The cap is kind of a joke IMO. Really don't may much attention to it and people seem to be able to get around it.

Cap space does matter to some degree or NO wouldn't be bloodletting and Payton wouldn't be fleeing.

However, I would absolutely agree that it is too flexible, too easy to abuse, and rules for it ought to be tightened up.

As with most things, though, the NFL isn't really concerned with what's really 'right' or good for the sport or fairness. They care about appearances of propriety, and if fans or players aren't outright rioting, please just leave us alone to count our money, thank you.

I don’t see what’s unfair about it, every team has the same ability to circumvent the cap - they all have the same rules. And these teams are so valuable, the max spend, even using every trick in the book, is easily attainable for every owner. The only way big money matters is with front office, facilities, stadium, etc. But as for how much any team can spend on players, its 100% a level playing field for all teams. So it’s never bothered me.

And yea the cap absolutely matters. A lot IMO. If it didn’t we’d have kept Fuller, Hicks resigning and Daniels extended would be a no brainer, tag ARob again, etc. We can’t do all those things because there’s a cap that has to be considered always.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Packers restructure contracts to put them in a worse cap situation down the road. Also they're going to be parting ways with some of their FAs and will be restricted signing FAs (although they've never been big on this). They still have a slight 'win now' window if they can keep Rodgers and re-sign Adams. They'll worry about the future later.
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

The bill comes due eventually. When Rogers goes away there will be a 1 year bloodletting.

Its tougher to tighten up since most of the contracts aren't guaranteed (not fully at least) - And the bill comes due eventually (OR maybe not with the TV contracts that are coming) - The bill can come due if it winds up like the NHL and its a flat cap

To your point though - I think a reasonable half fix would be eliminating void years (it wont do all that much in practice ) but it is the lowest hanging fruit

The league will do whatever it takes to allow the Packers to “cook the books”

After the Rodgers deal the Packers are only about $45M over the salary cap.

Break out the chainsaws cause the cuts are coming!

I will believe when I see. I see more Pace kind of shit going down - adding void years to guys, changing some to signing bonus.........

They will come up with something because in the NFL, you can F*CK with the cap.

They haven’t cut anyone with just a few days to go. Waiting for the league to grant them a temporary stay of some sort to allow them to make a SB run with Rodgers. Just kidding, kind of.

Turner might not be a bad short term bridge OT. He knows Gesty's system, but he's incredibly average.

Davante Adams saying he won't play on the franchise tag and it's his turn to get paid. Said he feels betrayed by Rodgers. He should, they are paying everyone but him. Players really hate that franchise tag. I dunno, maybe we'll see a tag/trade coming with him.

Peckers keep spending. Just resigned Devondre Campbell to 5yr 50M deal. He made 2M ish last year, so this isn’t a cap savings it’s a cap increase. How???

Heavy backloading with relatively high guarantees, I'd imagine.
It's a reasonable strategy, if you're a contender and your time is ticking.

$10m p.a. for a 28 year-old, 6 season veteran, who was a 1st Team All Pro last year playing MLB doesn't seem much. Does Campbell's contract set a benchmark for Roquan Smith?

Rodgers contract pays him $150M, pretty much guaranteed for the next three years. The Packers will be spending upwards of 20-25% of their space for a QB through 2024. Adams is already pissed off at Rodgers, and the Packers are having to cut quality players to get under the cap. Rodgers is fucking this team, and I love it.

Part of me thinks that Rodgers knows the window is closing fast, so now it's less about winning and more about that last push for generational wealth.

He just has that "Whatever man, I'm going to get paid and go out and do my thing. If we win cool, whatever happens happens" vibe. And the Packers gave in to it.

Yea good call, I’d actually weirdly respect him for that.

So, all those GB cuts are gonna come soon right? So far it’s been just 1 Smith and a low level OL. They’ve added more than subtracted.
