Oh, yes, I di' id

NFL mockdraftdatabase

Kinda quick and lazy.

1-7 DE Myles Murphy, Clemson 6’4 275 4.75
Mostly started as a FR, 8 sacks as SO, ACC 2nd tm
I figure Quinn will be gone, sooner or later.

2-39 C Ricky Stromberg, Arkansas 6’3 310 5.15
4 yr starter, surprised by returning for 2022
Patrick can kick over and Kramer can backup.

3-71 HB Zach Charbonnet, UCLA 6’1 220 4.45
Exploded with 1100 yds and 24 catches after leaving UM’s bench. PAC12 2nd tm
Montgomery can cash in (if it even happens) elsewhere

4-103 LB Ventrell Miller, Florida 6’0 225 4.75
Injured last yr, 3rd yr starting
5-135 LB Bumper Pool, Arkansas 6’1 230 4.75
Averaging over 100 tackles/yr for last 3yrs. Coolest name in sports, as awarded by me. SEC 2nd tm
Maybe 2 was excessive, but I’m really underwhelmed by LBs 2-6 on our chart.

7-199 3T Dante Stills, West Virginia 6’2 280 4.95
2yr starter at DE. Big12 1st tm

I feel the same way as in 2023 – these picks (5 in top 150) aren’t anywhere remotely close to enough to patch everything up.
Yeah, we’re going to have money to spend in 2023…but most teams will, so it won’t go as far. And there won’t be any “extra” FAs available.

I know you do not like it...but at some point the Bears need to draft a WR fairly early.

Yeah, in a more hardcore effort, I would probably put one there.

But I just hate trying to scout WR. Especially early on. And more so with no firm workout numbers.
I can't bring myself to go to the hassle this early.

Although, at the same time, none of the top 4 are what I would consider "luxury picks". They're all pretty necessary, if the next year pans out the way I anticipate (Quinn traded, Montgomery & Morrow inadequate as long-term pieces on a contender).

Oh, why not? The real value here to me is that it lets me totally blue-sky this year's draft.

1.7: Kayshon Boutte, WR, LSU
2.39: Will McDonald, DE, Iowa St.
3.71: Zacch Pickens, 3T, South Carolina
4.103: Edefuan Ulofoshio, LB, Washington
5.135: Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
6.177: Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida
7.199: Keeanu Benton, DT, Wisconsin

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft/

traded down twice with the 40 for 114+146

1-8) OT Connor Galvin Baylor
6'6 310 5.05 Big12 OLOY
Assuming one of Jenkins/Borom don't look like starting T material

2-53) C Jarrett Patterson Notre Dame
6'5 310 5.1 4yrs starting
Patrick & Dozier aren't long-term solutions

3-72) WR Dontay Demus Maryland
6'3 215 4.5, knee injury derailed what was on pace to be a huge season
Who knows which type of receiver Bears should be in the market for, but FL seems least settled

4-108) LB Payton Wilson NC State
6'3 235 4.65 3rd yr starting, also returning bc of 2021 knee injury
Faith in Morrow is low

4-114) DE Andre Carter II Army
6'6 250 4.75, monster 14.5 sack total in first year starting
Yeah, it's been over 20 yrs already since Andre Carter v1

5-140) TE Zack Kuntz Old Dominion/Penn State
6'7 245 4.75, also huge first season starting, after leaving PSU
After Kmet, we got nuthin

5-146) CB Jaylon Jones Texas A&M
6'1 205 4.5, 3rd yr starting incl as true Fr, 5star prospect
It bugs me that we don't have a single CB (likely to stick) who is even a full 6ft (2 M and 3 short)

7-204) LB Amari Gainer Florida State
6'3 235 4.6, 2ish years starting
More help for Roquan and his ST sidekicks

Just did one - this sim only goes to R3 though. Had a couple trade downs from 8 in R1.

One of the ways I judge the success of a season is how early I start looking at mock drafts and scouting reports. 2018 was an unusual year, I didn't pay attention at all as the Bears achieved that great record (and didn't have a 1st anyways). In '21, I started looking about 5 minutes after kickoff of the 1st game. So hopefully it will take at least a quarter of the '22 season before I throw in the towel.

Interesting how one sim has the Bears at #7-#8, and the other has them at #13. All that without a down being played.

Hmmm.

Maybe the ESPN (and other) articles about the Bears vying for the #1 pick are...a bit off?

I've seen all the way from Bears and Jets vying for #1 and #2 to as low as #8, haven't seen them lower than that. As you say, though, not only has a single down been played but not even a training camp. Now's the time to get those bets in: JF +1500 to win MVP. Bears - have to put up $550 to win $100 the Bears won't make the playoffs and pretty much the opposite for them to make it.

I'm not usually a betting guy...but it is pretty tempting to put some money on the Bears right now, and I might. ;) Best to do it before the pre-season games start, too, as I imagine the odds will change rather quickly.

Fanspeak (Buffalo Fambase)
no trades unless you pay upgrade (which I have before - not a bad deal because you can also customize your draft board and 'fix' any rankings you think are stupid and spoiling realism)

4: R1 P4 WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba - Ohio State
Stud WR gives the Bears a strong top 3-4

36: R2 P4 RB Zach Charbonnet - UCLA
Big, fast, productive, good competition. Enough with 3.8 ypc.

68: R3 P4 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
Finally, a long-term fix for the middle

107: R4 P4 OT Connor Galvin - Baylor
Feels borderline cheaty to take him here.

140: R5 P4 CB Myles Jones - Texas A&M
Some height for CB

220: R7 P4 LB Mikel Jones - Syracuse
LB didn't work out that great. Would have gone this way in R4 if Galvin was taken.

Only because there were such silly names available throughout, and because I ended up with a largely defensive draft when I'd meant to focus on offense.

PFN, no trades.

8. Will Anderson Jr., DE, Alabama
I'm sure there were some great WRs on the board. But that didn't matter.

40. Bryan Bresee, DL, Clemson
Trusting that his knee is all right. You can't not see a little Dan Hampton or a good deal of JJ Watt in this guy. So what if he's not everyone's idea of a 3-tech?

72. Trenton Simpson, LB, Clemson
Was planning to take flyers on DE and LB late, but this is ridiculous. We'd have to see if Eberflus is creative enough to use Bresee and Simpson to their full advantage.

108. Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
I'm not the least bit sold on Kmet, and until Fields corrects some fundamental flaws, a top-notch WR will be largely wasted on him. A good three-down TE (which I don't think we have at the moment), though, can help a team in just about any set of circumstances.

140. Zach Evans, RB, Ole Miss
Not a pressing need, but the value's just ridiculous here. Montgomery's given us everything he has, and deserves respect for that...but probably not another contract.

204. A.T. Perry, WR, Wake Forest
Hey, what's this? A legitimate field stretcher who also does excellent work between the hashes. I toyed with sacrilege when I mentioned Bresee, so I can't be damned much further if I say that I see a lot of Nuk in Perry's game.

Late season, PFF is a good one.

I'm boycotting them right now, though.
Besides not being very long until much later in the year, they've also got some really, really, really conspicuous overlooks in their list right now.

NFL Mock Database (thanks for the tip, Mori). Aside from the first pick, man, did the AI hate this. I kinda like it, though.

Meant to trade down in the first, and had my eye on AT Perry toward the end of the round, and then...I couldn't pull the trigger.

8: Jalen Carter, 3-Tech, Georgia
Duh. That's about all I can say here.

52: AT Perry, WR, Wake Forest
Nearly duh. If he makes it, he'll make it as a WR1. I think he will, even though he doesn't have one world-beating attribute that jumps out at you (neither did Nuk).

71: Kyu Blu Kelly, CB, Stanford
We're supposed to take Bumper Pool, right? Eh, I like Kelly a lot to round out the corps.

84: Justin Flowe, LB, Oregon
He's played what, one game because of injuries? On the other hand, he hasn't injured the same thing twice. If he puts it together, he's a Roquan Who? pick. Won't come near 84 in that case, but that's another story.

116: Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
In the words of Homer Simpson, I like my tv loud, my beer cold, and my homosexuals fuhlaaam- I mean, my TEs from Iowa. Anyhoo, LaPorta's not George Kittle, but he's a lot closer than I suspect Cole Kmet will ever be.

135: Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan
Speaking of Iowa, here's a TE-to-OT conversion who could probably play four positions for us. Not at once, though. I'm kinda counting on there only being one slot open on the line next year.

148: Adisa Isaac, Edge, Penn State
Not a big need, but you can never have too many pass rushers. All the athletic talent in the world from what I've seen.

199: Jestin Jacobs, LB, Iowa
Speaking of Iowa again, I have a feeling that he's a mid-rounder by draft time. But hey, I'll take it. We're big on short-term contracts and impending overpays at LB, so why not double down in the draft for a big value?

The Bears would have to take a serious look at Will Anderson if available but he'll probably be gone before they select. Many think Carter, at DT, should be the pick for that 3T position but if Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on the board when they pick, they have to strongly consider him. Pairing him with Mooney would be electric.

Both make sense.
I like the (currently) second tier of receivers (Johnson, Demus, Perry) better than the R2+ 3Ts, though.

The earlier I start looking at draft stuff, the more pessimistic I am. Last year it was after the 1st game, I knew a train wreck coming when I saw one. I’ll probably give about 4 games or so this year….

I've been mostly underwhelmed by the WR play in college from what I've seen so far. The preseason top guys (from LSU and Ohio State) have barely contributed so far. Brock Bowers from GA has been lights out but isn't eligible until 2024. If the Bears end up with a high pick, there may not be a guy they feel is the answer.

Jordan Addison has been decent. It's still early too...

How about a yep-I-went-there draft? Fanspeak, no subscription so no trades.

1.4 - Bryce Young, QB, Alabama. I've seen enough of Fields. And I hope he makes me look like a worrywart by the end of the season.

2.4 - Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon. I've seen enough of Smith, full stop. He's not a good fit for a team that's going to expose him to a lot of...opposing players. Weird thing to say about a guy who wants to be paid better than anyone else at his position, but here we are. Sewell is a buzzsaw who'll make tackles without attaching himself like a cape to RBs.

3.4 - Antwane Wells Jr., WR, South Carolina - Early bloomer, good route-runner, good speed. That'll do.

4.4 - Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan - Seems like the kind of tackle who'd look great in our rotation. Size, pop, size, quickness, power, and size. Just worried that our coaches will be looking too narrowly at our DL needs.

5.4 - Joe Tippmann, C, Wisconsin - I'm not going to pay a lot for this center! Feels like the right place to add a slobberknocker. Maybe not exactly the Linderbaum type you'd expect for this line, but he plays smaller than he looks when it counts.

7.4 - BJ Thompson, DE, Stephen F. Thompson - A poor man's Dominique Robinson? A skinny man's, at least, but well worth an investment in the seventh. Anyway, I expect that we'll trade Quinn this year.

Add whatever we're able to get for Fields, Quinn, and maybe Smith (could be a third-round comp, at least), and this looks like a draft that could finish the rebuild.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

...and one in case Fields turns things around.

1.4 - Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia. The DT rotation is nothing but, well, rotation guys. Here's a starter absolutely made for this defense.

2.35 - Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State. He's not Ja'Marr Chase, and FIelds isn't Joe Burrow, but here's to college reunions!

3.67 - Jestin Jacobs, LB, Iowa. Way too low, but you never know. Along with Sewell, one of my favorite upgrades to Roquan Smith (can't believe I'm saying that, but here we are).

4.106 - Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan. Could absolutely transform this defense next to Carter. A rich--like, old-money rich--man's Dalvin Tomlinson. I think this is three rounds too low, maybe three and a half, and Fanspeak says I reached for him.

5.139 - Joe Tippmann, C, Wisconsin. Almost had Steve Avila in the fourth, but that would've meant forgoing Smith, which I probably wouldn't have done. Anyway, a huge center who can play across the line. Perfect addition to a team with only one glaring hole on the line. Backup to Patrick for a year, then the starter.

6.219 - B.J. Thompson, DE, Stephen F. Austin. These last three are becoming my favorites. We'll need another DE, and Thompson's as promising as any late-rounder.

I'd be drafting a QB each year from here on out, but this strikes me as a tight, efficient draft.

Best DT rotation since Hampton and McMichael? Check.
#1 WR? Check.
Finish the offensive line? Check.
Bigger, more versatile WLB? Check.
Plus a hugely athletic developmental DE. Heck, Julius Welschof wasn't drafted, so get him in here, too.

Really hard to determine what they need when Fields is trainwrecking the entire passing game
Mostly I'm still going with the same positions and same guys

2-23 C Jarrett Patterson

7-10 LB Troy Brown
