He got less than the $90M the Bears offered pre-franchise tag.

He agent played this horribly and cost him a bunch of money. Pace actually played the situation perfectly.

Good.
Unfortunately, that will cancel with Hicks.

No question it went badly. And Pace did well to hold firm (sort of, eventually - I think their initial offer was still a bad idea, IIRC).
I'd go easy on his agent, though. After he remained productive through years of bad offense, bad HC/OC, and bad QB, who saw that massive drop in 2021 productivity coming?
There's always a risk in not taking bird in hand, of course. But that was pretty surprising.

Yup, also inflation brings down that number more and I'm pretty CA taxes are going to take a good bite out of it as well.

I'm curious if this was the best offer he got or if he was willing to go with a lower bidder who gave him a better shot at a ring.

Well, I'll always appreciate him, despite how this last year went down.

Where does he rank among all time Bears WRs. It's (somewhat sadly) gotta be top 3 right?

If we're looking at WR's, he's #7. If we're looking at all players, he's actually #11, which somehow is even more sad. Alshon was the last great receiver we've had.
  1. Johnny Morris - '58-'67 - 5,059
  2. Harlon Hill - '54-'51 - 4,616
  3. Alson Jeffery - '12-'16 - 4,549
  4. Walter Payton - '75-'87 - 4,538
  5. Mike Ditka - '61-'66 - 4,503
  6. Curtis Conway - '93-'99 - 4,498
  7. Matt Forte - '08-'15 - 4,116
  8. Marty Booker - '99-'08 - 3,895
  9. Willie Gault - '83-'87 - 3,650
  10. Ken Kavanaugh - '40-'50 - 3,626
  11. Allen Robinson - '18-'21 - 3,561
I just checked and Johnny Morris is still around at the young age of 86. He still younger than the oldest living Bears player (and oldest living Heisman Trophy winner), Johnny Lujack, who's still kicking at 97. It would be great to hear some of the stories I'm sure he has.

Sure in pure yards, but he's the shortest tenured on that list. As far as peak performance goes, he's much higher.

I wonder if this means that Robert Woods won't be healthy for awhile. Yeah they brought in OBJ to the group previously, but I don't think that means they'll always try to get 3 top tier WR's.

I know the common take is that Mooney is not #1 material but his production has just been going up and on a per-game average, his numbers aren't that far off Robinson's. He can knock Robinson off the #11 spot if he's able to get back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in '22 and '23.

I have a hunch he's at a point in his career where he'd like an opportunity for playoff success. He probably saw that was not happening with the Bears last season.

Will he be an effective #2 WR behind Kupp? It seemed like he was #2 behind Mooney last season. It will be interesting to see how Stafford distributes the rock between Kupp, ARob and Woods. OBJ is not listed on the Rams depth chart and after getting ARob they may not pursue him.
San Francisco has always been my favorite booing city. I don't mean the people boo louder or longer, but there is a very special intimacy. Music, that's what it is to me. One time in Kezar Stadium they gave me a standing boo.

The Rams can't resign everyone, but in the nfl.com report about ARob Pelissero reported "a Beckham-Rams pairing remains in play despite the Robinson signing". We'll see how that plays out.

I think the only true #1 Alpha WR the Bears have had in my lifetime was Brandon Marshall. I think all the rest were #2 or complementary guys.

Agreed.

The rest of them were milquetoast guys or #2 types. Even way back when with Curtis Conway he was a dud personality wise IIRC.

Although I was too little to remember Willie Gault.

That's a problem with this franchise. This team desperately needs some Prime Time with the gold chains and fur coats. But you'd have to have elite players for that first.

Oh God dammit, get me somebody like Ocho Cinco who I believe took TD dance requests via Twitter.

Willie was a deep threat but not really a #1 guy IMO. My favorite (and the most productive, IMO) receiver on the superbowl Bears was Dennis McKinnon. I always really like that "work hard, highly reliable #2 guy". It is what ARob would have been if he had more "go get it" and ball security, and could block. If anyone questions what I mean by "go get it" just watch Horsted.

I do see parallels with this year's WRs and some groups of the past. I see Mooney as being Gault or Curtis Conway type. Very similar. And I see Byron Pringle as being very similar to McKinnon or Jeff Graham. As a matter of fact, Graham had a very similar rise at Pittsburgh and then exploded on the Bears for two seasons before he moved on... doubled his stats. He moved on to the Jets and of course on the Jets nobody does well. But when Graham went to SD he had several good seasons like he did with the Bears. And he started very modestly on the Steelers just like Pringle on the Chiefs.

That's my analogy for Pringle. I think he's the next Jeff Graham for the Bears.

That is NOT to say I don't want more WR firepower. I think they still need to build with youth and pick one in the 2nd. I'm starting to think maybe that alpha #1 WR might be one of those big fast guys in the 2nd round. Hoping, anyway.

One thing I liked about the Trestman Era was that Cutty was surrounded by tall guys. My namesake Brandon Marshall, Jeffrey and then psycho Bennett. That height advantage really helped out. I'd love to see that here.

Hopefully in my lifetime I'll see the Bears draft a WR who goes on to break all our franchise records and spends his entire career with the team. Our own Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, etc.

I won’t be furious, he was a good WR for us until last season.
He didn’t want to play for us on the tag. We burnt our bridges with ARob by not giving him a deal. Last season he was going through the motions and he’s not an ‘Eberflus player’ in my opinion.

The idea that he suddenly lost the ability to play was utterly ridiculous.

Wasn't being targeted, yes.
Lost the will to play for a trainwreck offense, yes.

Yep. He needs to be a complement, not a main piece. Most WRs are like that--even the really good ones can make a competent offense good, and a good offense pretty terrific. It takes something rare, something beyond the remit, for a WR to make a mediocre offense good or a bad one capable. DeAndre Hopkins has it. Larry Fitzgerald. Maybe another player or two I'm forgetting, but not many fit the bill. No shame in that (Hopkins is a first-ballot HoFer, after all, and Fitz might be, too), even if Robinson handled himself so poorly last year that there wasn't any point in considering bringing him back.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Arob being "open" v. a tOSU WR being open - it's a difference folks

I don't think ARob lost any ability to play. My take is he never had an excess of it to begin with, and his seasons with higher production were mostly a function of volume. And he earned that volume by having that breakout year in Jax (good for him). But there really isn't anything special about him, and it is sad that the Bears had him penciled in as their #1 WR over the past several years and didn't attempt to bring in any real competition for him. He isn't fast. He's big but not uncommonly. He had great hands at times, and other times makes mystifying drops. Again - statistically he is not special. On top of that he has aire of selfishness that I don't like.

His performance on Rams will most be a direct function of his volume, and his stat averages will align with his median.

I'd much rather pay another guy who has produced more with less, and give him the opportunity to show what he can do with Arob's volume. Mooney showed last year he could pretty much match it. I think Pringle could do even better. We'll see won't we.
