What the heck, a post-trade-deadline dealie. Nice not to have to convince myself that any of the WRs jump out at me. Just guys I think we should add, where I think we should add them, without really looking much at the rankings.

1.7: Jalen Carter, 3T, Georgia. Because duh.

3.56: John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota. N-way coin flip goes to the H-F guy.

3.70: Mazi Smith, NT, Michigan. As low as he ought to go, so I'm taking him.

4.109: Chase Brown, RB, Illinois. Hell, keep Montgomery, too. Let the league figure it out.

4.133: Ivan Pace, LB, Cincinnati. A better fit than Roquan, I suspect.

5.142: Isaiah McGuire, DE, Missouri. Just improving the rotation for now.

5.160: Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan. Surprised he was here. We might be set by next year...but we probably won't be. Can't hurt to keep feeding the pipeline.

7.222: Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina. If Fields has established himself, this is an investment in depth, not a threat. If he hasn't, then it's a minor threat--not the first, hope it's not the last.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

Did my first one on FanSpeak using Vegas odds:

6: R1 P6 DL Jalen Carter - Georgia
56: R2 P25 EDGE Will McDonald IV - Iowa State
69: R3 P6 C Sedrick Van Pran - Georgia
108: R4 P6 WR Marvin Mims - Oklahoma
134: R4 P32 OT Ryan Hayes - Michigan
141: R5 P6 LB Nick Herbig - Wisconsin
160: R5 P25 LB Owen Pappoe - Auburn
221: R7 P6 DL Dante Stills - West Virginia

I think I'd be reasonably happy with this.

Q: What'll never happen?
A: This! But Fanspeak says it will. Their board, Vegas seeding.

1.6: Jalen Carter, 3T Georgia. Natch.

2.57: Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, Kansas State. I don't know a ton about him, but he seems to have a lot of badger in him, and his production looks projectable.

3.69: Siaki Ika, NT, Baylor. It'll never happen, sure. But it should. This guy, Carter, and Jones, and our D looks completely different. And, by definition, better.

4.108: Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama. Because he was there.

4.134: John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota. Nobody took any of the centers, which is why I kept passing on them. And finally it got ridiculous.

5.141: Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa. A perfect receiving-leaning counterpart to Kmet. If we're using TEs now, let's use all the fucking TEs!

5.161: Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan. At the very worst, a terrific developmental prospect who should be ready within a year. I do like Carter and Thomas as IOL prospects.

7.221: SirVocea Dennis, LB, Pitt. Great name, which really counts this far down the draft. Also a very good football player, which is nice, too.

That was pretty crazy

Which board - Jake or Steve?
Either way, FAMBase is the only one I've found to be usable so far. (They add more as other sites develop full boards of 300+ players)

Thanks to Mori, a more realistic one. Fanspeak, FAMBase, Steve's needs, Vegas's expectations.

At #3 (and why not, at this point?), we could be looking at a deflated market for picks after 1-2 go QB, but some really game-changing talent still on the board. I'd be inclined to sit tight. Like this (PFN):

1.3: Will Anderson Jr., Edge, Alabama. Because.

2.59: Tyler Davis, DT, Clemson. Middle-class man's Jalen Carter? Bates to his Bowdoin? Close enough is a huge advance for our line.

3.66: Traded (Layden Robinson) with 156 (Eric Gray) for 81, 117, 149

3.81: Jaelyn Duncan, OT, Maryland. A much better OT prospect than I thought I'd have to settle for.

4.101: Olusegun Oluwatimi, OC, Michigan. Liked him the best of the remaining centers.

4.117: Keeanu Benton, DT, Wisconsin. Now that's a line. Mostly. Wait a sec.

4.131: Chase Brown, RB, Illinois. Somehow adds something completely different to a talented RB corps.

5.134: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State. I know he's hurt right now. I think he'll be fine, and he'd be a nightmare across from Kmet.

5.149: Traded (Myles Brooks, who was exactly the guy I'd have drafted here) for 170 and 173.

6.170: Isaiah McGuire, Edge, Missouri. There. Now the D-line's got a pipleline.

6.173: Ronnie Bell, WR, Michigan. Always struck me as just a damned good fundamental WR.

7.198: Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina. It's time.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Picks:
32 - Broderick Jones OT Georgia

Another PFN, this time leading off with a trade-down.

1.3: Traded to Seattle (Myles Murphy) for 5, 35, 54, 120

Then the Texans, who'd taken Jalen Carter #1 overall, refused to trade up from 7 with Stroud on the board. Let's see how that works for them, but I'm not gonna be desperate here.

1.5: Will Anderson, DE, Alabama. Detroit Detroitted all over itself by taking Michael Mayer at 1.6, and then Houston got its man (Anthony Richardson, as it happens) at 1.7. So yeah, my 24-pick draft was never gonna happen.

2.35: Gervon Dexter, 3T, Florida. A power 3T who can honestly affect the run game? Perfetto.

2.56: Siaki Ika, NT, Baylor. Hey, it's my draft and I get to do what I want. Can you imagine this guy rotating with Jones and Dexter?

2.59: Traded to Tennessee (Darnell Wright, who's wrong for us) for 61 and 157

2.61: Andre Carter III, DE, Army. I didn't plan it this way. But let's pretend that I did. Draftees rarely develop the way we anticipate. Maybe Anderson is a phenomenal edge-setter in the NFL but more of an 8-10-sack-a-year guy than a pass-rushing monster. Well, now we've got a second chance, and Carter could very well be a pass-rushing specialist himself. If we leave it at Anderson, we've got some pretty good guys in that scenario, but we're still looking for a difference-maker. If we double down, we increase our chances of getting that difference-maker while getting the most out of what Anderson does well. It's not redundant: it's resonant. Anyhoo, this would be all sorts of fantastic IMSO. Yeah, there are other holes throughout the roster. But this kind of investment in the D-line opens things up for literally everyone else.

3.66: Rome Odunze, WR, Washington. He looks like an Allen Robinson clone with his helmet on, but he's a technically proficient route-runner, something of a badger on the field (note to self: no more Nuk comparisons), and by all accounts a helluva guy.

4.101: Ricky Stromberg, C, Oklahoma. Good player, could team up with Teven Jenkins for the cover of Milo Goes to Chicago.

4.120: Myles Brooks, CB, Louisiana Tech. Tall, fast, fluid...maybe not an ideal NB candidate, but, y'know, maybe he is. In any case, it's nice to keep building talent in the secondary.

4.131: Chase Brown, RB, Illinois. Love his game. Keep feeding the beast.

4.134: Traded to Detroit (Ronnie Hickman) for 144 and 175.

4.144: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon. In different ways, he and Sam LaPorta are my favorite complements to Kmet this year.

5.156: Jonathan Mingo, WR, Ole Miss. More speed, more length.

5.157: Blake Freeland, OT, BYU. Who knows what our line will look like by next year? This guy's as good a developmental prospect as any this late in the draft.

6.175: Daiyan Henley, OLB, Washington St. Absolutely perfect fit. Enough to make us forget about whoozitz.

7.198: Tyson Bagent, QB, Shepherd. An even lower, dumber release than Justin Fields when he's unnecessarily improvising. BUT. A fantastically quick release to go along with pretty good arm talent and real decisiveness. At least in DII or whatever they're calling it now. Enough to work with, at least through a rookie contract.

At this point I think we're all going to be willing Chase Brown to be a Bear in 2023, so the gods have virtually predetermined this course of action. It's his fate.

Was able to turn the number 3 pick into 5 and 21 with a trade with the Seahags and landed 2 guys I'd be willing to take at three. Tons of trade offers as the draft went on but basically stayed put with rest. Picks ended up being:

5. Jalen Carter, DT Georgia
21. Peter SKoronski, OT Northwestern
59. Jalin Hyatt, WR TN
66. Drew Sanders, LB Arkansas
101. Ricky Strombery, C Arkansas
131. Will McDonald, Edge Iowa St.
134. Dontayvion Wicks, WR Virginia
165. Chase Brown, RB Ill
198. Sataoa Laumea, OG Utah

Lots to sort out, but one thing became clear today: we should Larry Bird Luke Lachey in the fifth round. That's a thing, right?

Post-EJ draft. PFN since I'm too cheap to pay for trades on Fanspeak.

Gave this a whirl through 4 rounds just for laughs. Made a shitload of trades.

Netted two 2024 firsts, one from Detroit who wanted to move up to take Jalen Carter at 2, another from Jacksonville (via Houston) who moved up to take CJ Stroud. Gained a 2024 third from Minnesota, but don't remember how.

Here's how it played out:

R1, P12: KELEE RINGO, CB - GEORGIA

If I'm Eberflus, the primary objective of 2023 is to never, ever again have Kindle Vildor and a pile of nobodies as your defensive backfield's primary depth/rotation. Ringo is big, he's physical, and he can sniff out turnovers. Can't pass him up.

R1, P15: NOAH SEWELL, LB - OREGON

Sewell was born to play the middle of the field in a 4-3. He's a missile to the ball carrier and a bigtime opportunist to either make dynamic plays or capitalize on tipped passes or bad throws. He's the best of the bunch at 15 overall who could be an immediate difference maker and continue to energize a defense that is basically a corpse.

R2, P32: JARED VERSE, EDGE - FLORIDA STATE

Verse is arguably the second fastest edge rusher in this draft, and beyond being a real problem attacking the quarterback, he plays the run well, and has a knack for blocking field goals and generating fumbles. His weaknesses are inexperience and technique refinement, but he has a lot of gifts you can't teach. Another important piece to the defensive rebuild added.

R2, P50: JOHN MICHAEL SCHMITZ, OC - MINNESOTA

While Schmitz is more of a luxury pick than an immediate difference maker, the Bears need to remedy the poor depth on the interior line, namely at center. Schmitz is a plug-and-play mauler that can run block right away, and he's got experience in the RPO that would appeal to Fields/Getsy. He has great size, plays physically as hell, and has some athleticism to add flexibility to getting out of his stance. There were other options here that may have been sexier, but this is the kind of pick that cements a successful draft.

R3, P78: BRANDON DORLUS, DT - OREGON

The thing I really liked about Dorlus' tape is that he's not the guy at the end of the play making the pick or celebrating a fumble recovery; he's the guy at the beginning of the clip who batted the ball in the air or filled the gap to wash the ball carrier into no-man's-land. Dorlus has the trademarks of being a steady presence on the defense line who may not generate a ton of pressure on QBs, but will frustrate the running game and allow athletic linebackers and edge rushers to prey on unprepared offenses. He's a big pain in the ass, and I like that.

RD3, P101: CHRISTOPHER SMITH, S/DB - GEORGIA

Smith seems like a pocketknife-type defensive back and special teamer whose nose for the ball in the air and aptitude for reckless, hard hits make him an appealing and versatile rookie. He's a center fielder, and while undersized, he's compliment Brisker's physical run-game with some electric interception aptitude. He's not a 1:1 replacement for Eddie Jackson, should he depart, but he's at the very least an interesting wild card that sparks a roster. May not be available by this point realistically, but he was for me, so I'll snag him.

RD4, P131: ZACH HARRISON, EDGE - OHIO STATE

More help for a depleted/non-existent 2022 pass rush. Harrison's the kind of 4-3 DE I like - a powerful, rugged butcher who wears down blockers over the course of a game before imposing his go-to moves to gain a late advantage.

------

Overall I think this would be a very strong, if not unheralded draft that not only greatly supplements a defense in desperate need of pass rush and playmakers, it gives a nice chunk of future draft capital and assurance that Sam Mustipher probably won't be on the roster in 2023.

Nuk might be my favorite non-Bear in the entire league...and he'll be 31 by the start of next season. If we added him and no one threw to him, things would get ugly eight different ways, and fast. I'd lean no and hate myself for it.

Who'd ya get with 8 and 49?

PFN.

Clowney went so well for the Texans that they took Anderson at 1.1. So trade-downs. With everyone in the division, if you incldue a Minnesota pick I got from Detroit.

Trades

1.2 to Detroit (CJ Stroud) for 1.3, 1.13, 2024 Detroit 1st, 2024 Minnesota 3rd

1.3 to Green Bay (Anthony Richardson) for 1.8, 2.38, 2024 GB 1st, 2024 GB 2nd

2.38 to Pittsburgh (Justin Flowe) for 2.42, 2024 Pittsburgh 4th

3.65, 5.152 to New England (Tommy Eichenberg, Parker Washington) for 3.70, 4.117

Picks

1.8: Myles Murphy, DE, Clemson - Anderson's still my top choice. But Murphy's a helluva player, and more obviously built for a 4-3.

1.13: Jalen Carter, 3T, Georgia - Are people really souring on him like this? Their funeral.

2.42: Anton Harrison, RT, Oklahoma - I still think that we'll go FA for our offensive line, but Harrison looks like he could step right in at RT and keep developing while holding his own.

2.55: Siaki Ika, NT, Baylor - Not like I expect him to be here when the real draft rolls around, but holy cats, can you imagine him and Carter here for the next four years?

3.70: Rome Odunze, WR, Washington - Becoming my favorite sleeper at WR. Still don't know why he's a sleeper, though.

4.101: Zach Harrison, DE, Ohio St. - I worry a little that he's winning in ways that won't work in the NFL. But that's all right--he'll have time to refine his game if need be.

4.117: Olusegun Oluwatimi, C, Michigan - Is he going to get out and block safeties 15 yards downfield? No. But he's going to neutralize whoever he gets to. And he's going to be the brains of the operation. That's more than enough.

4.131: Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington St. - PNW bias, maybe, with him and Odunze, but Henley's a monster who'll remind us of someone.

5.133: Myles Brooks, CB, Louisiana Tech - I'll be honest: people say nice things about him, and he's got good size. That's what I know about Brooks. Really nice to be able to add a CB after ticking all my major boxes.

7.197: Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina - Another guy with a hurt foot, yeah, but the guy got CC into the national rankings. Worth having around IMSO.

2024 picks:

Detroit 1st
GB 1st
GB 2nd
Minnesota 3rd
Pittsburgh 4th

And that's about as perfect as a draft could go for us, IMSO. I'll just print it out and mail it to Roger Goodell, and we can look forward to TC.

A couple scenarios from Bears web sites:
Pick #2: Bears stay put and take Will Anderson
2nd Rounder from Ravens: John Michael Schmitz, C , Minnesota
3rd Round: Trade with Rams, Blake Freeland, OT, BYU. 6'8", 305lb
4th Round: Calijah Clancy, DT, Pitt; Rakim Jarrett, WR, Maryland (via trafe with Eagles)
Round 5: Charlie Jones, slot WR,Purdue; Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan (via teade with Ravens)
Round 6: Josh Newton CB, TCU (cia trade with Rams)
Round 7: Tavion Thomas, RB, Utah (kind of a Monty type runner)

If the Bears end up at #2 and explore trades, here's a couple for that pick:
Chicago gets Vegas' 2023 1st round pick @ #10; 2023 3rd round pick; 2024 1st round pick; 2024 4th round pick; 2025 1st round pick
or
Chicago gets Detroit's 2023 1st round pick@#3; 2023 3rd and 6th round picks; 2024 4th round pick
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

First one of the year. I traded from 2 to 3 so DET could take Bryce Young plus picked up their 13 and a later pick. Then traded 13 to DAL for 27, their 2nd, and a late round pick. Decided that was enough trading down and netted this on PFN!

3. Jalen Carter DT Georgia *trade

29. Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR Ohio State *trade

55. John Michael Schmitz OC Minnesota

59. Darnell Wright OT Tennessee *trade

61. Tommy Eichenberg LB Ohio State *trade

65. Blake Corum RB Michigan

93. Kyu Blu Kelly CB Stanford *trade

101. Adetomiwa Adebawore EDGE Northwestern

127. Zion Tupuola-Fetui EDGE Washington *trade

131. Mohamoud Diabate LB Utah

133. Zach Harrison EDGE Ohio State

152. Jordan McFadden OT Clemson

197. Mark Perry S TCU

222. Cade Stover TE Ohio State *trade

NYer that fell in love with Sweetness destroying defenders with that legendary stiff arm @ 8 yrs old. I'll never forget those early days and now, after many many years we have some integral players that'll be the key to success in the very near future.
