I guess my big concern now is that George McCaskey is running the ship for the moment, alone. And he needs to pace this process very quickly to seize on the short list of top notch people that can fill these roles. George historically moves like a sloth, he's very deliberate. IMO, he must have known for a few weeks this was going to be his move and should be fully prepared for a short list of candidates to get this going.
What I fear and don't want to see is a lengthy GM search that puts off the HC search until it's filled. And then by time we have our GM in place all the good coaches have been hired elsewhere and we're left scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I disagree wholeheartedly.
What matters is making the best choice, not the fastest one.

Let the celebrations begin. Until they fuck this up too.
This guy knows how to Bear fan.
Whether by luck, or good Fortune, can the Chicago Bears make the right decisions this offseason to hire a great GM who dominates the draft and who hires a Head Coach that coaches Justin Fields to 10+ years of greatness and averages 10 wins a season for the next decade?
That's all I want!
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Caleb, and Hell followed with him.

While I generally agree - time has to play a factor in making the hire. There are going to be at least a few prospective GM/Coaches that aren't going to want to wait around and see if they're a candidate for the Bears job if they have an actual offer from another club. SO hopefully George has been doing his due diligence and with consultation from Polian/Dungy he has put together a list for interviews and will get started expeditiously.
Holy Shit - We got Justin Fields!
In my former life I was known as FencikFanatic.
Oh, and if you were wondering - yes I'm real. And I'm fantastic.

I didn't want to start a whole new thread, and I wasn't sure where to put this... but yeah. The coaches had to go.
I've been trying to type a response to this for a few minutes now and I can't formulate a thought. I'm stumped by this. They're fired, so that's good. All I got.

I get Peters is a HOF player... but WTF were these guys doing.
It also speaks to Peters ability that we didn't really notice. At 39. It's both impressive and infuriating.
Everyone will be shocked to discover I'm pretty happy with this!
Man, if we get someone in who goes for a soft rebuild I'll be over the moon. A 2nd and a 3rd for Mack and Quinn, more if we can get. Shore up the offensive line and roll the dice on a few value players in 2022 before going after Fields final three rookie contract years, that could turn around my doom pretty quickly...
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

Yeah this isn’t the dumpster fire that Emery left us with.
We need to build a coaching staff around Fields and sign 2 high quality OL.
That’s it. We will get a bump in our record from not having McNagy and from having a DC that wasn’t promoted like five levels up the org chart simultaneously.
I hope George is listening more to some of the younger guys like Trace. I respect what Polian has accomplished and all, but the dude thought Lamar Jackson was a wideout. Taking advice from the ancient ones isn't working. Time to try something new.... even if it's just George making the call on his own.
- adapt the scheme to the talent, not the other way around
- short yardage situations are usually resolved by the running game
- the offensive line is important
- horizontal plays < vertical plays
- plays coming out of timeouts should be, ya know, good plays
- if you routinely have illegal formation penalties, maybe your Xs & Os are garbage
- let the OC/DC/ST coordinators run the offense, defense, & special teams, for the most part; you hired them to do that
- "being you" is not a mantra or effective football philosophy
- WR screens & jet sweeps are only as effective as the timing/blocking ability of your players; feel free to scrap them for the most part
- win games, be an asshole
Word is that McCaskey will be speaking alone at 1pm today. That's very telling. My guess is that Phillips is being moved over to the business side, and the Bears will be hiring a VP of Football Operations first, then a GM, and then a coach. All of that could go quickly, or it may be until late Feb. Who knows. But George meeting the media by himself on Black Monday has never happened that I am aware of.

They did get advice from someone younger this time. Polian is 79. Last time they consulted Accorsi. He is 80. Virginia is telling George to talk to all these young guns of the football world.

I think I read somewhere that the plan is for the GM to answer directly to ownership. I swear that was on one of the tweets today.

I mean, this is Football 101, right? That's what infuriated us so much about Nagy. "Now we're into 200 level of the offense with Mitch." WTF?! He couldn't even get the 100 level right.

As harsh as it may be after he just set a record...but Quinn's trade value might never be higher.
and still leave an OLB room of Mack, Gipson, Attaoucho, and Snowden. As I said earlier in one of the threads, Mack and Quinn are both signed for 3 more years at very reasonable rates for the new team. I would think you could get at least a first for either.
If they could get a first for Quinn and Mack, I'd trade them both. I just don't know if they could get that for them.

Totally agreed here. My hope is that next year, we can get to .500 or 9-8 … but with a smart plan for the future. This is not an unrealistic expectation.
I just want us to move to being known as a “well-run franchise.” That’s all about picking the right kind of leadership.
“Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego falls with it.”
Quinn is owed like $11.33M for 3 years and Mack is only at $15M for 3 years. That is very cheap in the pash rushing world, they should be able to get a 1st for either.

I can't imagine Mack would get traded, but I think he could get a first. Maybe 2 seconds. Quinn...his value is hard to gauge, but I'd say an early 3rd or late 2nd would be fair.
I'd trade Quinn straight up for Calvin Ridley (assuming Ridley wants to come back to football).

We've got to be able to move on from Mack, Quinn etc. first. If we can't get picks for them we're looking at a pretty bare cupboard there. I'd love to see the new GM get creative with trading them, maybe even renegotiating their deals to make us eat a bit more cap if it can net us significantly higher picks. Quinn at $12m per year might be really attractive for a team on the cusp but Mack might need sweetening a little to get a really high pick. Given where we are I'd take a few million to make it happen.
Also I've been quite happy with Desai. The defence has looked ok and I don't think he's the problem when we're forced to start guys that aren't close to cutting it and can be easily targeted. I hope he gets another chance in better circumstances soon.

I saw that too. Not sure I'm a big fan of that. Maybe that's temporary until Phillips retires next year.

Pace bent us over the fence with the cap.
I posted elsewhere here recently that it’s something like 30% of our cap next year for Mack, Quinn and EJax.
That’s a totally messed up set of priorities in an offense driven league.
I would trade Mack or Quinn for a high end OL. And if I could trade them both for 2 high end OL I would do it.
Get me the best OL in football. Grind the GD opposing defense down and everything gets better. Monty would feast behind an elite OL. Sign a reliable #2 RB. Then Fields’ development would take off too.
Desai has to go. I don’t want a guy like that. I want a name.
