Ifedi leaves or Jenkins turns out to only be a RT (there's really no evidence of that right now)
- RB will always be a need, as big extension deals for RBs almost always disappoint. Use them for 4 years and then move on. Even Monty.

I see it similarly as you IE
#1 WR - Lots of dudes on one year deals
#2 ILB - DT is likely gone after the season, and no one else has shown jack shit
#3 DL - Hicks is getting along in age, and depth isn't the best
#4 OLB - Quinn is going to have to be phenomenal to stay past this season and we don't know what Trevis Gipson will turn into
#5 S - It's more of a need than CB to me because there are a lot of young bodies at CB and really only EJ at safety after the season

Yeah I agree on OLB as well as a top priority. For performance and contract and depth reasons.

WR is very hard to tell. But if you sign ARob (which I'm betting they will be too afraid not to), then you have him, Mooney, let's say 1 of Byrd/Goodwin, Newsome, maybe Ridley, probably Wims. It's pretty full. Yeah, you can get better with more resource, but you can say that all over.

OLB. Could definitely be a problem. But you can't do much for a premium position with any pick besides maybe your R2, most likely.

CB. Could definitely be a problem. If Trufant doesn't rebound - or does and gets too much interest - you've got midgets and crap behind him. And again, you can't do much for a premium position with any pick besides your R2, most likely.

S doesn't bother me. DHC and Bush always come back. And if not, there's lots of similar depth. And I like how SS has been adequate with rotating cheap vets.

DL, eh. Sure, I'd like 3 Good+ going forward. But I don't think that's resource realistic. Two and one adequate is alright.

RB. I agree that you just churn through and wish them well. I'm sure some people will have fits over it, but that's wise RB management. I really subscribe to the old Denver philosophy of 'build yourself a quality line and then you can put any competent back out there and have them look good'. I'm fine with drafting a new one in 2023, but not dying to do it in 22. They're awfully plug n play right away. And Herbert might even suffice, if he can handle more touches.

OL. This is where you make everyone else better. And Jenkins & Mustipher are big question marks. Daniels & Ifedi are both FAs, and if they perform well enough, I don't think you want to pay both. And you have no backup C on your roster - except for your starting Gs, which means 2 major changes any time your C gets hurt. That would leave 1 hole, 2 maybes, and a backup, at best, by my count.

2-42 Josh Jobe CB Alabama
6'0 190 4.5, 2nd yr starting
Everyone's excited about what we have, but I'm not sold yet

3-74 Jarrett Patterson C/LT Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 2 yrs C 1 yr LT
He can replace Mustipher again (or we can panic and play him at LT, yay!)

5-133 Brandon Smith ILB Penn State
6'2 240 4.55, 2nd yr starting
5-142 Isaac Slade-Matautia ILB Oregon/SMU
6'0 235 4.6, 3rd yr starting
I hate our ILB corps. 1 bad starter, 1 soon to be wildly overpriced starter, depth is old or terrible. And it's something you can improve with Day 3 picks.

6-174 John Ridgeway DL ISU/Arkansas
6'5 325 5.1, 4th yr starting
Assuming that Hicks goes

OK, Moriarty... I'm now on board with drafting OL with the top 2 picks. But this one needs to be a LT. If Jenkins comes back fine - put him on the right.

Borom can compete with the new LT and Jenkins, be the swing or even move inside. But LT is now (IMO) the top need.

There's a decent chance you can pull off a starting C (or maybe G) in R3, but the odds of getting a serious LT prospect at 45-50 are pretty bad. This past year was a real anomaly. And, I would imagine so many OTs coming out in 21 is just going to make the 2022 crop thinner than usual, if anything. :(

I'm already resigned to the free agency route, which I generally don't like. There's only one quality option for every team interested - and he's over 30 and may not even hit the market. But there are a number of adequate older stopgaps. Penciling in Reiff, Fischer, or Brown for 10Mish and 2-3 years.

What the heck, here goes nothin'.

Fanspeak, latest board.

2.11 Perrion Winfrey, DE, Oklahoma. He projects, however optimistically, as a beast. I know that we'll have bigger needs, but to me the most underappreciated need of all is to preserve your strengths when you can. Our interior three might be our strongest unit, but by the end of the season we'll need a succession plan for Hicks. It's either that or find out what happens with an average interior DL. Which would not be pretty.

3.11 Owen Pappoe, ILB, Auburn. Man, it'd be fun to watch him and Smith run around.

5.1 Ronnie Bell, WR, Michigan. Not an overwhelming athlete, but from what I've seen a darned good WR with some size and route-running chops. Which we could use.

5.11 Chase Allen, TE, Iowa St. I've thought for a couple of seasons now that he's a huge sleeper, the kind of guy who does what he needs to during the season, gets his mechanical engineering degree or whatever, and then floors people at the combine by testing off the charts. Kinda like a guy from down I-80 a few years ago. Plus, he survived getting hit by a car, so there's that. He won't test like Kittle because he's, what, four inches taller, but Allen looks super-sneaky athletic and seems to be a good blocker.

6.11 Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn St. Might be more of an athlete than a difference-making leader in the secondary right now, but that's fine. He's got all the tools he needs, and he should be a good STer while he works for run on the D. In any case, I love good safety play, and I think we've got a DC who can do wonderfully destructive things with a good safety rotation.

No OL because...well, what the fuck will we have by then? Could be pretty good, could be irredeemable within the space of one year.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

Did a rare (this early) tradedown, 43--57+89
If I'm doing a needs-heavy draft, I'm pretty settled on the positions, for the time being.

2-57 Josh Jobe CB Alabama
6'0 190 4.5, 2nd yr starting
Update: No one's excited about what we have

3-75 Alec Lindstrom C Boston College
6'3 290 5.3, 3rd yr starting, All-ACC 1st, bloodlines

3-89 Payton Wilson ILB North Carolina State
6'3 240 4.65, 2nd yr starting
5-133 Henry To'o To'o ILB Alabama
6'2 230 4.55, 2nd yr starting

5-143 Travis Jones DL Connecticut
6'4 335 5.25, 3rd yr starting

6-175 Master Teague III RB Ohio State
5'11 225 4.45, 2nd yr starting
Not sure about his receiving, but a runner like this in R6?

One of the ways I judge a Bears' season is how soon I start looking at the draft. In 2017, it was the first quarter of the year. In 2018, not till after the season. 2019 and 2020, within 4 games. I'm hoping Borom rises to the level of an NFL LT sometime this season and Jenkins steps in next year. It's going to have to be a CB in round 2 the way things look like they're going to play out with the secondary.

After the Rams game, I'm thinking it's already time.
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

New board
Fanspeak Buffalo FAMBase

Had to improvise a lot.
Unfortunately, I think that's largely because he had better (more reasonably accurate) ratings on the CBs, causing good ones not to fall to me.

2-43 G Kenyon Green - Texas A&M
Not a deliberate target, but CB, LT, WR just weren't happening. A steal on value, better than Daniels and cheaper. Saved $ can go to CB or OT.

3-75 FS Brandon Joseph - Northwestern
Biggest need positions terrible again. June 1 cutting Ejax and saving more money with this.

5-143 DL Cory Durden - NC State
Some insurance for 2 FAs and Goldman being iffy.

5-153 ILB Terrel Bernard - Baylor

6-190 C James Empey - BYU
Since I didn't replace Mustipher, just took a backup. No more of this "our C backups are starters" crap (especially with Daniels ousted by Green).

Did it again. This time the cards fell more cooperatively.

2-39 CB Andrew Booth Jr. - Clemson
6'0 195 4.45, 2nd yr starting

3-71 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 2 yrs C 1 yr LT
Mustipher is a nice backup

5-144 OT Trevor Penning - Northern Iowa
6'7 320 5.2, 3yrs starting
I think he's going to rise past this point, but it would be nice to have 3 young Ts with genuine upside

5-149 OLB Jermaine Johnson - Florida State
6'4 260 4.6, first yr starting
Exploding after transferring to FSU

6-186 ILB Ellis Brooks - Penn State
6'0 240 4.7, 2 yrs starting

Is safety a priority yet?

Well, I hit that in 1 of the 2 new ones I did. But there's just so many other obvious fires, it's hard to manage.

I'm comfortable with the stream of 1yr deals for most of the safety jobs - just not starting FS. But I also think Eddie probably stays 1 more year, unless there's a house-cleaning at the top. And I'd like to see DHC get a trial, before burning really scarce draft resources. Although thinking ahead and evaluating players really isn't a strong suit of Nagy's - especially when he isn't on very solid ground right now.

Based purely on his contract alone, I would expect Jackson is there through the 2023 season - he does have a 11 million fully guaranteed at the beginning of the 2022 league year though. I also think DHC has earned more PT based on flashes he's shown over the last half of the 2020 season. Still, age is creeping up on these guys. Jackson turns 28 in December, which isn't exactly old, but Bush and DHC will be 30 after next season. Sure, they don't have a lot of miles on them (Bush has had some concussions) so the Bears might be able to squeeze 2022 out of one of them.
