Fanspeak FAMBase again. Just too many egregious errors on others right now.

2-39 G Kenyon Green - Texas A&M
6'4 325 5.1, 3rd yr starting incl as true freshman
Fuck your OL neglect, Ryan Pace. Daniels goes. Maybe he even scores us a comp.

3-71 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 2 yrs C 1 yr LT
Fuck your OL neglect, Ryan Pace. The most important thing we can do for Fields (aside from ditching Nagy, obviously) is build a line that will allow plays to develop.

5-146 ILB Devin Lloyd - Utah
6'2 230 4.75, 3rd yr starting, SN 2nd team AA

5-149 RB Leddie Brown - West Virginia
5'11 210 4.6, 2nd yr starting, Big12 1st team

6-186 ILB Isaac Slade-Matautia - Oregon/SMU
6'0 235 4.6, 3rd yr starting

Same deal as Mori's.

2.39 - Kenyon Green, G, TAMU. He probably shouldn't be here, but if he is, terrific. Also gives us a couple more options at C.

3.77 - Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn St. Didn't like any of the non-guard o-linemen. This is probably as low as he'll go in the actual draft. Our safeties are just depressing, moreso than our CBs. They all need to go, and this is a nice start.

5.146 - DeMarvion Overshown, ILB, Texas. Again, didn't like the value on the o-line. This guy next to Smith could turn the middle of the field into a Cuisinart for opposing offenses.

5.149 - Perrion Winfrey, DE, Oklahoma. This is even sillier than Green in the second. Maybe take it as a token that a good DE would look good here, even if a borderline first-rounder won't fall this far without, oh, I dunno, breaking his back or something.

6.186 - Tyler Vrabel, OT, Boston College. As prospective swing tackles go, not a bad investment.

Yeah, our offense needs help, and Mooney's the only WR I have any strong feelings about retaining, but the entire roster is so poorly constructed that I just wanted future starters here. This lets us lose Gipson, Hicks, our choice of terrible OTs and one of Mustipher or Daniels after this year, Jackson and Trevathan after next. Low-hanging fruit, but it's progress from where I'm sitting.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

Traded down a lot. Not deliberately, just consistently underwhelmed at what was there on my turns (except for a couple wildly unrealistic things I skipped, as always).

2-57 Jarrett Patterson C Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 2 yrs C 1 yr LT

3-76 Henry To'o To'o ILB Tennessee/Alabama
6'2 230 4.55, 2nd yr starting

3-101 Kenneth Walker RB Wake Forest/Michigan State
5'9 210 4.45, 1* yr starting
Exploding after transferring and becoming the man. Gets a year to grow into the starter here.

5-146 JT Daniels QB Georgia
When you have 6 picks in less than 2 rounds time, a developmental QB is the kind of luxury you can take.

5-150 Phidarian Mathis DT Alabama
6'3 312 5.4, 2 yrs starting
In the 2nd or 3rd tier of 'line depth' options. Surprised this is the first time I've taken him.

5-177 Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu RG/RT Oregon
6'5 315 5.3, 2 yrs starting (+JC)
Wanted to hit G and/or T earlier, but just didn't work out

6-187 Kolby Harvell-Peel SS Oklahoma State
6'0 207 4.6, 3 yrs starting
Also would have liked to hit S earlier, but that wasn't there, either. Should hit 10+ picks in 3 yrs.

6-191 Jermaine Johnson OLB Florida State
6'4 260 4.6, first yr starting
Exploding after transferring to FSU. On pace for 10+ sacks.

6-218 Isaac Slade-Matautia ILB Oregon/SMU
6'0 235 4.6, 3rd yr starting
Can someone make Iyiegbuniwe go away already?

2-64 Trevor Penning OT | Northern Iowa Northern IowaTRADE
6'7 320 5.2, 3yrs starting
Knew last time I took him that would be too low. You hope out of Jenkins/Borom/Penning you can get 2 starters and a backup.

3-84 Brandon Smith ILB | Penn State Penn State
6'2 240 4.55, 2nd yr starting

3-96 Kenneth Walker III RB | Michigan State Michigan StateTRADE
5'9 210 4.45, 1* yr starting
Exploding after transferring and becoming the man. Gets a year to grow into the starter here.
Really starting to like this option, when I get a pick in this range from tradedown.

5-165 Jalen Pitre S | Baylor Baylor
6'0 200 4.45
LB/S can definitely play SS, has the athleticism for FS, but maybe not the skillset

6-200 Charleston Rambo WR/KR | Oklahoma/Miami (FL)
6'0 185 4.45, 3rd yr starting
Simulator gipped us - only 1 R5. Oh, well.

Traded down in R2.
Partly because drafting only 5 is boring and doesn't address much. But it also makes sense for a team that has been short on picks year after year after year.

Didn't come out perfect, but still love the outcomes here.

Did one without trades. OMG is the cupboard bare with picks. Then with the Fields trade the Giants right now have a Top 5 pick. SMH.

The OL needs are obvious. To me, a late round T can be moved inside to play G. Went BPA for special teams in round 6.

I was oddly excited that Walker was available in round 3. He's a home run hitter and I'd love to platoon him with Monty and then see if he's good enough to take the reigns when Monty hits FA and signs like a $8M per year deal someplace else.

We need tons of new players, and we don't have many draft picks. One way around that problem is to take a longer view of things, and just call next year's draft a do-what-you-can deal, with lots of trade-downs and a serious effort to re-stock the pantry for future seasons. Here's what that might look like, on NFLMDD:

Trades:

2.41 to Cleveland
for
2.48
4.120
5.159

2.48 to Buffalo
for
2.58
2023 third-rounder

2.58 to Jacksonville
for
3.83
5.154
2023 third-rounder (JAX)

3.72 - Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn St.
Not going to find an elite CB here, but Brisker could well develop into an elite safety, and just the kind we need.

3.83 - Ricky Stromberg, C, Arkansas
He's had some injuries this year, but he's played through them and played well, from what I can tell. He'd be another young center prospect (Daniels was what, 20 to start his rookie year?), but he's got experience at guard, too.

4.120 - DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas
I like the idea of building on strength, and this is a chance to pair Roquan with another LB who covers a ton of ground. It'll be like running a 3-5.

5.151 - Tyler Smith, OL, Tulsa
Another young OL prospect, this time a born OT. Not sure how a guy like this is supposed to fall to the fifth, but I wondered that about George Kittle, too. This might close the revolving door of bad FAs at tackle.

5.154 - Cory Durden, DE, NC St.
If I'd liked the value at WR, I'd have chosen one in any round here. Yet again, I like another guy better than any of the receivers available. Durden's experienced pocket collapser who'd have a chance to step right in at DE.

5.159 - Joseph Ngata, WR, Clemson
Finally! He's a late bloomer and has a bit of an injury history, though I don't see him going this low. Perfect prospect for Robinson's role.

6.187 - Kyler Gordon, CB/Nickel, Washington
Could've taken a flyer on another offensive position, but fixing the line was job 1. I especially like that Murray fits the mold of a large nickel. And that he's three or four rounds too low here, but that's the nature of these things. Kyu Blue Kelly's avaialble, too, though he'll probably go higher as well.

Fanspeak - FAMBase

A depressingly fast no trade version

38: R2 P6 CB Roger McCreary - Auburn
6'0 190 4.45, 3rd yr starting
Works great, worst starter on team, best value at first pick

70: R3 P6 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 3rd yr starting
Some other options are rising into the 75-125 range, but since we have no picks for a stretch of 75 slots...

145: R5 P3 ILB DeMarvion Overshown - Texas
6'3 225 4.55, 2nd yr starting
Major physical specimen, but needs work

148: R5 P6 S Jalen Pitre - Baylor
6'0 200 4.45, 2nd yr starting 1st tm AllBig12
According to mocks, I always take him 'early', but he may go long before this, come April.

185: R6 P6 G/T Cade Mays - Tennessee
6'5 325 5.3, 4yr starter 5star recruit
I'm not paying big money to Daniels and really big money to Whitehair for decent and decent performance. Somebody's gotta go, soon, if not now.

Finally broke down and did one this morning. With so few players under contract these are kind of hard to do as so much, including the coaching staff, will change.

PFN; traded 40 for 55, 126, and 155.

71. Jarrett Patterson OC Notre Dame

126. Martin Emerson CB Mississippi State trade icon

144. John Ridgeway DT Arkansas

I've been holding off on the sims because I don't have any idea what defense they are going to run next year. If it's back to a 4-3, they are going to need some LBs. If they stay at 3-4, they are going to need DL. They will need at least one safety and corner regardless.

They will need a center and a load of WRs too.

Good calls on Patterson and Ridgeway, Mori.

Just ran one on PFN that I like pretty well.

37. Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn St. I've liked the guy for a while now, and since he's only commanded more attention as the season's gone on, I figured I'd get him here. Nice complement to Jackson, nice guy to have when we can unburden ourselves of that little goalhanger.

69. Traded for 71 (Haskell Garrett) and 159.

71. Darian Kinnard, G, Kentucky. James Daniels is our new center. He should've been our old center, too. I'm pretty sure that neither Nagy nor Trubisky ruined each other--they're just both bad at their jobs. But Trubisky without a doubt wrecked Daniels' tenure at his traditional position. The guy was still what, 21, 22, when all of that miscommunication happened and he was moved back to guard. It's tough to communicate with a stupid person, and, well, to be as nice as possible about it, Daniels wasn't the stupid person in that situation. Anyway, Kinnard is a monster. Stick him at RG, with Daniels at center, and holy shit, we have a line.

144. Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa. I'm not flabbergasted that he's here, the way I was when George Kittle kept falling a few years ago. But to be honest, there's a little I'm-gonna-get-me-one-of-them-Iowa-TEs going on here. We're still--still!--missing a true three-down TE, and we could use some athleticism in a guy who can block. Kmet isn't that guy. He's athletic the way what's-his-ass from Nowhere Libertarian College was. LaPorta isn't Kittle or Hockenson or Fant, but he's a guy who'll make our offense better on every single play. Which we still haven't had in what feels like forever.

147. John Ridgeway, DE, Arkansas. I'm kinda done with Eddie Goldman, but I still see Ridgeway as an understudy/successor to Hicks. Just a play-wrecker. Exactly the kind of guy I want in front of Roquan Smith on running plays, while still having enough pop to collapse the pocket.

149. Tariq Woolen, CB, UT-San Antonio. Not getting a super-polished lockdown corner here, so why not a guy with unspeakable size and athleticism?

184. Jequez Ezzard, WR, Sam Houston St. I love this guy's game. Not tall, but undefendably shifty with great hands and ball skills. The ball just stops when he touches it on difficult or contested throws, the way it does with DeAndre Hopkins. Good route-runner. Doesn't have great speed, but he typically doesn't need it and--get this--he's diagnosed his lack of long speed in clinical detail and has a plan to remedy it. One of my favorite WRs in recent memory, if mostly because he's being overlooked for now. My only concern is that Justin Fields isn't the QB to take advantage of his ability to get wildly open in the blink of an eye. If he can find a way to sustain his speed after accelerating, he's Tyreek Hill with much better hands and no rap sheet. Seriously. I'm a brat for noticing that he kept slipping here; he was worth the pick at 71.

Alright. Doing my first mock! Adding some mock write ups from PFN database here after my own thoughts.

39. David Bell, WR Purdue
Just a beautiful alignment of value and need. The WR FA market has taken some hits with big injuries the past few weeks, so its going to be add to certainty in the FA class, putting a lot of hope onto Mooney. If they can add a high-potential WR prospect in Rd 2, that would be great.

When evaluating wide receivers, one important thing is physicality, and Bell is as physical as they come. He puts this to good use in contested-catch situations, where he routinely comes down with the ball. There were several examples of him snatching the ball away from the defensive back. Additionally, his physicality helps him gain additional yardage, as he is rarely taken down on the first contact.

73. Chad Muma, LB Wyoming
LB is another spot the Bears will struggle to fill with Danny T a likely cut candidate and then not much else after Roquan. Learning about Muma and he sounds like a great fit next to Smith. 6'3" 242 and physical. Has some coverage skills (HS DB), but probably needs some work. But he can be a physical run stopping presence and free up Roquan to be a big play roaming LB.

The Wyoming linebacker has excellent ability to diagnose against the run. He reads the play well and is rarely wrong-footed. Furthermore, he can fill gaps to prevent big running plays. Muma also has decent sideline-to-sideline range, enabling him to chase down ball carriers. As a tackler, Muma is a heavy hitter. You don’t want to meet him in the alley. But, more than this, he is efficient. In the games studied, he allowed very few broken tackles.

147. Cade Mays, OG Tennessee
In reading up on him, I love that he is versatile (played 4/5 spots, but mostly RG). While it was great for the Bears to add two promising lineman in last years draft and they may re-sign Daniels (UFA, 24) and have Mustipher (ERFA, 26) and Bars (RFA, 27) as young depth pieces, I'd love to add another young prospect to the mix. Value seemed to line up great here in the early 4th. That he could likely immediately contribute as a swing guy if he doesn't start is great at this stage in the draft.

At 6’6″ and 325 pounds, he has the requisite size to play guard or tackle in the NFL. He also plays the game with nastiness, looking to put his man on the ground at any opportunity.

Furthermore, he’s demonstrated strength in multiple ways. Mays is more than capable of taking a man out of the play with one powerful punch. The Tennessee guard also showcases impressive grip strength when he gets his hands on his man. Once he’s engaged, it’s rare to see his opponent break free from his vice-like grip. Mays also uses his lower body strength to anchor well when he gets set in pass protection....There is also an element of scheme versatility that will make Mays a valuable draft prospect. He spent time in a power-run offense at Georgia before transferring to a more zone-based scheme at Tennessee. With scheme fit a crucial part of the evaluation, Mays will increase his options at the next level.

149. Jalyn Armour-Davis, CB Alabama
Big 6'1" CB. Are we noticing a physicality them yet? Doesn't sound like a day 1 contributor, and maybe rides the pine most of his rookie year. I don't believe he's declared either and he may well opt to return and re-enter the draft next year. Reading the profile, a switch to safety doesn't sound out of the question either. Maybe he can play some jumbo dime/nickel off the bat, with Jackson bumping down to the slot.

The 6'1″, 192-pound cornerback often plays second fiddle to Josh Jobe in mock drafts, but I think Armour-Davis is actually the better prospect. Both are long coverage defenders, but Armour-Davis is more twitchy, fluid, and natural with his footwork. He's also less reckless from a physicality standpoint. If there is a knock on Armour-Davis, it's that he's not elite at producing on the ball. He has 2 interceptions and 2 pass deflections this year, with one of those picks coming last week against Tennessee. While it looks nice on the stat sheet, it was truly caused by a miscommunication between the QB and the WR. Armour-Davis can be more consistently proactive when in position. But already, he has the fluidity, short-range burst, and instincts to put himself in position more often than not.

188. Brian Robinson Jr., RB Alabama
Not gonna abandon physicality at this point! At 6'1" 225, he adds a nice size element to the RB group and hopefully helps make Montgomery expandable with a projected 2023 RB duo of Herbert/Robinson.

Listed at 6’1″, 225 pounds, Robinson has a dense, relatively high-cut frame. With this dense frame, Robinson shines as a physical back. He’s an aggressive finisher who uses his size to his advantage. He can lower his shoulder and grind out extra yards in short-yardage situations, and he can drag defenders with his steady leg drive through contact.

Robinson’s footwork is exceptionally coordinated and perhaps the primary meshing agent for his game. The Alabama RB churns his feet as he approaches holes and can utilize shuffles, stutter steps, and gallops to adjust his angle and set up runs. He can also kick his feet up to avoid arm tackles in the backfield and has a natural feel for staying upright.

My favorite one lately. PFN, lots of trades.

51. Sean Rhyan, G, UCLA. Daniels to center, and look out.

73. Romeo Doubs, WR, Nevada. Not ideal--that might've been Drake London falling--but a Scottie Pippenish big guy who remembers being a small guy. I like him a lot opposite Mooney.

90. Jalen Pitre, S, Baylor. Like Tyran Matthieu but perpetually ten times angrier. Also has nickel skills. I know that he's undersized, but I think he's undersized like Matthieu and Budda Baker.

111. John Ridgeway, DE, Arkansas. I think we need DE depth more desperately than most of us want to admit. Ridgeway isn't Hicks, but then again we can't ask for that. He's a consistent problem for offenses, though, and we have guys around and behind him who can make use of that.

124. Tariq Castro-Fields, CB, Penn St. Maybe too aggressive, but I'd rather have to tame those tendencies than instill them. Fantastic length and quickness/mirroring ability that shouldn't accompany it.

191. Jequez Ezzard, WR, Sam Houston St. Still my favorite WR in the draft. Not the best, but my favorite.

222. Mike Rose, ILB, Iowa St. We're supposed to be getting toward more realistic rankings these days, and how Rose falls this far I can't say. But so did George Kittle and a lot of guys. Anyway, a big LB who plays bigger or smaller than he is, exactly when it counts. Fun running buddy for Roquan.

255. Matt Waletzko, OT, North Dakota. I'm not sure that you have to pick a QB literally every year, but I am sure that you pick a QB or an OT. Waletzko's at least as good as anyone else here.

Priority URFA: Zander Horvath, FB, Purdue. I don't know if he can block at an NFL level, but he's got the size and seems to have the mentality. If he can, he's the FB that we'll need to run the shit out of the ball next year. Which we'll need to do.

Ah, I see a lot of my favorites surfacing elsewhere.

I went https://www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft/ this time, for something new, even though I think mockdatabase is still the best.

Went no trade - not really deliberately, but I'm not passing on McCreary in 2 and they have Patterson high enough that you have to take him by 73 to get him (which is still a guaranteed part of all my drafts, until I feel better about some of the others on the list).

Lots of holes remain, of course - you can't even hit them all in a trade down draft, much less a no trade. But still, hit secondary, LB, DL, OL. So WR is the only group that got nothing.

2-39 Roger McCreary CB Auburn
6'0 190 4.45, 3rd yr starting

3-73 Jarrett Patterson C Notre Dame
6'5 305 5.1, 3rd yr starting

5-147 Leo Chenal ILB Wisconsin
6'1 260 4.65, 2nd yr starting

5-149 Eyioma Uwazurike DL Iowa State
6'5 320 5.0, 3.5 yrs starting
Now that Pitre and Ridgeway are getting discovered and much harder to snag, I think this is my new obscure crush

6-188 Micah McFadden ILB Indiana
6'1 230 4.65, 3rd yr starting, 1st tm AllBig10 3rd tm AllAmer

2-39) Andrew Booth Jr, CB, Clemson (Booth has rumblings of going in the first round, right now, I'm ecstatic that he's here in the 2nd)
3-73) Charlie Kolar, TE, Iowa State (Graham should be gone, and Kmet has some flaws. Kolar might go higher, but I like him here a lot)
5-146) Drake London, WR, USC (surprised he fell, but that Ankle might push him down to us)
5-148) Jordan Battle, S, Alabama (was going to take him at 146, but wanted London. Battle is a tad slow, but I like his ability to be in the right place)
6-188) Emil Ekitor Jr, OG, Alabama (started at RG but athletic enough to play either G or RT in a pinch)

New simulator to look at!
PFF just extended to 6 rounds. Why not all 7 yet, I don't know. The tail end of the rankings still need work. You can get through the fifth rounders alright, though.
